Small talk
For anyone who plans to start a review about any manga. Don’t start a week before midterms. This will be my bad joke for the week. Anyway let’s begin with…Naruto chapter 514 Kabuto’s plan
Chapter layout.
Simply put the purpose of this chapter was to get rid of Yamato or in other words having Yamato on Madara’s side will either balance the power between both sides or make Madara’s side slightly more powerful which from a story point of view makes things more interesting since it’s not very interesting when it looks like there’s a 90% that the good guys will win. The rest of the chapter consisted of a small taste (preview) of what’s to come in the future. In this trainees opinion a chapter who’s structured like this has work extra hard on the “how it’s done” especially when things are about to get forced.Chapter layout.
Tsuchikage vs Deidara
This is one of the small tastes of what’s to come. We can see this by the way we get to see jutsu that looks like they have potential to be very entertaining but before what we see what they actually do something happens and these jutsu never get to the center stage if you will. For example Tsuchikage was about to use some dust element jutsu that is said that can blow up the turtle Island but it becomes interrupted twice. On Deidara’s side he was holding explosive that was molded to look like him but slightly fatter. Before Deidara could clash this jutsu with Tsuchikage’s cone like jutsu he is interrupted by his coffin. Overall this preview was ok for me. This old man with a bad back now feels like he really is a TSUCHIkage since he has a powerful jutsu and its earth base (Earth plus something I suppose) like his village. My only complained would be that the only way that these two will ever get to fight in the future will be by pure luck which makes it feel less like a preview to me since they do have chemistry by the fact that they can both fly and have some unknown history that is yet to be reveal (Like what really cause Deidara to abandon his village besides the fact that he does not like Tsuchikage.
Akatsuchi's and Kurotsuchi
On Akatsuchi’s side not much is shown about him. We now know that the thing that came out of his mouth in the kage meeting was a golem. On this part the only thing that we can look forward to see from this shinobi will be what other types of golems he can create. Kurotsuchi on the other hand shows what she is capable of as she has a magma release (element) and a water release. Although I’m not sure if this is the same as Roshi’s Lava release. This could just be a difference in translation and but if they are not than perhaps the difference between the two is that magma element is more of a defensive/capturing type of jutsu while the Lava element is more of an offensive.
On a side note I don’t really understand how her congealing caustic works. I know that it’s suppose to be like cement that becomes harden but I don’t really understand why Aoba got stuck on it if it was suppose to of harden after Kabuto got hit by it.
The capture of Yamato
This part for me is where the chapter revolves around. Everything in this chapter and a little of chapter 512 were leading up to this. So to understand HOW this happens I’m going to take a step back and tell you how this came to be. For me this started when Deidara flipped the turtle island on it back in the ocean. From here Naruto ends up contributing nothing to the plot because he is fooled to continue carrying his false S class mission to survey the animals. For me this works since naruto does not have much experience to people lying to him. As a child naruto has been treated like an outcast and because of this he has become great at telling when people were hiding their sadness or happiness. We can see this with naruto’s experiences with Gaara, Sasuke, Sakura and many others. But when it comes to the other types of street smarts if you will naruto still has a lot of room to grow in that he still has the mindset of a child in that he cares about the rank of the mission more for its reputation than it’s worth.
Killer bee on the other hand for me fails to give an adequate reason for not participating in this fight. Like naruto Killer Bee also has a personality of a child but he should know that he is on a turtle and that it is in pain. It should of also have been odd to him that the turtle flipped to its back when it screamed. For me the How (did Killerbee not get involved) on this part is lacking and feels force in that Killer Bee would rather be having fun with naruto rather than checking out what is happening with his turtle friend.
From here Yamato, Aoba and Motoi end up running into Kabuto. Unfortunately we are not told how those three got there if the turtle was on its back in that ocean. My best guess would be that they left the cave and swim up to where Kabuto was but they don’t look wet. Honestly the only theory left that I can come up with is a teleportation jutsu although that seems unlikely… since it looked like they jumped to Kabuto’s location.
Moving on I liked Kabuto’s tactics. He saw Kurotsuchi congealing caustic and instantly knew that she was trying to capture him and used her jutsu to his advantage. My only complaint would be that the chapter failed to explain what stop Yamato from growing some large tree inside of his mouth… or stomach. Right now my only answer to this is that Kabuto’s mouth sent Yamato to a different dimension like Orochimaru did to Sasuke but again this is a theory at best. On a side note I would like to say that I’m amazed by the new Manda’s self control since if a small snake were to go up my nose I would at least flinch.

Final thoughts
Honestly this chapter gave me the impression that Kishimoto wanted Yamato to be used by the antagonist (Be it Madara or Kabuto) even if it means forcing things to occur in the chapter. Finding a way to do this in my opinion cause a strain or delay in the how to do this as well as soon as possible or in other words in the least amount of chapters. This could explain why there were some panels in this chapter that looked rushed or rather the part of the chapter that felt the most forced had the more rush feeling to it.
