Especially putting out a new bounty with the Nika picture! They also want to silence D. but put his name fully on the bounty posters. For a 800 year old organization, they make some crucial mistakes.

(We all know Nika was retconned, like come on...)
Wasn't Morgans responsible for Luffy picture as Nika on the poster?

I don't care how useful Garp was afterward, there is literally ZERO justification for the WG not absolutely annihilating EVERYONE with the D name. They're somehow so absolutely meticulous in crushing dissent for the better part of a thousand years, but also inept enough to just leave D's wandering around. And it's not like the D's actually even know how dangerous they are to the WG, but the WG absolutely does know how dangerous they are.

We are talking about an organization that had an entire baby-murdering campaign just to snuff out Roger's bloodline, who eradicated entire races like the lunarians and buccanneers, who have the power to straight up erase countries off the map. But they let D's join the navy. They have an intelligence network that is the greatest in the world, but the rubber kid who constantly screams his full name and intent to become Pirate King was somehow not their problem until well after he hijacked Robin, shot down their flag, allied with emperors, and was in the final act of his fight with Kaidou before they woke the fuck up to the problem.

It's just bad storytelling. I love Oda, I love One Piece, but this specific shit don't make sense.

Wano will hurt me to no end.

Although, trying to play Devil's advocate, can we really say they didn't try to take Luffy out?
We can say the moment they should have known about him was post-east blue since he didn't get his 30 million bounty until after he took out Arlong, he was barely popular until then.

He's gone from Arlong as a no name, let's say we give the benefit of the doubt, at this point they're looking out for him. They probably can't send Admirals at this point to East blue, it would be pretty excessive for some no-name Pirate, they'd probably be expecting he'll meet up with competition and die.

At this point, we don't see any aggressive pursuit, but he pretty much decides to take on Crocodile, he's running into trouble on his own volition. I don't think they even had his whereabouts at this point.

After defeating Crocodile, he is given a 100m bounty, he goes missing into Skypiea and returns at Enies Lobby. From there, they sent out a Buster-call to Enies Lobby even though CP9 was already on the case, so that is a major major attempt. They may not have said "take him out, he has this DF", but without giving out all the details, just this amount of force shows how much they wanted to take him out.

From Thriller Bark, they actually send Kuma to take him out which should have worked, he only survived due to luck.
Being fair, I think sending Kuma to take out anyone at this point a major and beyond necessary level of force, Kuma pretty much defeated the SHs and he survived only because Kuma had mercy on him.
Let's not forget they didn't even have faith in Moriah, a Shichibukai would defeat him, they sent a 2nd Shichibukai which is nuts!
They anticipated his journey to Thriller Bark, but still thought of sending Kuma.

At Sabaody, they sent an Admiral to ignore every other Supernova beside Luffy.

I think the problem with the whole Nika DF thing is we were not explicitly told about the fruit, but I have to say, I think they really threw what was beyond reasonable to take him out.
Not many in the Supernova have remotely come close to being pursued as much as the SHs.

The only reason Luffy survived all these instances for the most part is luck, not for a lack of trying from the WG. I think the big problem is Oda didn't really detail how much was going into his capture.
Though I agree, the story telling in this instance isn't great, and at the same time, I think he also wanted to make the surprise as minimally hinted as possible, but also reasonable enough to call it a retcon.

Personally, I think in retrospect, they did throw the kitchen sink at him showing how important he was, in terms of even bounty, his meteoric rise is unparalleled.
And we have so many instances where people have mentioned how rubber shouldn't work the way it did.

I would also add that Luffy being a god until Awakening isn't great, but perhaps, before Awakening, one could argue that his luck is based on his godly powers.

I am sure if you read my comments during the Wano arc, I was completely in agreement about this being a retcon, but I guess you can look at it in different ways.

Gonna play a bit more of devil's advocate here.. But this is what imu says about Ds:
"the d refers to those we opposed in the days long past"
"The Ds that emerged in various incidents in recent years are nothing more than hollow shells who fail to understand the meaning of their names"

Even now Imu, and by extension the world government, sees this as an ancient past. Assholes who carry a name that means nothing to them. To us readers it makes more sense that Ds are a big deal because of the plot and our increasing understanding of their place in history and it is clear that the inherited will at play here is building up to something. But this just isn't what the WG is doing, imu isn't reading the manga.

The Ds are surely still viewed as a threat to the WG which is why the likes of Law still has to hide his D. iniital.

I guess the reason why Garp is not killed off is because he is actually an asset to the WG taking care of Pirates, so it would be a waste to do away with him. However, I did read a One Piece Magazine saying Garp named Dragon after the Celestial Dragons in the sense that he dreamt that Dragon would oppose the Celestial Dragon, and become the new Dragon in the same sense Momo the Dragon replaced Kaido the Dragon.

I think post Marineford, there is a scene where the Gorosei complain about these "D" people popping up, so while they have the benefit of Ds not really understanding their name and history which can only be understood from finding the One Piece, they still consider them a threat, and they still end up being at the centre of pretty much every major chaotic event in the world.

There was Xebec, Teach, Dragon, Luffy, even Garp is pretty much appearing to be a trojan horse as he is against the Celestial Dragons and trying to raise a generation of officers with morals and a righteous sense of justice.
He even wanted to recruit Ace and Luffy into the WG, I think the issue is like real life, people think the only way they can carry out justice by joining the army, or the police force when these organisations might actually be the most corrupt, but people put blind faith into these organisations until its too late and they realise they didn't change much.
I feel like Garp is this sort of character, and if one wants to bring out change outside of the status quo like from the established institutions, you will be considered a criminal or terrorist. I guess even Aokiji is similar, he wanted justice from within the WG, but now he's found another way to go about it.
In a sense, I feel like Dragon and Aokiji are similar, ironic both his protégés are defects, and lord know Koby defecting would be hilarious, perhaps Sword will not just be its own unit, but actually defect from the WG to try to establish a new WG.

My point is that their intelligence network should have lit up like a Christmas tree the second ANY D IS EVER DISCOVERED. The WG should know about him the second that marine reported him at Shells Town. It's similar to other problems that are all brought to a head by the introduction of the Empty Throne and how much Oda is showing us the Gorosei know and control and have access to. It's up there with stuff like "Why the hell don't they have a fortress around Reverse Mountain?" The answer is probably just "Oda hadn't thought that far ahead".

There should be a blackout order over the last 800 years of iron rule to snuff out and all D's that ever so much as made a chirp. Luffy should have never been born because Garp should've been ganked while he was still young and only showing extreme promise- loooong before he became famous as "The Hero".

"The bad guy is conveniently arrogant" already describes at least 90% of the antagonists in One Piece, I don't buy it for the guys that have successfully ruled the world for 800 years. Possibly even *personally*, if they are that old then there's REALLY no reason not to hunt down the D's if they were that big of a deal back then. It'd be like if instead of enacting Order 66, Palpatine just sorta watched tv and ate chips.

WG does not want to erase Nika’s knowledge because it would make Nika fruit magically disappear from existence. They want to erase the knowledge of Nika for the same reason they want to erase the knowledge about the Void Century and the Ancient Kingdom: this ancient knowledge generates a risk that the conflict between AK and 20 kingdoms restart in the present considering Joy Boy left all the artefacts (One Piece and Ancient Weapons) for someone to pick up his fight in the future. This was clearly stated by WB during his last words in Marineford - the people of WG live in fear of a massive world war after One Piece is found and someone accepts to take the weight of history on his shoulders.

You mean the same arrogant measly humans who believe themselves to be literal gods? I don't think it's arrogance alone though, it's the simple fact that the original Ds were defeated. The current ones are from the gorosei perspective just assholes with a name who don't stand for anything. From the tenryubito perspective just an old story to scare children. Ds are a big deal to us readers because of the whole inherited will/passing of the torch theme the manga has going on at times. In their godly arrogance they believe this flame was snuffed eons ago and believe all their shit won't come back to bite them in their royal asses. I'd say this makes sense for immortal asshats who never passed anything to a next generation.

Hmm, I'd compare that more to palpatine for some inane reason being rather chill about a few jedi roaming the galaxy freely.

My initial understanding was only a D. could fulfil the One Piece which is why Roger had Ace hoping he'd be the one to fulfil the mission, but it turns out the D. was Luffy.
I believe the Gorosei know that any D. characters that oppose them are essentially a threat and are plausibly the ones who will carry on Joyboy's will, however, I guess since Garp is actually working for the WG, he's not a threat in that sense, and I would guess that part of the reason they have left him within the WG is that it's best to keep your enemies close, so you know exactly what they're doing. Garp being with the Navy essentially means he has no chance to really get invested in the WG would be my guess.

Other part of this process in fulfilling Joyboy's wishes is one has to eat the Gomu Gomu no Mi, and I do wonder if this is why Shanks bet on Luffy. One thing I have realised is this:
  • VOAT is an ability that allows one to communicate with Sea Kings and Zunesha. The Seakings acknowledged that Luffy could hear them, but they won't respond to him most likely because he's not Poseidon, they only take orders from Poseidon.
  • The other is Zunesha also heard Luffy, as Luffy responded back to her just like with the Sea Kings, but she never responded because Luffy isn't Momo who I feel is possibly Uranus or at least, he's an important figure.
  • It looks like being a D. allows you to hear the Ancient Weapons and things heavily associated with the Ancient Past, but I would suspect that once someone Awakens with Nika Nika no Mi, they gain acknowledgement from Sea Kings and Zunesha - we know Zunesha was happy to hear Joyboy's heart which imo suggests she would now speak with Luffy if he spoke to her..

By the looks of it, it seems the requirement to find the One Piece and fulfil the missions is:
  • Being a D.
  • Eating the Gomu Gomu no Mi,
  • Befriend someone that can speak the Ancient Language and Decipher it.
  • Befriend Poseidon, Zunesha and other things that are related to the Ancient Past.
  • Of course, the 4 Road Poneglyphs.

I think they want Nika's knowledge erased for 2 reasons, the same reason as the Void Century, but also because Nika Nika no Mi is supposedly a KEY to to not just learn of the Void Century, but to take action.

Let's not forget that the Gorosei fear Kaido so much that the WG wouldn't dare go to Wano almost under any circumstances, and they DARED to actually interfere in Kaido's fight with Luffy even if it meant angering Kaido.
In essence, they'd rather the Nika Nika no Mi was gone even if it means angering Kaido which speaks volumes.

They could have prioritised stealing Kaido's Poneglyphs which I am sure they know is in Wano, but they chose to snuff out the Nika Nika no Mi over everything else by the looks of it. Nika being around might be slightly more of a threat than everything else as it seems to be a key to unlock parts of this goal.
You could probably be a D, you could probably have a Robin, you could have the 4 Road Poneglyph, but it looks like without Nika, you can't gain acknowledgement from Zunesha which is probably necessary, and maybe even with Poseidon fully.
We have also seen this Ancient Robot react to Nika's heart beat, so there may be more to Nika's heart beat than we know, what else can it affect?

Luffy should have never been born because Garp should've been ganked while he was still young and only showing extreme promise- loooong before he became famous as "The Hero".
I actually think most of the D family actually conceal their names. Law did conceal his D initial as we learnt in Dressrosa.

I believe when Luffy revealed his name to the WG as Monkey D. Luffy, NO ONE knew he was the grand-son of Garp or son of Dragon until chapter 431, but only after Garp let is slip meaning despite Luffy's poster saying Monkey D., no one knew meaning, the naval officers were all shocked meaning they have hidden their initials to some extent.
Even at Marineford, no one knew Luffy in chapter 558, it is only after Sengoku announced his relation to Dragon that people knew he was Dragon's son meaning no one associates Monkey D. with Dragon or Garp, Smoker then uses this knowledge to explain Dragon's actions at Logue town.

However, it seems only Admirals and those with high ranks within the WG knew that Garp was a Monkey D. meaning most of the population don't know, and only high ranks know.

I suspect that the majority of people with D. names do not let people know their initials. Law said D. was his Alias and Water was a name his family had hidden for generations, which to me seems to suggest that D. people hide their initial and they also have hidden surnames which is why Law's name is just Trafalgar Law to the world, so quite possible those with D. initials also have surnames we're unaware of at this moment.

I am at this moment convinced the Ds do hide their name, and Garp is an exception, he probably let it out by the time he was highly ranked and the WG had found him useful, from then, they realised since Dragon was his son, he was also a Monkey D. That would be my theory at least.
One thing for sure, the WG in chapter 594 or 3 said something like these Ds are just popping out of nowhere. Based on Law's statements, I am convinced they were persecuted, otherwise they wouldn't have hidden their names.

Also, it seems that they are wary about the D. names once it makes it into a poster if said person becomes notorious, so it looks like they try to act as if the name means nothing unless the person becomes notorious, at which point like we saw with Luffy once he became Nika, they wanted both the D. initial and image scraped from his identity.

Sorry, but that's completely false. They dealt with Roger, otherwise he won't have a bounty even higher than Whitebeard. Roger had the highest bounty in the series so far, yet you claim they didn't deal with him? You don't get a bounty for doing nothing, you get a bounty for causing the WG problems.

Name every time Luffy's bounty went up.... it was right after he did something huge... so a close to 6 billion bounty is for not dealing with a Pirate, if anything it's for being unable to deal with a Pirate.
If you have a bounty it essentially means the WG has not been able to do anything about you unless they apprehend you which they couldn't do against Roger.

Roger never created an idea like Nika, nor did he make people believe in goals or freedom.
All Roger did was find the One Piece and tell people to look for it, he didn't do anything other than that to put it simply.

You don't need someone to tell you "bro you're a slave, why not try that thing where.... you're not a slave, great idea? right?".
If you're a slave, you want freedom, that's just a fact.

It is special, not sure if you read what Sengoku said in Marineford, and why Whitebeard adopted him. Sengoku said Ace was special for having Roger's blood because he has the potential to be the strongest, so he had to be killed quickly.
Whitebeard also adopted him for similar reasons, he wanted someone that could succeed him, and what did Whitebeard say on his deathbed? He said One Piece was real, and he also spoke with Roger concerning the One Piece, so Ace was a special person.
Whitebeard was raising Ace to be Pirate King.
Furthermore, Roger wanted a son because he wanted Ace to fulfil the One Piece which he couldn't since Poseidon wasn't alive.
Killing Ace was beyond symbolic, it was pretty much just as important as killing Luffy because otherwise, it's a problem for their future.

Completely false, I don't know where you're getting your information from, but you don't get a bounty if the WG don't intend to catch or kill you. They did attack Ace, maybe you haven't read the novels which are canon.
Only Shicibukai get exemptions from such things.

Again, this is not true. We don't know much of Roger's era to say they weren't mentioned, and that is HIGHLY unlikely, these are people who rule the world and Roger also knew the full history which would have mentioned the Gorosei and Imu.

Also, they don't have much more desire for Nika than Roger, I don't think you understand that Roger and Nika are intertwined.
Acquiring the Nika DF doesn't stop people from going after the One Piece which Roger made a more common goal in the Pirate World.
Without Nika or Luffy, you still have Kid, Law, and countless other Pirates going after the One Piece, so there's just no truth to what you're saying here.

Furthermore, the idea they didn't have great desire for Roger is just so far from the truth.
  • Roger had the highest bounty among all pirate.
  • They literally went to war against an Emperor which they rarely do just to kill his son.
  • Roger started the Pirate age which increase the number of pirates in so much that the WG begun to use Pirates to fight Pirates (Shichibukai).
I don't know how you can seriously try to underplay how huge a role Roger played and how much of a thorn he is to the WG. Even in death, his actions are still haunting them - the fact there are so many Pirates and the fact more people are looking for the One Piece... heck, the fact even Luffy wants to be a Pirate is also inspired by Roger.

If we enumerate Luffy's luck, it is other worldly.

  1. This guy went to Punk Hazard when Law just happened to be there? Someone who knew the whole layout of Punk Hazard.
  2. Then from Punk Hazard, went to Dressrosa to defeat Joker on the day that just so happens to have the RA, 100s of people from all over fighting in the colosseum later to be allies.... and then an Admiral that got sent over who would just happen to take a liking to Luffy (any Admiral other than Fujitora would have killed Luffy realistically).
  3. Saving Dressrosa just so happens to save Zou who are connected to Wano and Roger, and because of that, the Minks took a liking to Luffy and aided him in his endeavour to take down Kaido.
  4. Let's not forget he went to WCI, Jimbei just happened to be there with the Fishman Pirates.
  5. Bege happened to be a part of the BMP for a couple years, got the lay of the land, the dynamics and such as if he was stationed there by Luffy to scout before he decided to make a move.
  6. Or even look at Marineford, they fell from the sky after escaping Impel Down on the only spot in Marineford where the ice had melted... otherwise everyone there would have died.
So many things just so happen to align in his favour without ANY PLANNING at all, it's insane.

A certain amount of luck is natural, but the luck Luffy has is a bit too much.... I haven't even mentioned everything, there's still so many instances where luck has been the huge factor. Marineford, Law just happens to decide to go there on a whim which he said himself and he survived Kizaru's attacks which he said only luck could be a thing.

In fact, I'll just say this one thing, when the Gorosei spoke of the Nika Nika DF, they said things just happened to stop them from acquiring the fruit. When Who's who was escorting the DF, the Gorosei said it's like the DF purposefully escapes them... and what happens to Who's who? Shanks appears out of nowhere and steals the fruit, I mean how convenient no?
And these actions of divine luck are also consistent with Luffy, so at least, I think a fair argument could be made that this GOD DF actually has some power of luck associated to it, I don't think it is unreasonable.

We also have an instance where Saturn has said "If your FATE(Luck) is strong enough to escape this situation, let me see you try". It is so weird for anyone to have this much luck, it makes the most sense if this is a DF power imo.

Apparently the Ancient Robot woke up 200 years ago and climbed up Mariejoa, so I do wonder, was there another Gum Gum user 200 years ago? Or did the Robot only become active 200 years ago with the energy it had left from 900 years ago?
I am looking forward to fuiture chapter.

It would be so wild if Luffy gets stronger the more people believe in him. He'd pretty much be unstoppable, lol.
The WG is make up of different sections. Once again you failed to prove that the Gorosei ever directly considered Roger a threat. Bounties are day to day things, Gorosei get involved in existential threats. Again you seem to imply I don't think the WG didn't want to get rid of him. They did, but they weren't taking extra steps the way they do with Luffy. There was no evidence of sending any specific assassins against him.

Roger completely created an idea: the idea that anyone could find OP and be King of the Pirates. Let's try this... he started "the great pirate age" with his words. He had charm/charisma. He sold an idea that you could be free.

Nika as a idea of freedom was only known in the lowest of places (prisons, slavery). However much bigger threat to Gorosei. Therefore after every time Luffy did something they sent an assassin/shichibukai after him.

If that's not clear think about Robin and how the Gorosei (not Navy, the Gorosei) have made direct request to eliminate her constantly. Have they made the same requests to deal with Buggy? Crocodile? Mihawk? Zoro? Shanks? Nope. But they want to silence/kill this girl more than anything else.

You can't possibly say the Gorosei are more personally into eliminating any other pirate (Luffy excluded) than they are Robin. It's the same argument.

The navy however, has different ideas and while the elders speak for the navy, the navy doesn't speak for the elders.

Once again you failed to prove that the Gorosei ever directly considered Roger a threat.
There's nothing to debate if you think this, you're dead wrong, lol. The entire story is pretty much based on him, not sure what you're talking about dude.

He didn't start it with his words, he started it with his achievement, and someone asked where they could find it.

You can't just spout nonsense, if Buggy was the one being executed, unless he had achieved what no one else could, no one would care about his treasure.

Roger was the greatest pirate, so people wanted his treasure because he achieved what no one else could, but this will definitely be my last comment to you. There's really nothing to talk about if you're actually arguing Roger's threat to the WG.

1) We don't know if they're literally humans and not literal gods at this point. The more the story goes and the more that word gets thrown around, the more doubt should be cast over who is what.

2) The Ds being defeated and then just letting their descendants live IS "just" arrogance. Extraordinary arrogance, but just arrogance nonetheless. Idgaf about the common celestial dragon, the Gorosei, Imu, and probably God's Knights should all know better than to understimate the Ds from personal experience.

Funny you say that, because there's a whole-ass plot about Palpatine exactly not being arrogant about that, and going out of his way to hunt down not just jedi but force-sensitive people who could even *possibly* tilt toward the light side of the force. I cannot believe Sheev Palpatine is more competent than the final endboss dictators of One Piece, an otherwise vastly superior story. Embarrassing.

Hm? I'd say it's pretty clear the gorosei and imu are not in fact gods, at least not in any way that makes them worth than any other life sentient species in the story.

I think we have a different headcanon regarding D's background. As far as we have seen D's have been present across species and families. Odds are they were pretty damn numerous in the past, perhaps even making up a big chunk of the ancient kingdom army or just the kingdom in general. I don't think it was just ten assholes from back in the day. Add to that the possibility that people over time for whatever reason simply adopted the initial in spite of not having any blood connection to anyone related to this because a lot of themes here break blood ties. Bsaically, Ds were insanely numerous in the past and their few descendants scattered in the wind.

That depends on the star wars material. As thorough as palpatine was about this he was pretty adamant about vader not obsessing over kenobi and eventually stopped giving a crap about the rebels cast. Palpatine is definitely more competent and way less immortal than OP villains though, the guy took over a galaxy within a lifetime.

That's assuming the D have some sort of special power like the Jedi.

We aren't sure what the D are yet.

The D could be a clan of all sorts of people

The D could be a lineage, and even individuals of other races like Giants could have an ancestor

I imagine this involves the grudge against Saturn.
Oda did a great job of....

1. Keeping Saturn in mystery for 1000+ Chapters

2. Revealing the reason to hate him at the same time as reviewing his identity.

And it makes me wonder if Oda will write him to be worse than Orochi, by having Saturn take someone down in present day, like what happened with Yasuie.

Probably will, these are the highest powers in the world. They've done unimaginable crimes.

The thing that made Roger laughed his ass off maybe because the world goverment itself was a pirate crew in the past. This manga is always about free people from evil pirates that rule over them.
