Chapter 768 - The trigger that day
Hello everyone. How was your week? After MiyamotoMusashi and Syphin, It is my turn again to be doing this week’s review. As you may have noticed we had an early release of the chapter due to a national holiday in Japan. This chapter was somewhat uneventful , it was more like a recapitulation of the fights that are currently taking place in Dressrosa. Subsequently this review will be much lighter, and I’ll be focusing more on predictions and theories. I hope you will like it , and please don’t hesitate to comment on it. I’m using the mangastream version, and all the pictures are taken from their site .Now to the review.
Solo journey of Jinbei, first son of the sea
Jinbei witnesses the ruins falling from the sky
Jinbei witnesses the ruins falling from the sky
Jinbei’s cover story is still on going. While looking for the offerings, Jinbei is startled by the sight of ruins falling from the sky. This concords with the account made by the inhabitants of the port town. What could be the reason behind such a phenomenon? I think it’s safe to assume that whoever is responsible for taking away the offerings is also behind the ruins falling down from above. Also I can’t help but be reminded of Skypiea, and how the boats were falling from the sky as well. At the moment we don’t have enough information to make accurate theories about what is happening. It sure is unsettling, and I’m still trying to figure out how this is relevant to the main story.
The devastating events portrayed in last chapter left us quite frustrated about the turn of events, even though it was predictable. Many of of us, including me to a certain extent, couldn’t bring themselves to accept the death of Corazon. The way he died at the hands of his own brother, his will, and the anguish and despair of young Law definitely took a toll on us. That said I think Oda managed to tell a really captivating story, despite being a bad ending of some sort, but more importantly he managed to make us empathize with the characters involved like never before, especially Law and Corazon who turned out to be one of the central figures of the flashback. He had so much heart and humanity despite his lineage and the fact that he had DD as a brother. It is surprising how two people like Doflamingo and Rosinante who seemingly had the same upbringing and went through the same traumatic events took two opposite paths in life. One “good” brother embraced justice and compassion, while the “bad” brother embraced madness and the cruel nature of the Tenryuubito.Alas DD’s ways make no more sense to me, since he sunk too far into madness.
Law recalls Rosinante's last words
We get to see Law reminiscing on Corazon’s last words to him. This was Oda’s way to link the past to the present, and effectively conclude the flashback. Corazon wanted Law to be free, after been chained up most of his life , in Flevance, and even after joining Doflamingo. He would be have been finally free to make his own decisions, now that he had found a way to cure himself. But it seems that Law won’t be truly free till he has dealt with the ghosts of his past, namely Doflamingo.I am conflicted about this point. While it is true that Doflamingo needs to be stopped at all costs, the fact is Law is simply driven by revenge, and I’m not sure that Corazon would have wanted Law to put his life in jeaopardy for such a reason. His last words could imply that he wanted Law to move on, that he should go past these events if he wants to be truly free. What happened to Law after the events in Minion Island isn’t known, many expressed the wish to see the continuation of Law’s story , by showing us how he managed to come by, and how he started his own crew. While I do agree that it would have been great to know all these details, since Law is definitely one of the more interesting characters in this arc, It would have made this flashback considerably longer. It also seems to me that it’s not really relevant to the current story. The main point of the flashback was to show us the history that Law has with DD, and with his brother Corazon, whose death can be considered the trigger to the current events taking place in Dressrosa.
Law reveals that he is a D to Doflamingo
Law and DD’s fight is raging, both display a good mastery of their art, with Law being able to keep up with DD, despite having suffered several injuries. This should have greatly diminished his stamina, and yet he seems to be unaffected. A conversation ensues between the two, which I think is more important than the fight itself. Law starts by inquiring what DD thinks of Luffy and the fact he’s a D . Law is asking because he only realized that day that Doflamingo was a Tenryuubito.DD wonders if Luffy is really going after him because he’s supposedly fated to,as it is said in the legends about the clan of D and how they are supposed to be “God’s natural enemy”. DD while not being a Tenryuubito anymore, it still linked to them by the blood running in his veins, that he himself qualifies as “the blood of Gods” .Law takes that opportunity to reveal that he is also a D. This point in particular is very interesting for me, it would confirm that DD did not know Law’s full name or the fact that he was a D. It would also mean that Buffalo and Baby 5 kept their mouths shut, and at the same time their promise to Law.It could be that they had no idea of how valuable that piece of information was ,seeing how none of them knew of the legends about D or the fact that Doflamingo was a Tenryuubito, but I like to think that they both still cared for Law, even a little. At that reveal, DD angrily slashes at Law with his strings, and ends up cutting the boulder behind him.
Viola details DD's crew
On the King’s plateau, King Riku is seen with Viola, and he inquires about the various fronts on Dressrosa. Thanks to her Giro Giro no mi, Viola is able to say what is precisely happening on the island. There are 3 fronts: the royal palace, Pica’s statue and the Smile factory. While Law is fighting DD a top of the palace , Luffy was unfortunately sent to the floor below them. A panel is shown detailing DD’s crew, which holds valuable information on DD's crew. While we got the confirmation that Trebol is a mucus man(yuck) , Dellinger ‘s description in particular is interesting. The latter is revealed to be a half fishman, apparently descending from the fighting fish. In before we saw him with what looked like a shark’s fin on his back, the shape of the horns on his hat also ressembles that of the fighting fish in the colosseum.Strangely enough this brings back the possibility of Jora being his mother, and not just a surrogate mother like many of us jokingly hypothesized a while back, when Dellinger was shown as a baby in DD’s crew. This and her strange gimmick of always mishearing people calling her “Mermaid princess” could suggest that she might be an old mermaid. Once they reach a certain age, they can develop human legs, and they have a tendency to be rather ugly, as it was seen previously with Kokoro in Water 7.In fact she looks a great deal like her. But how does that fit with him and the fact that he joined DD’s crew, who is a Tenryuubito by birth? The Tenryuubito are seen having a deep hatred for Fishmen, and many of them were trying to purchase mermaids as slaves. DD himself used to make a living with slave trading, and his auctions sites had mermaids up to purchase. But our DD isn’t any Tenryubito, despite having their rotten ways he also adopted the lifestyle of normal humans, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to think he’d welcomed a mermaid and a half fishman in his crew, as long as they were loyal and useful to him.And if Dellinger is only half fishman, the other half must be human. He could have been persecuted by other fishmen because his parents might have broken a taboo, living together despite them coming from two different species that were seen not getting along .Up to this point it was unheard of that Fishmen and humans can fall in love with each other, and even breed. It’s just speculation at this point, but if it turns out to be true, then this could explain a bit how Dellinger and his mom(if it's her) ended up in DD’s crew.
Another one bites the dust
The next panels are devoted to showing us the ongoing fights. Viola announces that most fights are nearing their end, Senor Pink’s and Franky’s “manly” fight, Zoro’s fight against Pica is taking place a top the statue. Inside the palace, Bartolomeo protects Robin and tells her to go ahead, while he and Cavendish deal with Gladius. In the flower field Kyros is seen having managed to injure Diamante. The latter continues to fight and he uses one of his techniques “Army Flag”.As the name suggests it is seemingly capable of making the ground "wave" like a flag in the wind. Other contenders include the Colosseum fighters facing the Donquixote family officers. Elisabello prepares his punch, Ideo is fighting Dellinger, Machvise is seen stomping Hajrudin thanks to his heavyweight fruit, and Baby 5 is facing Sai, who is far too distracted by the sight of his grandfather taking a beating from Lao G to fight her seriously. I’m a bit disappointed by this, Chinjao was hyped as someone who could fight with Garp in his prime, he possesses Conqueror’s Haki, and is a master of Happo Navy, and yet he’s getting beaten by Lao G. I’d say the latter is quite strong despite his advanced age, he was able to deal a lot of damage to Kyros in his toy form, so that makes him one of the strongest fighters in DD’s crew. We could argue that Lao G had more opportunities to fight while in the Colosseum, whereas Chinjao was supposed to be retired from Happo Navy, but then again it is a bit disappointing to see him bite the dust like that. It is too early to say if he’s defeated for good, perhaps he might be able to make a comeback?
Viola remarks that despite these fights coming to an end, it wouldn't change much to the current situation, since they are still trapped inside the bird cage created by Doflamingo. It appears that taking him out is of the highest priority.
Law manages to injure DD with his Injection shot.
The scene switches back to the fight between Law and DD. In response to Law’s reveal, DD claims that he doesn't have much faith in what he calls superstitions. This statement makes me really wonder if what Corazon said in chapter 763 was accurate, that Law would have been in trouble around DD just because he’s a D. It goes without saying that on the long run they would have both feared for their lives, since apparently DD was looking for the Ope Ope no mi , and sooner or later he would have sacrificed either of them to become immortal, but by staying with the family, Corazon would have been able to finish his mission at least, and perhaps also save Law in the process. Him leaving DD’s crew raised too much suspicion which played a role in Corazon’s downfall . This definitely means that DD wouldn't have hunted down Law just because he’s a D. Perhaps after this the legends about D will be verified, once Law or Luffy effectively beat Doflamingo.
DD is too caught up in the discussion, as a result he inadvertently enters Law’s field. Trebol, who is witnessing their fight this whole time, tries to warn him but it is too late. Law uses his technique “Injection shot” who pierces through Doflamingo’s abdomen. Law reiterates his wish to stop Doflamingo, and “pull the trigger” that Corazon was too kind to pull 10 years ago.
Did Law change his plans about letting Kaido deal with Doflamingo? His words might suggest that he wants to deal with Doflamingo himself, and go as far as kill him. This certainly does not bode well, for two reasons. First revenge rarely made anyone happy, and it rarely gave good results too. And secondly Law thinks he can take on Doflamingo. While it’s true that he was able to inflict a rather serious injury to DD, he shouldn’t let that get to his head or else he will end up seriously underestimating Doflamingo, which could definitely be detrimental to Law.
This was an ok chapter for me, not much can be said since it was mostly a recapitulation of the ongoing fights on Dressrosa. The most important bit is the chat between Law and DD, and finally DD’s injury. While it definitely shows how strong Law is, I doubt that it would incapacitate DD. He already received a red hawk from Luffy, but it didn’t slow him down .Besides we pretty much know that Luffy is the one who will be facing the main villain, so it would make more sense for Law to lose,in order for Luffy to step up and beat DD. While Law is shown to be strong, there’s also the fact that he can't use his power effectively if his stamina gets depleted. Luffy on the other hand is seen to be able to fight, even when he exceeds his limits, once he understands how to deal with his opponent. I expect that in the next chapters we will see most of the fights ending, with the exception of the executives ones. That way we can focus on the more interesting fights like Zoro vs Pica, Diamante vs Kyros. At the moment Trebol isn’t fighting anyone, so if he doesn’t face Law after he gets beaten by DD, there’s a chance Luffy will have to deal with him himself. I don’t personally think that Robin is a good fit for him as some have suggested, since he’s apparently a logia, and her fruit has little chance to work on him. At best she could try to save Law if the latter is about to get killed by Doflamingo.
Luffy was only mentioned in this chapter, last time we saw him as he was thrown to the floor below Law, and is facing both DD’s clone and a string controlled Bellamy. This fight is going to be crucial, since on one hand he’s fighting a string clone which will allow Luffy to learn how the Ito Ito no mi works, and Bellamy who is equipped with swords, against whom Luffy is weak.Jinbei’s cover story is progressing slowly, maybe a bit too much for my taste. Next chapter is going to be action packed, since all the talk about Law and DD’s past seems to be over.
Score: 7/10. While it was informative, it felt rather uneventful, for the exception of DD vs Law.
