Since the election arc, HxH has been a lot about intrigue and even politics.
The intrigue even took a bigger place in it than the fighting.
And a character exemplifying that change the most is Pariston Hill.

He is a villain of whom we do not know his physical capabilities yet (but he is implied to at least not be physically overpowered), but who is probably the scariest dude in the Manga right now.

Interestingly, there is not really a lot he PROVEABLY (or for us as readers, visibly) did that would really justify his reputation.
It is a common theme with Pariston that EVERYBODY arround him knows that he pulled a lot of vile shit, but that noone can quite put his finger on what he did exactly.

The sometimes confusing fantranslations and the trend in HxH to add more and bigger textbubbles don't help too, so this thread is supposed to keep track and pinpoint everything pariston allegedly did and make some theories about it

In this opening post, I will give short summaries of what pariston did when and some hypothesis to fill the blanks, too.
I will edit it out of course when someone can refute a theory or has another plausible one.

Fact: Becoming vice chairman

Netero made Pariston vice chairman because he felt like it'd be fun to be antagonized.
Netero explicitly said he finds Pariston interesting, even tho it is the kind of guy he hates the most.

Theory: Getting in contact with Beyond Netero and bringing the ant queen into the human world

It can hardly be a coincidence that Pariston joined Beyond's group so quickly after his arrival.
I think they teamed up at some point because Pariston thought he could mess with the chairman by using his son and Beyond wanted Pariston's help to get to the DC.
They couldn't be sure Netero would die (and arguably, Pariston didn't really want that to happen), but still there was a chance for it to happen and in any case, they would have bought time by having Netero hunt ants in an area in which he cannot communicate with the hunter's org well.
Mizai thinks Pariston is responsible for the death of a lot of hunters (or rather, them going missing), too.
That is not proven yet, but it'd make sense. After all, meeting up with beyond and messing with new world stuff is a thing that at least some hunters would notice. Pariston seemingly disposed of them (or used them to get things done which in turn was fatal for them).

Fact: Running for Chairman

We all read the arc. Pariston messed with all other zodiac in various ways to get more votes.
He tried to make absent voters lose their voting rights (stopped by cheadle).
He tried to become the vote conductor by lot (stopped by ging)

Then, (and this is a theory) the Seirin Group (bushidora, loupe and teradein) tried to get sympathy among voters by capturing illumi and hisoka (a plan that was suggested by Morel).
Their first wave of attack targetted Illumi's needlemen (which seemed to be succesful at first).
However, all three teams (of which one of them contained at least 20 people and the other at least 8) were killed by illumi or hisoka (8 corpses can be seen lying near hisoka, and bushidora said that the team illumi destroyed had 20 ppl in it).
However, after Bushidora is killed, Teradein prepares a video speech in which he talks about 8 pro hunters belonging to his group, 15 they hired and 99 temp hunters.

That must mean that there were temphunters among the ranks of the first team that attacked the needlemen already.
I am thourough about that because both Illumi and Hisoka found maps which they thought was a pretty big screw up by those teams. These maps allowed Illumi to adequately know which aircraft Killuah would take and some more information too.
Only having these information allowed Illumi to aid Hisoka (because he knew where kill would land, elseways he'd have had to chase after kills aircraft).
I am pretty sure that pariston is responsible for the maps just lying arround there, he used his temphunters so Teradein would have a harder time.
Then he got even more opportunity to screw them over when Teradein hired MORE temphunters.

Bushidora is a double star blacklist hunter. That does not mean he has to be OP, but him, some other pro hunters and over 50 temps should be more than just capable of not all dying to Hisoka and Illumi.
Usually people just think Bushidora is weak, but i don't think so.
I think that the temp hunters were given orders by pariston that, in a similar way to the maps, gave hisoka and illumi intel on where they would lie waiting for them, when someone would be where and so on.
And obviously he'd only send the weakest most incompetent bunch over there, there are quite many possibilities he could have screwed his own peopl over.
Pariston also said that they were easy to figure out, so Pariston probably exspected them to hire the temps and had all the time in the world to make this happen.
That is probably also why Hisoka could dispose of Teradein before he could announce the identity of Illumi and himself: Hisoka knew where he was and Pariston might have seen through there being no proper security (security which you'd exspect for an important guy like teradein).

Long story short: By hiring the temps, loupe wanted to get pariston voters killed or at least make them absent in one election.
What he archieve his the opposite: A lot of the pro seirin group faction (at least 25 people were killed, effectively disposing of that group of voters.
Even if Teradein hadn't been killed, he wouldn't have been in any shape to fight back after that.
Interestingly, Teradein said 99 temp hunters died, but the voting only had about 30 votes less than the previous.
Thus i am led to believe that Pariston sent them Temphunters who didnt have a licence yet or lost it, effectively making their plan useless and costing him nothing.

And this exemplifies Pariston very well: He couldn't know how competent Illumi and hisoka are, but he made it as easy for them as possible and he knew he'd lose absolutely nothing.
Even if Bushidora had been able to kill Illumi and Hisoka, a lot of the temps would have died in the ordeal, temps that couldn't vote for him but sure as hell this would have led to a bad light for the seirin group and he could have said things like 'oh yes, the seirin group used my loyal temp hunters who sacrificed for the organization and now want to abuse their fate'.
Pariston is cunning enough to follow up on any outcome of this sitaution, he was just lucky that he got even the very best one.

Fact: Becoming Chairman and stepping down:

Pariston said he thought he'd lose the election and still ran with it. He thought that because he saw no real sure opportunity to take the election away from Leorio if he had kept running.
The moment he knew he'd won was when he sensed that Gon's nencurse had been released (and he knew about gon's state because he tried to tease ging with it).

Pariston subsequently stepped down from being a chairman.
He gave cheadle a warning that, if she didn't build up an organization that is 'fun', he'd seriously mess with her.

Also Pariston got all the chimera ants that were leftover from transformation process the royal guards developed and controls them, to back up this thread.

______

This is not the end of it and I am going to keep this thread updated because Pariston's actions are sometimes so subtile (much like the mess with the maps and the temphunters i pointed out above. It wasn't clear to me what pariston actually did to warrant his 'they are so easy to figure out' when i read it the first time).
However, I need to reread the DC arc to adequately write about what he does in there (or allegedly does) and mb come up with theories.

Great summary and great choice of topic ^^ In fact I have a lot of things to discuss concerning Pariston, including his personality and his ambitions. Unfortunately right now I don't have time so I will contribute in the coming days :)

An interesting thing about pariston is that he seems to be upfront to the people who call out his bullshit.

At least he was up front to cheadle and ging.
To cheadle he in all seriousness told her his views about netero and threatened her when she asked him.
To ging he had an outburst about not wanting to talk about netero.

I think pariston is very serious about his games and, in some form or another, does give people who can play with him some respect.
He doesnt respect guys like loupe and teradein, but it is s th else with ging and cheadle.

I think he only talked seriously to cheadle because she surprised him.
It surprised pariston that cheadle would go as far as to give leorio her votes (which almost paid off if kill hadn't managed to save gon) and made him stop smiling, but i think at that moment he started respecting her.

Pariston as a hunter:

Pariston is a triple hunter. This means that he made an outstanding contribution to many different fields including his own, all the while having his disciples achieve great heights in their respective fields. Unfortunately, so far we don't have enough material to gauge up his strength, but nevertheless we can pretty much guess he's quite strong (and by that I mean at least Knov or Morel's level). Obviously he's not as strong as Ging (as the latter implied it himself), but he did complain that Ging is underestimating him too much. Another hint about his prowess is that he did belong to the twelve zodiacs which were hand-picked by Netero himself and the group was known to spar with Netero. Maybe that included Pariston as well.
Also we've seen him dodge nen bullets quite skillfully just as Ging did, eventhough that doesn't prove much.

Career:

As Shionoro stated, we already know that Pariston was chosen by the late chairman, Netero, to be vice-chairman (in addition to being member of the zodiac twelve) which is the second most important rank in the association. We also know that he was basically the leader in disguise of the temp hunters, who not only respect him but also follow his orders blindly. This can be explained by his facade of totally understanding the feelings of the "weak" together with his natural charisma.
However behind the scenes, he was secretly in contact with Beyond Netero and was sharpening his claws patiently in preparation of the expedition to the dark continent and was waiting for the right moment, i.e. Isaac Netero's death (but I'm not saying he wanted it to happen).
So the activities reflecting his real motives include gathering the appropriate team for the DC of pro hunters (disguised as temp-hunters), making sure there would be one person among the zodiacs on Beyond's side (Saiyuu), and of course hindering the chairman as much as possible.

Motivations and Personality:

At first during the election arc, it seemed natural that the right term to describe Pariston was "troll". To be more precise, he seemed as somebody wearing the "nice guy" persona, yet all he does is annoy and hinder his surrounding by using sarcastic or ironic statements, ponctuated with subtle insults and provocations hidden between the lines, while broadly grinning. To top it all, he was absolutely flawless in his game and was never shaken by the others' "comebacks" (Apart some of Ging), he even would deliberatly put himself in a disadvantage and still take the upper hand, as Cheadle hatefully admits. In short, at this point we can describe him as a deceiving manipulative passive agressive man.
We even got hints that he might be from the "dark side of society", as stated by Mizaistom, although he was never linked to any incident.

However at the end of the election arc, we got a glimpse of his real self when Cheadle confronted him as he just resigned from the chairman position, we see he just wants to play around with people around him, and was actually pretty sad with Netero's death.

Ging as well hints to this side of Pariston by stating that they were kinda similar, except that he gets quickly bored. And finally during the DC arc we understand that Pariston's pleasure in life is to keep himself entertained and inflict damage to the things he loves, with no brakes and no matter the consequences. Ging declares that Pariston crossed the safety line by far, especially with his plans involving the 5000 Chimeras.
His current plans involve accompanying Beyond to the dark continent against the association's will. Moreover he was ready to throw 5000 Chimeras in the world if the association did not respond to Beyond's provocation. However it's still unknown whether he has a hidden goal for going to the DC.

Pariston and Ging:

I think it is quite capital to understand the link between these two if we want to understand their personalities and motives, as they are kind of two sides of the same coin. And what better way to describe this enemity/rivalry between them than using their own quotes:

"Pariston isn't thinking about winning, he isn't thinking about losing either, that's why he's so powerful". Ging Freecs, chapter 331.

"He just wants to enjoy himself. He's like me and Netero, though I get easily bored." Ging Freecs, chapter 331.

"...You and I are similar, we think in unorthodox ways." Ging Freecs, chapter 343.

"This is annoying. We do think alike, is that why I don't like him ? " Pariston Hill, chapter 345.

"I can't let Pariston do as he pleases. What he wants is destruction disguised as perverted love." Ging Freecs, chapter 346.

"My disagreement with Pariston is a bit complicated..." Ging Freecs, chapter 347.

Theories about him and expectations:

Personally I reckon I do not need to speculate that far about him. I did say he enjoys messing around with others for his own entertainment, and I do think that's all he cares about in life (much like Ging, though Ging doesn't include others in his plans). So unless we know more about his back story and hidden toughts, I'm sticking with this idea that all he ever does is to aim for the craziest schemes to create challenges for himself and his "loved ones", which basically become his toys. Also to a certain degree, he does resemble Hisoka in the fact that he always needs some people to "have fun" with; for Hisoka it's through combat while for Pariston it's mainly extreme mind games.

I really would like to see more interactions between him and Ging, especially looking forward to see what he would do to someone "he hates". Will Pariston lose his cool and reveal the monster within ? Or will he manage the unthinkable and pull the ultimate prank, something that even Ging can't handle ?

If I missed something please do point it out, and of course don't hesitate to give your own opinions ^^.

Except that Pariston and Beyond did meet some time ago (or at least were under some kind of contact), maybe around the time Pariston became Vice-chairman. Hence this part of your post is not a theory, but a fact ^^
As for them bringing the Ant queen from the DC, I honestly don't see how they would've managed that as this whole mess is for them to get there in the first place.

I think pariston is very serious about his games and, in some form or another, does give people who can play with him some respect.
He doesnt respect guys like loupe and teradein, but it is s th else with ging and cheadle.
Yeah, I totally agree with you there. And of course his ultimate rival in this category is Ging. In chapter 342's last page, we can see him in jubilation of the fact that Ging finally decided to confront him directly and thus, "play" with him.

I think Ging was provoking him there when he said he could easily just kill him. I do think that Ging would have been overpowered by Pariston and the rest of the group if he were to fight pariston there and then.
I do think that ging is stronger because he seems to be more into fighting than pariston is, however, i cannot imagine pariston ever giving him the chance for a proper 1n1 battle, simply because he is not seeking it.
However, i would not take everything they say towards each other at facevalue.
I couldn't imagine pariston going to kill gon even if ging had reacted in another way. That threat was to see how ging would react and i'd see ging's provocation towwards pariston as something along those lines.

It is interesting that pariston became a 3 star hunter. Ging could easily be one (it has been stated by biscuit afaik) but he was not interested in it a lot He only took kite as pupil and thus never got his third star (because kite was not accomplished yet).
It is interesting pariston obviously took pupils at one time and had accomplishments other than messing with people.
I could see cutie beauty be a disciple of him (and possibly sheila from the kurapika oneshot).

I have a longtime theory that pariston will manage to defeat ging and be defeated by cheadle, i feel like the humilation she received in the election arc built h

er up to be a capable enemy of pariston later down the road.
Howver, yes, it will be interesting to see what pariston does. Togashi likes to have deconstructions, so we might very well see that the solution is that cheadle keeps the organization so interesting that pariston becomes her ally and doesn't bother anyone anymore.

However, before all that, there has to be a big game between ging and pariston, and it will be interesting to see what whoever wins will do.
Ging doesn't seem like the kind of guy who'd kill pariston off and Pariston doesn't seem to be the kind of guy who kills someone who is fun to him either (at least not on purpose, he gives them deadly challenges, but pariston was legitimately sad when netero died).
As for them bringing the Ant queen from the DC, I honestly don't see how they would've managed that as this whole mess is for them to get there in the first place.
I couldn't figure that out yet either, but as a vice chairman pariston could have influence on the border control.
We know cheadle has cnotact and information from them as chairman, so pariston might be able to at least get contact towards the DC and to whoever lives there.
Or it was something connected to beyond's last voyage to the DC, possibly a tribe of ants was already on the new continent (the fake one most of the ship people will go to) when it was isolated. If Beyond knew that this was the case but didn't feel like killing the ants there off, pariston might have seen through getting a queen to the mainland.

It didn't feel like a provocation, it was more a reminder of facts. Ging wants to beat Pariston in his own game, so he clearly states that if Pariston were just a muscle-head the matter would've been simpler as Ging would just beat him to a pulp (here he is implying that he's stronger physically, and Pariston doesn't deny it). However, for Pariston to admit defeat, it has to be through his "games". I think when Ging said this, he was confirming that he will play along Pariston's rules, and still beat him. (And just to say my opinion on this, but I also strongly believe that even Ging couldn't take on all those hunters at once, and he is not stupid to try it).

However I don't recall Pariston ever threatning to kill Gon. It was only once that Pariston tried to provoke Ging by implying that Gon was surely going to die when he was in coma.

It is interesting that pariston became a 3 star hunter. Ging could easily be one (it has been stated by biscuit afaik) but he was not interested in it a lot He only took kite as pupil and thus never got his third star (because kite was not accomplished yet).

Yeah me too I could definitely see cutie as one of his disciples ^^. But just a small rectification on how to obtain the stars:
  1. Achiving something remarkable in one's own field ----> 1 Star.
  2. Having 1 star and having one's disciple get 1 star as well ----> 2 Stars.
  3. Having 2 stars and achieving remarkable feats in multiple fields ----> 3 Stars.
Therefore, in order for Ging to receive his third star he needs to fulfill condition (3), but not increase the number of his pupils (since he already had them receive 1 star for him to be a double hunter. So yup, we may conclude that Kaito was also a star hunter based on this ^^).

But yes, I too think it's impressive that Pariston already has 3 stars !

However, before all that, there has to be a big game between ging and pariston, and it will be interesting to see what whoever wins will do.

I really don't think your first hypothesis can be true, simply because if Pariston really did have such contact towards the DC, he would be using it to get them there right now. Look at all the mess and preparations he and Beyond had to go through just to get their "authorization" from the V5 (and they still need "qualifications", "means" and "contract" ! ), hence if Pariston had some kind of contact in the DC, all they would've needed were the means to get there, but Kakin kindly provides that. They actually needed V5 to negotiate with the "guide" and let them in using the safest route (at least this is how I understand it).

However your second statement could be true, but then again we know Beyond's last trip to the DC happened a long time ago, whereas the chimera ant queen looked to have just arrived from the DC just recently. If she has been brought by Beyond, she would have started preparing for the king's birth way before Gon was even born, unless she was held captive somewhere.

I took Pariston's words 'maybe i should pay Gon a visit?' as a form of threat. But you are right it could be a just an excuse to bring up the topic.

About Pariston and Ging: I would agree that Ging is stronger than Pariston, even if I think he does boast a little there, because when they got attacked, Pariston was not worried at all about some random nenusers (even tho ppl in hxh are usually rather on edge even against random strangers).

I wonder whether pariston has a hatsu that even enable him to fight physically. He might aswell have an ability like biscuits that isn't suited for battle (biscuit obviously is battle ready, just talking about her hatsu).

Yeah me too I could definitely see cutie as one of his disciples ^^. But just a small rectification on how to obtain the stars:

Oh thank you, I didn't know that there was an order of progression with the stars.
I am always a bit careful with things from databooks tho, they sometimes conflict with canon later down the road even if the author was involved in them.
This would also mean that either knuckle or Shoot are one star hunters now, too, because morel got awarded two stars for the CA arc.
Yes I agree. Pariston on the other hand may still surprise us, as to when he truly knows what to do with someone he truly hates.
After reading the part where ging and pariston meet in beyond's headquarter again, I feel like Pariston sees Ging as some kind of older brother and ging sees him as younger brother who is out of control since daddy netero died.
When Ging got to the headquarter, pariston didnt smile. He looked ready to battle and thinking about what ging might want (noticeably, pariston didnt seem afraid but he seemed tensed

On the next page, Ging stated his intent to play the game with Pariston. Pariston then started smiling instantly, being really happy and saying 'I thought you came in order to stop me'.

Their whole interaction really seems like a gentlemen's agreement. When ging wanted to bring up Netero, Pariston instantly interfered and ging respected that Pariston does not want to talk about it.
In a way, it almost seemed like they bonded a bit in a twisted way.
Exspecially when Ging asked Pariston whether he didn't have enough toys already and told him he'd be actually fine with Pariston dealing the deathblow to the organization if Cheadle couldn't keep it together.
Ging just wanted him to not use the Chimeras at his disposal and other actually crazily scary things he is about to do.

I don't think she was held captive, i think she was the last of a possibly long line of ants who lived on the new continent.
If there were no humans, they just eat other creatures and never evolved to be as insanely strong as the ants we know. They were comparable to the ants before they discovered nen, the fish and ox creatures and they lived without disturbance there after they someone got to that place due to beyond's actions.
Beyond didn't seem like the kind of guy who'd kill them off for his mistake, but Pariston might not be as mercyful.
He needed the ant queen and he needed (potentially at that point) the new continent to be antfree before the black whale arrives there.

That would be my working hypothesis right now.

Don't worry though, that was taken from the manga, so it's as cannon as it can get ^^ (chapter 331, the part about the ten commandments). And yes, I also think that all the participants of the chimera ants hunt were awarded one star (yup Gon and Killua as well), which should automatically give Morel his second star (since his disciple got one). And since Morel was argualy one of the veterans who contriuted the most on the battle field, he could've been given a third star as well, but its award was still not officially confirmed :

Nevertheless, I still strongly support the idea that all of them got a star for their achievement.

True, they seem like they have a story. But you know, about their dialogue on chapter 343 I would really suggest reading the official viz translation, or the one figuring in the volume that just came out. I admit that I was confused when we had just the fans translation at our hands (which is decent ofc but at times tends to diverge a bit from the intended meaning). For instance, Ging never said he'd be fine with Pariston dealing the deathblow to the organization if Cheadle made it boring, he was actually against it. It's one of the reasons he was there to stop Pariston in the first place. Here, please compare the mangapanda version with the official one; the differences are very few, but capital as they could change the intended meaning :

I don't know man, the ant queen living in the new continent seems a possibility, but still unlikely to me. What I still find hard to believe is how they could've fetched her from there in the first place, I mean even if it is just the "new continent" we're talking about, it is still a mess just to get there. Also, supposing Pariston went there by some crazy means, he would ofc make sure there won't be any records of it, but Ging would find it out just as he did for the airships which took the chimera cocoons, and would thus mention it.

By the way, if we compare Pariston with other villains like Hisoka or Illumi, or even Jairo, personally I feel like he's the most original out of all of them. He is still very similar to Hisoka, in the sense that they need to "interact" and mess with people to achieve their goals, and thus their happiness. But what do you guys think ? How does Pariston compare with other (your favourite) villains?

Pariston said that he was not even trying to hide those chimera ants and even then ging only found out due to having mechanics as friends.
If Pariston is able to let people go missing without guys like Miazi being able to find them, he is good enough at that game to do something like that imo.
Maybe he distracted ging with something else, or ging was doing some other stuff. I mean, ging doesnt seem like the kind of guy to really keep close tabs on pariston until recently.
If beyond went to the DC before, i am sure he knows a more effective mean of getting there than a huge boatride. We know that netero, linell and zzyg went there as trio a long time ago, so i would suppose you do not need something like the black whale to get there.
Also, other kinds of travellers went there, even nonnenusers, and that leads me to believe that there are ways for nonoverpowered people to get at least to the new world without making too much noise.
The real challenge is probably the gatekeeper.

The thing about him as that he is like a child but also insanely intelligent and cunning.
I didnt see a char like that yet.
You often see childish and overpowered, but pariston is actually savvy of the world arround him.
He is also not sherlock holmes, so no genius with antisocial streak. Vice versa, he is a genius who can easily influence people by his charme.
Only his hidden side is childish AND dark/twisted.

With a guy like hisoka, you know what you get when you see him one second. He is a killer. But pariston is another breed.

All the other villains in HxH knew or found their place in life.
Hisoka does what he loves, chrollo is a fullblown criminal who deals with the death of a friend my just calmly responding with violence (not a tantrum), genthru is a criminal too and found his place among his two mates, meruem in the end found his place too and if not for komugi he woulda found his place as king.

But Pariston doesnt seem to have found it. When hisoka kills chrollo off, he is not going to cry about it. He will simply search for someone stronger and if he cannot find such a guy, maybe he'd even go as far as to train one.
Pariston gets legitimately upset if his playbuddies die and he feels alone without one.
He also seemingly never had someone really getting under his skin until ging arrives.
Pariston is unrestrained in his deeds.

Guys like the villains mentioned above at some point found stability. Genthru and chrollo will just do their crimes, hisoka will do his killing and even meruem wanted to go for stability as in 'giving humans a reservate' and stuff like that. They could be dealt with and reasoned with to an extent.

Pariston cannot be reasoned with as it seems. He has no problem with destroying the whole world by messing with the DC and bringing in his ant army. Just like that without a good reason. And that's scary.

Thx for the information (about the stars, too)!
Sadly the manga chaps take forever to come out in germany. The latest tankubon will come out in OCTOBER of this year, it is really sad.
I know i could sign up for the viz translations, but since i am buying them anyway i feel reluctant there.

Yes I also think his twisted side of trying to inflict pain to the things he loves and play with them is somehow like that of a spoiled kid, pushed to the extremes ofc (even his design and expressions make him look like an overgrown baby, in a cute way ^^).
But when we look at it from a more general stand point, we find it's just a form "selfishness", which is shared by many other hunters, including Ging and Gon. But like we've discussed before, some hunters know when to stop to not hurt others (significantly let's say), while others have no breaks, and we agree that Pariston is in the latter category ^^

Well I wouldn't describe Hisoka as just a killer, but more as a fighter. As you know, his objectif in life is to fight the strongest of opponents, and his greatest pleasure _to the point of climax_ is when he kills them.

You're saying that Hisoka found his stability, in the sense that he knows exactly what he wants and that's what he concentrates on (did I interprete it correctly ?). If this is what you mean by stability, then I would say the same goes for Pariston; He knows perfectly that his pleasure in life is to "play" with his loved ones, i.e. mess with them, hinder them, and even break them. And he's concentrating on that just like the other villains concentrate on their objectives. Hence Pariston did find his placein life, and this realization constitutes his strength, otherwise he would be confused as to what's his existential purpose, and that weakness could've costed him a long time ago, especially when all his enemies are people like Ging or Cheadle.

Also the part about him crying for the chairman's death just showcases his twisted form of love (nothing to do with what you refer to as stability). To me it just emphasizes his childlike innocence, which goes hand in hand with his dark side. And hence the Pariston paradox :)

I absolutely agree ! Pariston stands out as really unrestrained (I'm glad you used that term, fits him perfectly), and I'm sure no one can reason with him, and that's his real threat (arguably Jairo could turn out to be this way as well). The only way to stop him is to make him admit defeat.

I think the difference between Hisoka and Pariston in that department is that Hisoka knows what 'to do' with everyone he encounters.
Pariston plays with people, yes, but for me it doesn't seem like he has found his place yet.
I couldn't imagine Hisoka thinking about 'what to do with someone', but rather 'how'.
Hisoka contemplates how he will proceed to make people he finds interesting fight him. But Hisoka would never think about 'oh well that Gon is a nice fella actually maybe i should just be friends with him'.
But Pariston could have quite some character developement due to ging, a little like meruem had developement due to komugi.
I do not see any character developement for hisoka. The most shocking change he ever had was goign after the spider, and that is well in character (after all, it is seemingly the first time he really lost a fight. that is SOME developement, but nothing out of things you could exspect).

I think it is quite instable to try to kill someone for a long time (and I think after seeing how Pariston 'plays' with people, we can conclude that he set up potentially deadly traps for netero) and then be upset about his death.
I think Pariston is not only childlike in his whims, but also, like a child, he annoys others to get a raection out of them.
I wouldn't compare him to hisoka here. Hisoka wants to wait until one particular person is strong enough to give him a thrill.
But Pariston messes with ordinary people, no matter whether they even provide a challenge for him.
To me, Netero is like a father figure to him, one who could finally restrain him a bit and i think that this is actually what pariston searches for, not just the trolling.

I hope everything's gonna be fine for you ! And feel free to take your time of course ^^ (as long as it's not a 2 years hiatus o_O)

Now I understand exactly the reason why you're mentioning this "stability". And you are right when you say Hisoka knows what to do with everybody he encounters; if the person has potential he keeps an eye on them, if they are strong he needs to fight them to the death, and if they are in neither of the mentioned categories he just plainly ignores them (or kill them if they get in his way). In Hisoka's case the algorithm is quite clear.
For Pariston, A priori, he also knows what to do with people he likes. However when it comes to Ging, apparently for the first time in his life he feels annoyed that there is somebody with identical intelligence and train of thoughts "playing" with him, and moreover who isn't annoyed by his mischief.
To me this meant that Pariston never in his life encountered somebody who could match his insanity, and apparently he never even considered it possible. So IMO only for such persons he had no idea how to react to.
This also shows that Pariston is somewhat quite arrogant, as he couldn't stand that there is somebody practically reading his mind and handling his stratagems like they were nothing. I'm sure he wasn't aware Ging was so similar to him, since in the beginning of their encounter (in the DC arc) Pariston was smiling broadly and happily at the tought of Ging finally paying him direct attention.

I agree with your statement, as I also think the same. However I remind you that when I compared Hisoka and Pariston, I said they were similar in the fact they need other people to achieve their objectives. I didn't say they handled them the same though. Of course the other villains also need interactions with other people, but not as much as the jester and the troll.

Why do you think Pariston wasn't sure of that?
I feel like his comment about 'trusting Ging as an enemy' was a way of acknowledging ging being equal to him.
Or do you mean that he wasn't aware that ging like to play these games, too?

Yes I agree with that, they both seek out people they can mess with.
Tho i'd think that a guy like pariston can be just as happy/unhappy (because i am not sure whether he is happy right now) by just messing with the hunter's organization WITHOUT AN EQUAL OPPONENT, while Hisoka needs someone who has a shot at defeating him.

I think the search of Hisoka is a lot more focussed. Pariston just does things on a whim.
His thing is creating environments he finds interesting, which affects a lot of people.
Hisoka goes for persons, i think pariston goes for trouble affecting groups of people.

Because before the DC arc Ging and Pariston probably never confronted and opposed each other seriously. This can be inferred from their dialogue upon their encounter in the DC arc; Pariston saying : "Finally, you're gonna play with me..." is an example. Also remember that during the election arc the two of them had very few interactions, and quite frankly to me they even felt like they were trying to avoid direct confrontations with each other.

Hence prior to the DC arc, I guess Pariston and Ging had only shallow confrontations and minimal interactions with each other, but still enough to gauge up each other's level and nature. Thus at that time, Pariston was acknowledging that Ging was more or less on the same frequency as him, but never did he imagine they would actually have identical train of thoughts, and that moreover Ging would be one step ahead of him in their game. And this only became apparent in the DC arc.

That's an interesting thought and makes sense.
They probably did have some interaction via the zodiac so they knew what kind of guy each other is roughly.

Maybe it was also Pariston being preoccupied with Netero.
If Pariston focussed on playing with Netero, he would not get too out of hand for anyone else, because it seems like Netero usually won or at least stalemated him.

So far, tbh, i cannot even REALLY picture Pariston as a villain because he...Kinda would have already won if he was one.
He was chariman of the hunter's org and he could have pulled through with his plans far more easy like that.
The whole thing about cheadle surpressing beyond would not have taken place. He would have had opposition in ging and mb the zodiac leaving the org with a lot of other highranking hunters, but he would still have a huge advantage.
He didn't do that because...well, why?
Did he want to give himself a challenge? Did he care for the organization and wanted to give cheadle a second chance to reform it because he wouldnt be able to do it (after all, he can destroy, but seemingly not build up).
In any case, i don't see him like hisoka here. It is not about hoping the org will give him a challenge i think.
I think it is more along the lines of him hoping the org will be a playground for him once again and killing it off if it wont be one, more out of mercy than out of hate.

Yeah that's also what I think, both Pariston and Ging were ocupied with their own stuff at that time and didn't pay attention to each other.

I guess in his situation being the influencial number 2 is better for his games, like he can come up with his plans from the shadows at ease while still enjoying the priviledges of a higher position.

By the way is it safe to assume that Pariston is currently in the 3rd/4th deck of the black whale ? Along with Ging and the rest. I wonder how they would proceed to get on board Morel's ship once they reach the new continent / relay point ?

Hmm, that is an interesting question.
I think Pariston might want to be in the highest 2 decks to be able to directly influence matters regarding beyond.
On the other hand, it would maybe be better for him if he was nowhere near that place so noone can make claims against him, beyond and beyond's group.
Pariston might want to stir trouble at the lower decks so the zodiac are busy except the few who guard beyond netero.
If really one of the people guarding beyond is pariston's mole, he'd have a good chance of beyond escaping.

I am not sure that pariston will be on morel's ship.
They are using knov and the other new character to transport people and i would think that pariston might use a means like that to travel there.

Sure he would love it, but I don't think he has access to the 2nd or 1st decks. I guess only the zodiacs and hunters cheadle "allowed" in, plus the hunters serving as bodyguards (including some of Pariston's followers, like Bill). Hence I'm sure that the hunters not picked by Cheadle for the voyage have no choice but to get on board the 3rd/4th deck as normal civilians. This would apply in particular to Pariston, as it doesn't make sense to allow him in 1st deck, where Beyond's cell is. Also I like your idea that he might be one to stir some chaos to give the zodiacs more trouble, in fact he might even be reponsible for the current mess they have there.

As to per when they arrive to the new continent, if everything goes as planned, Saiyuu should be arrested, Kurapika more or less having delt with Tserriednich and helped Oito escape. All which will remain is to use Knov to transport everybody to Morel's ship.

Therefore I think I can answer my own question by saying that Pariston and the rest also would have their own ship, my gut feeling tells me it's gonna be Popeye_Err I mean Usamen_'s ability, and that he'll be their navigator.

At first i thought it were the spiders who stirred trouble and kakin's poor conditions, but after your advice with the VIZ translations (thx again :) ) the translation i read did not point to the spiders like the fantranslation i read (about forged tickets).
What i found most remarkable was that kurapika wasn't sure whether pariston actually knows about the succession war.
3 of Kurapika's cobodyguards, including bill, didn't know about it and never met the queen.
Now, the question is why Pariston would hire them in the first place. While it is possible that Pariston does not know about it (after all, pariston does not know everything, even if it sometimes seems otherwise^^), I think the fact that he hired them confirms that he knew there was something going on with the princes.
There would usually not be any reason to care for him, but that makes me think that Pariston's master plan to get beyond out (even tho he said beyond would find his own way out, that can aswell be a lie to fool ging) is connected to the Kakin battle.
It is a move in Pariston's toolbox to send out his pawns without the proper information and equipment to get his way (he did the same with the map situation and the temphunters joining teradein and bushidora).
Maybe it is simply to lower the younger princes defenses by giving each of them at least some illprepared bodyguards.
For Oito, the only bodyguard who actually could evaluate the nenbeast situation well was kurapika and he was only there because of his own situation.
Without kurapika, Oito's chances of survival would have been close to zero because Bill, no matter how competent he is, couldn't know what exactly was going on.
Pariston could have a common plan with one of the higher princes that includes stirring enough trouble to keep the zodiac busy, creating chaos on the first 2 floors so that at least one of beyond's guards will go help and then Beyond can be released.
Therefore I think I can answer my own question by saying that Pariston and the rest also would have their own ship, my gut feeling tells me it's gonna be Popeye_Err I mean Usamen_'s ability, and that he'll be their navigator.
That might very well be, after all, ging said that the group consists out of specialists and the journey was prepared since a long time, i can see that being true.

Also, I had a thought about pariston's hatsu: What if the sparkles are actually his hatsu?
And nothing else.
Pariston is the only guy i could see deliberately creating a hatsu that has no purpose except to sparkle and mess with people.
I wish he was there in the zodiac meeting where they told their powers and went like 'I'm shiny :)'

Another thing coming to mind when rereading was that pariston and ging are polar opposites in their approaches.

Pariston operates by deceiving everyone who supports him and making everyone hate him who opposes him.
The first thing ging did when he joined beyond's group was trying to get their acceptance.

Pariston understands people and uses that understanding to get under their skin like a bloodhound.
Ging understands people and tries to do what it takes to make them his friends.

I've been thinking about his Chimera Ants hybrids. I could see him releasing some on the Black Whale to cause havoc.
