That has always kept the fanbase guessing. Is it 10 including Luffy or 10 excluding Luffy?

I always hoped it was 10 excluding Luffy, but I am not so sure. I don't see how much value adding another member would bring at this point in the story unless it is someone so heavily tied into the current plot. Which leaves only Vivi. There is no other potential Straw Hat in the whole of One Piece that ties into the final plot lines more so than Vivi, she is already considered part of the crew anyway.

Now I think of it as, Does Vivi need to join the Straw Hats? Could she fulfill her story line with Imu without needing to be a part of Luffy's crew?

Or can her story continue in parallel like it has been?

The only ways I see her properly joining is after a bit more information is released that:
  • She finds resolve that leads her to needing to be alongside Luffy to experience the truth.
  • She becomes the damsel in distress and Luffy saves her.
  • She has something to add that will help take down Imu.
Other than those, she really doesn't need to be a part of the crew.

Given how Vivi is so tied in, she still has to qualify, I don't think Oda is going to be able to drum up a more fitting case to add to the crew he is already breaking up often to get through an arc.
Excluding Luffy himself, because if it was just 10 total instead of 11 total, then wouldn't he have said "Luffy's crew of nine?

Also, I've never seen Oda mention this, but I understand that the idea to have the Straw Hats be a crew of 11 is because soccer teams usually have 11 people, since Oda is a soccer fan.

And as for Vivi, I wouldn't be surprised if Oda wanted to clear up Vivi's circumstances first before having Luffy's 10th person join. I have good reason to believe it's still going to be Yamato, since Yamato hasn't given up and is likely going to reunite after Blackbeard attacks Wano.

So, it could turn out that Vivi decides to still want to support and be Queen of Alabasta, and is only with Luffy as a temporary measure to sort out the mess. Yamato could meanwhile join, possibly as to act on the missing info from Oden's journal, since info had been ripped out of it.

Of course, I could turn out to be wrong. Maybe Yamato gives up on sailing with Luffy, while Vivi gives up on Alabasta and becomes Luffy's 10th and final crewmate instead.

"Luffy's crew of 10" is not definitive though, he is a part of the crew and that statement doesn't imply his inclusion or exclusion, no matter how you twist it either way could be true, hence the ongoing debate.

Yamato won't join. She had the perfect set-up to go and that ship sailed (lol). She and Momo (who has far more plot tie in) will be allies along with the rest of Wano for the war. Yamato stays back to make sure Momo doesn't die when Blackbeard takes Pluton, they join the final war after. Yamato would have to find Luffy and join, Strawhats will be after the final Road Poneglyph by then and I don't see Yamato who comes from a closed country and has never sailed before, not only finding the Straw Hats but finding the Straw Hats whilst in pursuit of the elusive burn scar man... that would be the biggest ass pull to have a satelite character join. Oda has set her up as a strong ally in the future, if she were to be a Straw Hat she would have joined when she was set-up to be, there is no better time than the time that has passed.

And that's interesting, since Jinbe basically turned down Luffy to sail with him twice at Fish-Man Island and Whole Cake, and I could easily have seen people make a similar argument about Jinbe never "actually" joining.

But again, if this turns out to be wrong, then we can expect Oda making a chapter showing Yamato giving up on sailing so as to better support Momo, and Momo likewise making a response to that.

Same could prob be said for Vivi too.

Jinbe had a lot more time to join, he kept popping back up in the story. It is entirely different for Yamato given we are at the end of the story and she adds nothing to the story or crew.

I am open to being wrong but it is clear that Vivi is being written back into significance. I can't say the same for any other character.

I mean, Yamato popped back up in a cover story just like Jinbe did, since obviously Oda isn't letting the last chapter scare him away from giving Yamato more attention where he feels it's appropriate.

Heck, he even put in the time to give Bonney and Kuma more development and have some notable connection with Luffy, despite Bonney in particular never having interacted with Luffy before Egghead.

So I know Oda is always open to give anyone more development where he feels like it, even if it's the final saga.

So thus, until Yamato and Vivi die or give up on Luffy, then I know I have good reason to believe Yamato and Vivi can be brought back like how Jinbe was. I'm certainly not going to let the last chapter scare me into changing my mind on that and assume Oda has become a slacker at properly following things up. lol

I mean Yamato probably has Luffy’s Vivre Card and Momo can fly.🤷‍♂️

It used to be quite clear, with BB also having 10 key crew members. These days, not so sure given BB is likely not the last boss and we could have a temp alliance whenever that fight happens.

Let me ask you this.

What value does Yamato joining the straw hats give to to:

  • The Story?
  • The Strawhat Crew? (Like, what would she even do on the ship? They all have jobs)
If you can answer both those points convincingly then I can see her joining. Because Vivi already has both of those areas covered.

This is the logic I can't deny. That fight has to be evenly matched in terms of numbers. For that fight I can't see Vivi excelling in but lots of other characters filling in to succeed. Unless Vivi gets a DF or power up, someone else is stepping in.

On topic, in this chapter, I think we're going to see sportsball, teams, and gaming. So, Viking games.

Regarding the crew member thing, here's what I think:
1. It's too hard to juggle too many crew members at once. Adding top tiers like Yamato and Jinbe endangers the danger factor. I'm pretty sure Jinbe was kept off the crew was because adding him in too early makes arcs easier. For example, Jinbe in Dressrosa would have left a strawhat free to assist elsewhere. Doflamingo just didnt have enough top tier people to handle the onslaught of named characters.
2. I totally think Kuma is joining in some form. I think Yamato has less chances of joining properly compared to Kuma.
3. In 2014, Oda said in the china times: Later, he said "After 17 years, after more and more new characters being created in the story, I couldn't stop inspiration coming into my head. I think I can continue drawing for another decade." - He also says that more members will join the Straw Hats! "And there will be new nakama, they will show up successively." In 2014, we are in Dressrosa. Now mind you, this MIGHT have referred to the grand fleet. Don't know. Hope not.
4. Regarding Jinbe, people sometimes forget that Oda said the next nakama after Brook was going to be a "former boss." What did people call Jinbe? Boss Jinbe. Jinbe had all the energy on him.
5. I think final war will be the only arc where we actually have the "full crew." We will probably get a full spread of the complete crew.

I'm ready to defend my opinions :3c

I’d say Yamato joining with give the Straw Hats Pirates a closer link to Wano with Yamato as a Wano representative like how Oden was for the Roger Pirates, looking for important answers like how he was.

Yamato I’d also say would def be helpful as a rearguard sort of figure, giving more defense/back-up to the crew.

There might have possibly been less Vegapunk corpses if Yamato had been there helping out, given how Yamato protected Momo.

Vivi is a descent of the 20 kings, a rightful monarch on her own and a member of the D. Clan, I can foresee her awakening conquers, she is also very stubborn and doesn’t take orders easy

Sorry man, I don't mean to be shooting down your theories. But that just doesn't sell it.

Strawhats already have the closest link to Wano with Momo, who they put into power and already sailed with for years of our time.

Yamato being a strong fighter really just strengthens her helping with fighting the war, she doesn't need to join the crew for that. She could be leading Wano into the war, that I can see.

I don't think Oda is going to make Yamato sail with the Strawhats for the sake of it being cool.

There needs to be a plot reason for Luffy to take someone with him to Imu.

Not sure about Conqueror’s, but in any case, Oda took the time to give Vivi links to the Will of D. and the Void Century through her ancestor Lili.

So if Oda had Vivi join with the purpose of better understanding her Will of D. legacy now on her shoulders after Cobra died, I’d accept that.

Do you disagree that Yamato couldn’t have been helpful by helping protect more of the Vegapunk satellites, possibly saving at least one of them from becoming corpses after how she protected Momo? Because I suppose that’s where I agree to disagree then.

I think she has one of the best coc claims in the story, it’s been noted descents of the 20 kings commonly have coc, of the non useless and non gag descents, we have doffy, atleast 1 gorosei, shanks, and probably Garling. Imu also likely a member of the 20 kings almost certainly has coc.

it’s also noted the D clan commonly have coc, and as do people with kingly claims

No I agree she would have helped. I just didn't address it as it is beside the point. Anyone with decent fighting ability would have helped minimize the casualties there.

This is the crux of my argument, there has to be significance and reason for another Straw Hat to join, otherwise we just have another character reacting to the current situation and the characters in the spotlight. Why add another character to draw doing what the current characters like Usopp, Nami, Chopper, Franky, Robin and Brook do now? For what reason?

Every arc has Strawhats in the spotlight. For a character to join they usually have an arc together and crush the big bad together, then they join filling a role on the crew with their dream clearly stated "World's #1 swordsman, All Blue, Map the world etc..".

Vivi initially joined but left because didn't have that dream/goal, she had Alabasta to look after and so she postponed it.

Now she does have that goal, the Big Bad has killed her dad, her ancestor betrayed the big bad and to top it off, the big bad is obsessed with Lili to the point of carrying a freaking picture of Vivi because they are identical. She is a D too!

Yamato has "I want to live like Oden" which she is carrying out. The only reason I see her joining the straw hats is to "Live like Oden" which is "I want to sail with the Future Pirate King" which is what Oden did...which is a pretty weak reason at this point and besides Jinbe already took that reason, and added the help of "Helmsman" to the crew too.

It has to be Vivi if it's going to be anyone. There is no stronger case.

I hope it is something connected to Yggdrasil, I wonder how Oda will explore the lore of the tree, especially how he is going to interpret norse mythology. From European point of view Oda's interpretation of europeans myths are really good and fresh (and he saved the best for last, first elbaph and norse mythology, next final arc and greek mythology I guess)
I propose Yggdrasil is going to tie into the creation of devil fruits. There's been some weird maleability with how devil fruits are classified that makes me feel like the process of thei
“Truly at the start I thought ‘ONE PIECE’ would end in five years, and in about a year and a half Luffy's crew of ten would have gathered together. I thought of it like a video game but I was far too naive! It's not that I wanted things to keep getting longer, that's just what ended up happening!!” - https://docs.google.com/document/d/...Dh-4Xe0riNQZOvhOoDa2b2_euttfOzz6PMAe76MHg/pub
It really supports my guess that a bunch of New World stuff was planned *really* early on. I can imagine him drafting up plans for a giant island when he was really, really young considering the whole Vicky the Viking thing from his childhood. I think Wano and Elbaf were always going to be the last couple of big islands before The Final Island. On that note I also think Lode Star and Laugh Tale were originally the same island before Oda had to expand the world to accomodate the expansion of the story. Same thing with Paradise and the New World- I think the Grand Line was originally just "the Grand Line".

I do agree that would be a pretty lackluster cause for someone to join, especially after Jinbe joined with the hopes that him joining would get him closer to the resolution of getting slavery and war between fish-men and humans to disappear.

I personally think it's not too late for Oda to still develop Yamato with more purpose. He's going to have to answer up to that soon given the cover story and Blackbeard possibly coming to Wano because of Caribou's info anyway.

And in the event Oda gives more purpose, such as searching for the missing answers for Momo regarding Joy Boy and such, then all the better. If not, then I'll apologize for being wrong then.

You're probably not wrong.
Fact: The Shichibukai are the biggest reason One Piece expanded. Oda said this. They were not there from the start.
Fact: The Four Emperors as a group were the ones who were planned from the start.

Wano has roots in Monsters, so the idea of it was probably there from the start.
Elbaf, I haven't found any serious implication of it pre Grand Line, so I can't help here.

One thing is that since "New World" is such a critical term in pirate history, some version of the new world was probably planned.
That said, since the shichibukai were the dominant force of Paradise, story-wise, we have to conclude that getting into the new world was going to be easier.

Also, we know that Game of Thrones influenced the Dressrosa era forward, so there was probably expansion that occurred there with Doflamingo establishing the "Throne Wars" narratively. Vegapunk's setup of the critical "players" in the coming war is probably a direct result of Oda liking game of thrones.
