The poll a few weeks ago was on what the Lady Werewolf and the 3rd Elder would do having come face to face with Raskeria. Most thought they would run. Which they did. Whether or not they got away clean though, remains to be seen.
Now onto the review!
This week picks up with M-21 getting his werewolf groove on. Fully manifesting as a werewolf for the first time as he fights Kentas and tries to protect Tao and Takeo. The sight intrigues Kentas who is more and more confused about what exactly he's fighting, so he decides to kill Tao and Takeo and then figure it out.
Before he can do anything though M-21 launches some furious attacks whose strength and speed that catch Kentas off guard. But when the smoke clears Kentas is bleeding a little but not seriously hurt. He tells M-21 that he's not bad but then starts fighting more seriously and completely overwhelms him. After he takes a bit of a beating his body transforms back to it's more human state and Kentas tells him that after he kills the others he'll take M-21 with him and figure out what he is.
Before he can make good on that threat, he is forced to dodge a powerful attack and when the dust settles Gejutel is standing there with soul weapon drawn. Whom Tao happily greets him as "Grampa", much to his annoyance.
Substance
This was pretty much just a combat chapter. The big focus was M-21 showcasing his full werewolf powers, which are a definite upgrade. How strong he actually is now is fairly unclear but he's certainly not as strong as Kentas, who was an even match for Rajak. So still nowhere near the top tiers of power but probably at level where he could take on the likes of Yuri and his goons.
Sadly, on the character development side I think M-21 is getting further away from being interesting. This chapter was very much the classic RK-3 formula. They get cornered, get beat up, reveal some power or clever(ish) trick, get beat up some more, and then get rescued by somebody stronger and more interesting. Which, as usual, leaves me asking myself why the series even bothered.
Not that I wasn't happy to see Gejutel. Him showing up shouldn't really surprise anybody as he is probably the most obvious choice among Clan Leaders for Raskeria as a tour guide/bodyguard in South Korea. I'm still happy to see him around though, as his bickering with Frankenstein is always entertaining.
Presentation
Artistically this chapter was solid. Attacks were well drawn and the overall detail was pretty good. The backgrounds were a little confusing as they seemed to be fighting in a completely different place than they were when the fight began but overall I thought it was good.
Pacing was typically slow fight pacing. Which I thought was particularly problematic with this chapter due to the "side story" nature of the M-21's Werewolf plot line. Spending so much time on M-21 and the RK-3 when there are so many more interesting things going on( like Raizel dying, Muzaka on the loose, and Raskeria's visit) didn't work for me. It felt out of place. Like a cut to commercial in the middle of a good movie.
Overall Rating
This chapter struck me as solid execution of what just wasn't a great idea. Their was very little in this chapter to surprise or spark interest and that gave it a low ceiling in terms of enjoyment.
I give it a 2 out of 5
