Yes, I suppose "eskwela" did come from "escuela"; I'm pretty sure it is also pronounced the same way. Filipino borrowed a lot of Spanish words then changed the spelling to make it look more Filipino (spelling is based on how it is pronounced).

There's no real way of saying hi in tagalog right? Kumusta ka is more like "how are you".

Dragonzair that is quite true... our usual subsitute word for Hi and Hello is kumusta ...

however we also use the word "huy" or "uy" as a form of Hi and Hello.

Here's some Filipino phrases... on love *sigh*

Mahal ko siya - I love him/her
Mahal na mahal ko siya - I really love him/her (or even... really, really love...)
Gusto ko siya - I like him/her
Gustong-gusto ko siya - I really like him/her (or even... really, really like...)

For those who understand Filipino or Tagalog... let's just have fun and translate this sentence in english...

"Pang-ilang presidente na ba ng bansang Republika ng Pilipinas si Ginang Gloria Macapagal Arroyo?

"What is the ordinal number of Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in terms of being the President of the Republic of the Philippines?"

this is the closest translation that we can muster out of the english language (i think) simply because "Pang-ilan" doesn't really have a literal meaning in English.

kung titignan nyo peepz, kung tatanungin ka ng tagalog ang isasagot mo ay "pang labingapat" or 14th in english. kung yung english version ko kuno, 14th din ang isasagot mo. so technically, na-translate ko na (din sa wakas!!!) ang matagal na na palaisipang ito! nyahahaha!

tagalog is no longer the official medium in schools. It was changed to english. It is said that 1987 law was made by left wing/communist symphatizers allied with the former Aquino administration. We bisaya's dont really mind, we dont like tagalog.

i believe that the medium that should be used for teaching is not english. it should be the national language. or for visayans or other major dialects, the medium should be the dialect itself. why? bakit?

here is an example. in algebra, if you would explain the meaning of x+x=2x (x plus x is equal to two x's) to a kid who had no backgound whatsoever with algebra, the kid would not be able to get that in an instant. let's say you translate it to tagalog:

"isang X dagdagan mo ng isa pang X ay (naturalmente) dalawang X"

parang: "isang laruan, dagdagan mo ng isa pang laruan ay dalawang laruan"

it REALLY is easier to understand something when it is explained in the native language/dialect.

so paano naman dun sa mga words na walang literal meaning ng tagalog or any other major dialects? like for example calculator? hindi mo naman pwedeng sabihin na "talapindutan" kasi walang makakaintindi nun. e di dito na papasok ang English as a SECOND language.

and i believe there was a test that was done in UP Diliman (i think) regarding the medium of language to be used in teaching subjects most especially to high school students. in their study, they made two classes: one who uses English as the medium of teaching and the other Filipino. after two weeks or so, they had an assessment in mathematics. Lo and behold! the guys who encountered filipino as the medium got higher marks than those guys taught with english.

perhaps, it's just me, but i really find it RELATIVELY easy to understand mathematical problems when translated to tagalog.
