Hello Mangahelpers! Grand week for Weekly Shounen Jump as the great 3 plunge into great developments accompanied by great action. Naruto sort of stands out from all three, because it offers action, character development and a slight hint about Madara/Tobi’s plans. Let’s plunge ourselves into this review, because I think it will be worth it.

The title this is pretty interesting. It has been long sine we had a title as revealing as this one. Not obvious, revealing. This title is in close relation to Kisame’s life as it kinda sums it up regarding Kisame’s goals. The concept of living in a lie was first introduced with the ninja art known as genjutsu, but of course that cannot be compared to actually living in one big lie. But what if someone like Tobi comes along and manipulates people, to a level that he tries to implement a massive genjutsu on the world, with the possibility of even this being a lie? Well then certainly things get more serious, and Kisame’s recollection of certain events, definitely reminds us of one of the most popular ninja rules: Read beneath the underneath.
Let’s see how does this find its place in this week’s chapter.
This is one spectacular series of panels. As they entered in the final chapter of their confrontation, both fighters are bringing out their powerful tools in order to subdue each other. Kisame unfortunately commits a fatal error in this encounter. He observed Gai’s technique and commented that the chakra was pushing away the water. And as Gai formed his technique he arrived to the assumption that Gai’s technique was a chakra blast. Even though he concluded that Gai was a taijutsu master, he didn’t think of the possibility of the tiger being something else then energy.
This is where the error comes in. He decided to use a very interesting jutsu. This particular shark missile, just like the caster, has absorption abilities, and it grows bigger and powerful consuming the enemies technique. This is very interesting and entertaining, because we have so little knowledge of Kirigakure and the jutsu those people use. We know that they have brilliant swordsmen and water jutsu users, but the extent of the water jutsu was pretty vague. Nidaime Hokage was the only one who showed us great prowess with water, summoning it from nowhere and using high pressure water beams to attack the opponent. This way we know that water can be destructive, but it’s one of the rare cases. Kisame also proved that his chakra capacity allows him easily to create water, and he also used some impressive water attacks so far, which aimed at destroying and binding as well.
But this time, what he encountered, wasn’t ninjutsu, but taijutsu, which pretty much sums up the battle. There’s no elemental advantage, there’s no chakra to drain, so the battle is about sheer force, which pretty much leans in Gai’s favor, after he unlocked 7 gates. And this is indeed the way it happened.
I mentioned high pressure water, this time it’s high pressure air. Hirutora is a technique that collects air pressure into a single point, then with the help of a punch it is released towards the enemy. Hirutora was enveloping Gai at first, but Gai increased the pressure and compressed the tiger, making it lesser in size, but definitely more powerful. So it is a condensed attack of air pressure, which is indeed taijutsu, because pressure is present when there’s contact, physical contact, and Gai’s taijutsu is physical.
Kisame watched this technique carefully and though that the tiger that was getting compressed and compressed was similar to a Bijuu Blast, and that’s why he thought it was a chakra attack. Another reason for Kisame’s failure was the blue aura Gai emanated. He thought that was the source of the blast that he received or was going to receive, but it turns out that the aura is sweat saturated with the blue energy released from the gates, and which evaporates due to the heat effect. We know from boyakist’s translation, that this blue aura is not simple blue, the kanji used for it reflects a combination of the shades of blue, so it’s more appropriate to call it deep blue, or energy-like blue, which isn’t to be confused with the plain RGB meaning of blue.
This is the first reference to lies in this chapter, the first relation to the title. Lack of information, or in this case incorrect information lead to Kisame’s defeat, and to the failure of his mission. We see Gai standing with the scroll in his hand, but the Kisame isn’t finished, as he tries to move, Gai knocks him out.
These next panels are the merit of Tsunade
. Why would I say such a thing? Well because only now it becomes obvious what kind of situation did Tsunade foresee, and what reasons she had for deploying the 3 bodyguard platoon for Naruto.
Well first of all let’s say that Tsunade formed a 4 man team, for any situation that might arise on the island. A four man team as taught in the academy is the ideal formation if one wants to move undetected, fast, but have enough manpower for completing the task. That’s why Pain put a 5 corner seal to the entrance of his cave.
But Tsunade also thought of Naruto when he chose his teammates. First was obviously Yamato, who can suppress the Kyuubi, due to his Kekkei Gankai ability. He was also member of Anbu, so he’s well suited for fighting as well.
Maito Gai the leader of one if not the most powerful attack squad of Konoha is there to offer protection, due to his amazing combat capabilities, as proven in this last fight. Tsunade also thought about Akatsuki. Their goal is to catch the Jinchuuriki, so if by any chance there will be a fight, then Akatsuki would be the main culprit, and the targets will be Bee and Naruto. That’s why he deployed Aoba, who displayed restrain and stealth attack abilities, but this next scene is where his role is really important. Mind reading. Tsunade thought if any Akatsuki were to show up, then a squad led by Gai(well eventually he fought alone but nvm) would definitely beat the Akatsuki, so they would need information as well. I think this was a perfect strategy, and a pretty well balanced team and terms of combat abilities. Bravo Tsunade!
Aoba sets up the stage to break in Kisame’s mind, the latter being unconscious. Kisame and Akatsuki coming from Kirigakure might spill the beans about Akatsuki and its plans.
This is a new way to show a recollection and it’s a good way to break the habit after having witnessed a Konoha and a Kumo recollection. But it can still considered as one, and unfortunately it means that Kisame is close to his end in this manga, so let’s cherish these last moments with him.
He is shown with his blade as he sits under a tree, letting himself invited to the meal that is undergoing nearby. As said by the other shinobi, Gai was the muscle, the combat type shinobi, while the others were covert ops. The events are developing at a rapid rate, and Ibiki is shown ans he is very demanding, and Kisame is shown to be at a crossroad of his life, because it’s about lies and information.
Another interesting character is being introduced in the middle of this flashback. Kisame’s master who is shown to be the owner of Samehada. He doesn’t look like pretty much, and I guess that’s probably due to advanced age, and the fighting style that doesn’’t require much movement since long range attacks and weakening enemies with chakra drain doesn’t require much. Anyway this master is telling Kisame to defend the information with his life, because that is something vital to their village.
And Kisame does just that, but in his own way.
Pretty scary panel. I think this is were Kirigakure no Kaijin, or The Monster of the Hidden Mist is born. His chakra is filling up the air, and his demonic gaze sweeps through his enemies from Konoha. Information and trust are very important, and Kisame seemed not to trust his teammates, so he chose his own ability. This way he managed to escape, while defending the information by killing the rest of the team.
So he escaped, we know that much, but his experiences led him to believe that the world is filled with lies. He is shown standing near the corpse of his master and getting ownership of Samehada.
The developments get pretty complicated, and the reason why this title was chosen are getting revealed little by little.
Yagura the 4th Mizukage tells him that his master was leaking information to the enemy, so Kisame did well to eliminate him. He also tells Kisame that he trusts him, but the reason is the actions that he performed for his village. These actions are contradictory, and most of them are not known by the great public, they are dirty jobs, assassination and betrayal, much like our beloved Root from Konoha. The existence of these covert organizations within the villages, shows us what is Naruto’s job exactly, and how hard it will be to break this cycle of wars, hatred and lies.
This is the world in which Kisame was caught in. A world of lies, where he cannot trust anyone but himself, but even his own actions are leading to more confusion, instead of consolidating his role, his place in this world. The irony of Kisame’s life is pretty natural thing, because the times that he lived in, during the reign of the bloody Mizukage, under his liar master are clearly great influence even if he tried to escape these lies.
But the irony is just getting bigger.
A shady figure is shown next to Yagura and he reveals himself as Uchiha Madara, who is shown later as Tobi. The lies are taken to a next level with this character and Kisame recognizes this fact as well. So all that speech about his traitorous master, Yagura’s trust towards Kisame were nothing but elements of manipulation. Madara promises Kisame that he will make a place for him to belong to, where he can rid himself of all the falsehoods that has been governing his life until now. But Kisame didn’t love for nothing all these years, and what he learnt for sure, is to doubt people, but when he asks Madara to come forward, the flashback stops.
This was another great tease for everyone, because we are dying to see Madara/Tobi’s face, but Kishimoto just won’t let us. But his appearance was needed, because to fully portray a world of lies and living in such a world his someone with expertise in this field is required, and he has more than enough expertise.
But why did Kisame suddenly wake up? He was knocked out, he didn’t know what the others were doing to him, yet his reaction was fast, he quickly bit his tongue in order to not reveal any info about his teammates and boss. The human brain has different behaviors in different situations. These are commonly known as brain waves and there are many theories about them, regarding sleep, perception, meditation. What Aoba performed was a form of hypnosis as I observed, but he entered Kisame’s mind and lived the events of the hypnosis on his own skin. But this doesn’t mean that Kisame’s brain wasn’t active, brain waves are always present, even after death for a little while, and if a necessary shock is delivered then the brain waves can be altered, thus provoking shock during hypnosis, or waking up during nightmares. I perceive Kisame’s reaction like a combo of the two, but more inclined to the waking up part. Just imagine the situation when you are experiencing something terrible or shocking and you wake up instantly from it. The disturbing event was Madara revealing his face, so maybe Kishimoto did us a favor, he saved us all from heart attack

There is another possibility that Kisame forced himself out, but he was unconscious, so it's really tough to decide, but Aoba certainly implies this as well. The tongue bite is a way to get out of genjutsu, which is exactly what Aoba performed, interrogation genjutsu. Well, when we get other translation sources, maybe we can tell more precisely what happened.
But it isn’t over, because the flashback continues, it’s just that Aoba was forced out and Madara just revealed his Moon Eye Plan to Kisame.
The panel is fantastic, it shows the determination of a shinobi who lived his whole life in a lie, and he was finally able to give his life for something that secured an honest world. His loyalty towards Madara is commendable and it’s something to be showns as reference to the younger generation of warriors ans shinobi.
But is this really true? Isn't something off here? Somehow this panel is also sad, because this panel is a result of the loyalty towards a liar, a coward and a manipulator, basically everything that Kisame tried to exterminate from his life. I don’t know, but if Kisame was told the Moon Eye plan that we all know, how could he not know that a world like that is a lie in itself, it is a false order, a genjutsu, manipulation of reality. How could Kisame die for the accomplishment of such a plan? Unless Madara told him something else, which is very probable, so Kisame died for a world that wasn't even meant to b created. Basically the man that manipulated a whole village, thus his life, offered him a reason to live, though that reason is a lie in itself from every perspective, as I commented earlier.
So this death has an ironic and tragic note to it, which puts Kisame in a pathetic position, but unfortunately this is the position where people who are manipulated by Tobi arrive.
What is to be learned from Kisame’s life-story is that the world of the shinobi is a world of lies, and somehow all those lines that foreshadow the destruction of the shinobi system, are more probable of becoming true, then we know. This life-story portrays Itachi’s life, Sasuke’s life and all others, who are torn to bits in this world, perfectly, and it further enhances the merit of Bee, Gaara, Naruto who managed to overcome this world’s difficulties and their own, just to follow their own honest path.
Quick summary/Opinions
Beautiful chapter, almost all ingredients were met. First of all the character development, which kinda ended for Kisame, was fabulous, and the way Kishi tied it together with the shinobi world was indeed great. Another great character was Gai. He showed what I said many times, that on the battlefield his stupid and goofy personality ends, and he becomes serious, and focused and he doesn’t let his emotions take the best of him. In this chapter he showed great composure and control of his own powers as he let Kisame live in order to get information. Information about his taijutsu skills were welcomed as well, because it’s really a rare sight to see someone this powerful and skilled in taijutsu, so the actions of the Blue Beast are definitely a great sight to behold.
The plot development was scarce, but at least it moved forward with the end of this fight, This feels like we are heading towards to conclusion of this island arc, because the Alliance defeated another Akatsuki and Naruto jut received a new power. I don’t think Kishimoto will upgrade this new cloak to a full blown Bijuu Cloak(like in the good ol’times), or at least not for now.
The art was superb, it awesome and epic and all the other words that can be used when something is brilliantly done. As usually scenes near water have a different feeling, and it’s more spectacular, not to mention to double spreads and Gai’s awesome facial expressions.
The shades weren’t ignored either, as Yagura was shown and the way Madara introduced himself. Nice effects were used when Aoba lost control over Kisame’s head, so Kishi really did his best in this chapter.
A little humor in the form of rapping was great, it was nice to have a little comic relief, it was like the silence before the storm, the storm of irony.
All in all 9/10, great work sensei.
Predictions/Want to happen
It feels like there’s no more to development on this island, even if Kisame is showing signs of struggle, I think that was his last roar, so I think it’s time for a change of scenery. You guys take your pick, there aren’t many options though. There’s a possibility to remain on the island, but just for assessing the situation and planning what to do next. This is really a tough spot to predict from, since everything is up to Kishi and his plans for this war, for which we have no hints at all, even more that the information was retrieved from Kisame.
My money is on planning what to do next, with maybe some interference from the Alliance, but my hopes aren’t high in that regard.
Anyway I’m just glad that you guys followed what I said here, because if you’re reading this then it means that we are close to the end of the review. I don’t think Kishimoto will upgrade this new cloak to a full blown Bijuu Cloak(like in the good ol’times), or at least not for now.
The art was superb, it awesome and epic and all the other words that can be used when something is brilliantly done. As usually scenes near water have a different feeling, and it’s more spectacular, not to mention to double spreads and Gai’s awesome facial expressions.
The shades weren’t ignored either, as Yagura was shown and the way Madara introduced himself. Nice effects were used when Aoba lost control over Kisame’s head, so Kishi really did his best in this chapter.
A little humor in the form of rapping was great, it was nice to have a little comic relief, it was like the silence before the storm, the storm of irony.
All in all 9/10, great work sensei.
Predictions/Want to happen
It feels like there’s no more to development on this island, even if Kisame is showing signs of struggle, I think that was his last roar, so I think it’s time for a change of scenery. You guys take your pick, there aren’t many options though. There’s a possibility to remain on the island, but just for assessing the situation and planning what to do next. This is really a tough spot to predict from, since everything is up to Kishi and his plans for this war, for which we have no hints at all, even more that the information was retrieved from Kisame.
My money is on planning what to do next, with maybe some interference from the Alliance, but my hopes aren’t high in that regard.
Anyway I’m just glad that you guys followed what I said here, because if you’re reading this then it means that we are close to the end of the review. So thank you very much for bearing with my ideas concerning the chapter, and with this last breath we need to thank Binktopia, for their high quality work and speed.
