I know this is my theory, and the evidence fits, but it’s weird, and I think the chance of it being right is slim. Anywho...:
I think the One Piece world may be a virtual world (like Sword Art Online, or to a lesser extent, the Matrix.) that the bulk of the players are unaware that they are in/playing. (A little more on that later **)
-Evidence-
* “The Voice of All Things” could be an ability, like Neo’s, to hear the programming of the system, and it’s individual programming of every object.
* Sword techniques, specifically the ability to cut things that should be impossible to cut and flying slashes, are a persons ability to use their will to alter the systems parameters of objects and physics. Like imagining a rock is as delicate and thin as a piece of paper with great will and concentration that it becomes so, and flying slashes are done by a person breaking the physics of the world (since a flying slash would be impossible in the real world.
* Haki (specifically hardening) is a persons ability to modify the physics of their avatar and whatever they have in contact with themselves through force of will. Kenbunshoku haki is a persons ability to access the movement data of the world near them by bypassing the “lag time” between something happening and the system processing that data and conferring it to the part of the system that manages the program’s physical representations of said information. (Think of it like the relatively recent Robocop movie, where they talk about his lag time between data being received and processed) conquerors haki is a persons ability to use their immense willpower to force other PC’s/NPC’s to “reboot”.
* Devil fruits are a computer virus (intentional to the system or not) that modifies the player’s avatar’s base code, and this virus is programmed to remain dormant in that players code until the player’s avatar is deleted from the system, after which the virus returns to an available storage location closest to the avatar’s death, to ensure its existence remains a part of the system.
* It would explain how drinking milk can restore broken/missing bones and teeth, just like a healing potion in a video game.
* Just like the milk thing, it would explain why certain things that blatantly break the laws of physics are able to occur. For example: the gura gura no mi’s ability to move water(and potentially land as well) in separate directions in concentric circles, as if it were a solid object.
* The living folks that have been to Raftel (I prefer not saying Laugh Tale because it sounds silly.
) Didn’t want to tell people what is at Raftel because it is a ‘Logout Station’ or potentially a way to complete the game. The average person would probably wouldn’t believe them because they would think they are insane, telling a bullshit story, or that they had never truly been to Raftel. And if they DID believe them they would have a very good chance of going insane themselves.
** The will of D would be the will of the developer, and don’t fear death because they know (Probably subconsciously) that they will just wake up outside of the game. The Celestial Dragons are players that cheated and rewrote the code, giving them astronomical levels of fear and loyalty, so that they could do pretty much anything they want. I think Im would be the leader of this group, or potentially the current game master, after having killed/removed the original game master (Also know as ‘The Developer’
)
These are just the examples I came up with off the top of my head. I’m sure there are many more.
DISCLAIMER!!
As I said before, I think the likelihood of this being true about the One Piece universe is ASTRONOMICALLY slim. This was more of a thought experiment for fun. I would love to hear people’s thoughts!
