“ Chapter Reviewer” in MangaHelpers was once a status I highly regarded as an otaku. I said once because I acquired such title a few years ago but was unable to maintain it because of certain circumstances that had something to do with my reality. Yes manga and anime are fantasy that an otaku like myself, love. But even if it’s fiction, I am fervent about it so much that it has become a part of my reality. Hence, I decide to dive into its humungous world, writing and reviewing everything about manga and anime.
This is an attempt to make up for the hiatus we encountered for the past weeks. Unlike the other color spreads, I like this one as it shows the Strawhats’ fighting style. It may not be a demonstration of skills that are the coolest but at least we get to see them show off. I like how the mangaka uses a group of colors that is both contrasting and complementary. In addition to that, it is more cannon as it illustrates some of the moves they show in the chapters unlike the past color spreads that show how they unwind with a bunch of animals. But this one uses darker tones, reflecting the darker, more infamous side of the Strawhats.
One of the reasons I love One Piece is the emphasis it demonstrates on character development. It is not just the protagonists who develop throughout the course of their adventure but even the antagonists have become commendable after showing how much of a shit they are. Bellamy is a nice example of it. He shows how he develops from being a complete scumbag to becoming a classy contender who aims higher. Maybe it’s his realization of Sky Island’s reality that changes him or it’s Doflamingo’s punishment that knocks him just so he could learn that there is more to Grandline than a bunch of wild gestures and crazy battles. Coming across Luffy after their encounter in Mock Town proves his development. He is not bitter about his defeat from Luffy’s and the King’s punches. Recognizing Luffy’s haki is not just an illustration of Bellamy’s physical skill; it is a figurative announcement that he is weaker than his former opponent but is not jealous nor bitter about it. Bellamy used to be this conceited brat who projected himself as someone unbeatable but in Dressrosa he becomes a classy dude who is willing to acknowledge and even show his weakness.
