At this point, one thing has become pretty clear: People will die in One Piece. We had deaths almost every second arc since the skip. Vergo and Monet, Bobbin, Jigra, Du Feld (?) King Baum, Pedro and Pound, maybe Opera (he was likely revived with his Soul's leftovers, though) and now Absalom. The difference with all the former ones is that Absalom is not a new character.
Granted, Absalom is one of the most detestable characters in the Series. He was about to rape Nami in the bathroom, that alone speaks for itself. Still, Oda has broken a wall with his death. Now no one is safe anymore, except the SHs and most likely their inner circle like Vivi or Momo, too. Better prepare to say goodbye to some of your favorite characters.
For me, this also confirms something I've been thinking for a long time: All the fake deaths (Pell, Pagaya, Hogback, etc.) and all the miraculous survivals (ex. all the people Enel roasted) in Pre-Skip One Piece existed only for a single purpose: To fool the readers that Ace will be saved. It worked incredibly well.
