One Piece chapter 800- An underling’s vow
Luffy refuses the proposal
Last chapter had the 7 rogues make a proposal to Luffy, to become the SHs underlings in the NW. The proposal came in the form of a parent child relationship, with Luffy becoming the parent of 5600 underlings no less. To seal this deal sake cups are to be exchanged, as part of the underling vow. This chapter we finally get Luffy’s answer, and unsurprisingly he refuses the offer. This greatly surprises Barto and the others, and some like Ideo and Sai are even angered by it.
Luffy's reason for refusing the offer.
But it seems that Luffy’s logic, other than the fact he doesn’t like the taste of alcohol unlike Zoro, is that he sees himself as the next pirate king not some big shot, and it would be the case if he were to accept having a grand fleet thanks to this deal. This greatly puzzles Barto and co, who like pretty much everyone else except Luffy see the Pirate King as an important person. Barto comes to the realization that what Luffy wants is not to be famous, or important like the Yonko, but truly free. At this he starts crying again.
The Yonta Maria is under attack
As they are about to start a party to celebrate DD’s defeat, the Yonta Maria is attacked. Their agressors are none other than DD’s clients who formed an alliance to chase down the SHs. Because of the SHs intervention DD’s business was put to a stop, and as his clients they were greatly affected by it. They swear vengeance as they reveal Luffy’s supposed new bounty, 500 millions. Tbh I expected it to be slightly higher than that, at least 550 millions, but I wonder if Fujitora didn’t have a hand in Luffy’s bounty not being too high. DD’s clients continue to attack the Yonta Maria, which they claim it would be a great feat to take down, and this proves that Orlumbus and his fleet are a force to be reckoned with.
Fujitora helps the SHs as a parting gift.
Suddenly rubble and what remained of Pica’s statue fall from the sky, and crush onto the SHs assailants ships. There can be only one person capable of this, Fujitora himself. It seems he wanted to help Luffy as a thanks for what he did for the country, and also for wiping out the WG’s ass in his own words, which is heard by Sengoku. This makes Fujitora easily my favorite admiral, I know there is still Ryokugyu that we haven’t seen, but right now Fujitora strikes me as a good person, who doesn’t go by the rules all the time, and who is fed up of the WG’s hypocrisy.
The underling's vow.
Thanks to Fujitora’s interference the Yonta Maria and its occupants are able to get rid of their pursuers.Despite Luffy’s refusal the 7 rogues decide to go ahead with the underling vow.Just as Luffy is free to do whatever he wants, the others are also free to follow the SHs, even against Luffy’s own wishes. They solemnly exchange the cups which effectively launches the grand SH fleet. Luffy is frustrated, and points out that he didn’t drink his cup, which makes the vow null, but it doesn’t matter. In fact it was Zoro who drank the cup, which for me makes it count even if it’s not Luffy himself^^.
It's party time.
And with this it is time to party. They’re finally able to relax and start enjoying themselves, and as the chapter ends, the narrator explains how the 7 rogues will continue to grow strong in the NW and that they will cause a big incident in the future. This is a rather interesting foreshadowing, that might be linked to the final war which will most likely oppose the SHs and their allies to the WG’s forces. And because we got the usual party at the end it seems that this arc is finally over. With next chapter possibly setting the foundations of the next arc, by showing us what the Curly hats have been up to since they are still missing.
And another question remains, that is knowing who will be the next nakama. With Barto and the others becoming allies for the SHs rather than joining, and with Rebecca and Kyros staying in Dressrosa as they should, it doesn’t leave that much candidates to choose from. However there is a lone pirate who is currently looking for a crew, and who has been missing despite being seen escaping from the Marines with Luffy and the others back at Kyros’ house. Will the Hyena join the SHs, or would it be Law’s crew?
Based on my enjoyment of this chapter I’m giving it a 9 out 10 rating. As much as I wanted Luffy to accept the offer it would just be out of character I guess. But the outcome is still the same because Luffy’s still got his
