Until then, a decent indicator might be if we got closer to figuring out Oni's stats. If they're significantly lower than Tanegashima's, then it would be more likely that he'd need Kijin in order to get a draw. On the other hand, if they're the same or higher, a boost provided by Kijin should be significant enough to push Oni past a draw.

Oni, greatest actor of POT

There are a few guys in POT known for their trickery and acting skills, but the true master of acting is Oni. Despite being the #1 player in his first year, he's managed to trick most of the U17 camp into thinking he's just some guy on court 5. Even the guys in the know obviously have no idea how good he is minus Byodouin and a handful of the top 10. Unlike the usual acting stuff, he not only fools his opponents but he also fools the reader. For example we're led to believe Nakagauchi was someone who could've played Oni straight up (yeah right), or that Kintarou sitting the net on fire is supposed to be pretty impressive, even though it'd later turn out that setting the net on fire is pretty much nothing compared to Kishin aura. Unlike most actors, Oni goes all the way to get his act to work, as he's completely willing to purposely lose games to keep the act going. After all, if he played anywhere remotely like his full power you'd never have anyone besides Byodouin that would challenge him. And even if he's playing just enough to win, there's no way he can keep this act going for 3 years if he always happened to win every game he plays against the normal guys of U17 camp.

I'm still betting at some point we'll see Tanegashima owned and then Oni will be like 'yeah his technique is weak' and then people will ask but isn't that the only guy he didn't beat and Oni will be like, "I never said that was over tennis."

Never really thought it out like you have. I think TnK!/KijinOni > Tanegashima.

I also noticed something strange. In Oni's game whenever he's going remotely serious you always see guys on the floor exhausted. But how is this possible? We know Oni doesn't try to hit anybody on purpose so it's not like people are exhausted from injuries. We're told that for example 10-ball Kintaro can't even react to his rallies. Heck, even TnK can't always react to how fast his shots are. So there shouldn't even be enough time for people to get tired playing Oni. You'd just hit the ball and see some smoke and then immediately lose a point. I guess he's purposely toning down his ability so that people can even rally with him to help them training, though it sure doesn't seem to work very well on anyone else besides the Kintaro.

Also, each time Kintaro played him he's always saying Oni better not be secretly holding back and Oni says of course not, but he's obviously blatantly lying! He's always holding wayyyyyy back compared to his true potential!

Hahahahaha I guess everyone Oni plays with is made to look strong but are completely fodder. Only explanation I can think of.

Only Byodoin managed to unlock most of Oni's potential. They were playing a life/death match, which Oni vs Kintaro wasn't. If Tokugawa/Irie played Oni, I don't think he'd hold back on them. Having a match with Oni/Byodoin is experience with top-class players, good for a future-pro.

I think the opponents just get so overwhelmed by Oni that they end up mentally crushed. Like, Kintarou's fire is said to have been extinguished or something iirc, as in, before going TnK it looks like he has no will to fight left.

Sure that's the explanation but Oni is so overwhelmingly powerful, you shouldn't even have time to get overwhelmed. For example normally we see a guy get overwhelmed trying to chase down a shot and not getting the ball on time. In Oni's case you might not even see him hitting a shot (people who are too weak can't even see him through the smoke). Certainly his shots aren't something you can even attempt to hit back when he's remotely serious for an average person in POT. It seems like as soon as you play this guy it's going to be 'no way I can even get a point' and you just go to a corner and cry. You can't even try to return his shots because they're beyond what a normal POT person can even react to, and sometimes not even be seen. The ref can't see his shots, and he's generally one of the person with the best reaction/perception in POT (e.g. he's never fooled by Yamato's technique, for example).

Well, it's true that they don't manage to even see the ball at times, but I'd be surprised if they weren't trying at least. So they put all their focus on that, and if you do that for long enough it'll burn you out too.
