I think he sees something in coby, not quite sure what but...something...

that's why i think he formed coby in a certain way

well if not the same very similar. here is my theory.

i think the cloak represents that the person who wears it, is the strongest swordsman in the world. it would explain why mihawk and shanks fought each other so. they were battling to see who was the better swordsman, to carry on the tradition. what ever happened, mihawk was chosen.


it would explain there friendship and what seems to be a healthy respect for each other.


rogers and luffy are so much alike and it would only make sense that they thought alike. the same speech zoro gave luffy about his dream, rayleigh probably told roger something similar

@Chess4- As long as Mihawk is only superior to Shanks in swordsmanship, it's alright. I don't want Shanks to be completely inferior to Mihawk, because that just gives Mihawk an even higher ranking in the One Piece world.

If I'm not mistaken ... hmm ... I think someone has already come up with something like this, and I guess it was Lord Rayleigh with a magnificent post illustrating your theory.

The patterns are only vaguely similar. The coats aren't the same really. There's the difference in sleeves. Lot of pirates don't have shirts under their coats. Maybe they just had similar taste in fashion.
Anyway, why would every best swordsman have to wear the same coat? Is there a "strongest swordsman committee" that sponsors the best swordsman and dictates his dressing style?

I remember some old theory how some pirates were connected because they had spots on their pants or something like it? You know, Kuma, Law and some others. Can't remember what was it about really.

Mihawks was definitely not wearing the same coat when Roger died.
The collar here is totally black and the rest of his coat has a design on it.
The current coat of Mihawks has a a collar with a design on it - different from the one he had when Roger died - and the rest of his coat is entirely black.

It does not mean that every best swordsman has to wear the same coat, it only means Rayleigh was the strongest swordman of his time. It's difficult to claim they've a different design on their collar and their outfits does not look alike. Besides, Rayleigh - the Dark King swordman - is the only case with similar outfits to Mihawks. So, I doubt Oda drawn Rayleigh that way in Chapter 0 by a curious coincidence.
