Re: Filipino/Tagalog Language

Bad ryk! :Itachi Hubo't hubad has greater impact

Yes, I suppose "eskwela" did come from "escuela"; I'm pretty sure it is also pronounced the same way. Filipino borrowed a lot of Spanish words then changed the spelling to make it look more Filipino (spelling is based on how it is pronounced).

And may I add this info for non-Filipino users: (From the Philippine Embassy in the USA)

  • More than 80 indigenous languages and dialects are spoken in the Philippines. (others says its 160+ ... excluding slang, street and gay talk)
  • These languages and dialects belong to the Malayo-Polynesian group of the Austronesian language family. (Closely related to Bahasa)
  • The most widely spoken are Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilocano, Hiligaynon, Bicol, Waray-Waray, Pampangan, Pangasinan, and Maranao.
  • English and Filipino (formerly spelled Pilipino) are the official languages.
  • Filipino is largely based on Tagalog, with many words adopted from other languages, including English and Spanish.
  • It was made the national language in 1987 in an attempt to address the fact that no two of the indigenous languages are mutually comprehensible. Filipino is a required subject in schools, but English is more commonly used in higher education.
  • English is also commonly used in government and commerce.
  • Some Filipinos are trilingual, speaking an indigenous language, Filipino, and English.
  • Many Filipinos continue to primarily speak their indigenous language, rather than Filipino.
  • Very few people speak Spanish, despite the country’s colonial history. (Although a lot of words in Filipino are Spanish in origin)
  • Spanish never became a widely used or learned language in the Philippines, in contrast to the Spanish colonies in the Americas, because the Spanish friars used the vernacular to introduce Catholicism to the indigenous population. (There are some parts in the country whose people speaks pidgin Spanish, known as Chavacano - Cavite City | Ternate, Cavite | and Zamboanga City)
  • Arabic and various dialects of Chinese are spoken by a small minority of the population.(Mostly Fukien from Fujian Province of China - about 90% of the Chinese in the country, Mandarin - taught in Chinese Schools, Taiwanese and Cantonese)

* greens - I added...

Re: Filipino/Tagalog Language

:D napakasaya naman ng mga napag-uusapan dito. :D

and here i thought that all the things that i could get here is anything about one piece. tapos meron pala ditong mga thread na pang pinoy talaga.

anyway, about dun sa:

For those who understand Filipino or Tagalog... let's just have fun and translate this sentence in english... :p

"Pang-ilang presidente na ba ng bansang Republika ng Pilipinas si Ginang Gloria Macapagal Arroyo?
"What is the ordinal number of Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in terms of being the President of the Republic of the Philippines?"

this is the closest translation that we can muster out of the english language (i think) simply because "Pang-ilan" doesn't really have a literal meaning in English.

kung titignan nyo peepz, kung tatanungin ka ng tagalog ang isasagot mo ay "pang labingapat" or 14th in english. kung yung english version ko kuno, 14th din ang isasagot mo. so technically, na-translate ko na (din sa wakas!!!) ang matagal na na palaisipang ito! nyahahaha!

tagalog is no longer the official medium in schools. It was changed to english. It is said that 1987 law was made by left wing/communist symphatizers allied with the former Aquino administration. We bisaya's dont really mind, we dont like tagalog.

i believe that the medium that should be used for teaching is not english. it should be the national language. or for visayans or other major dialects, the medium should be the dialect itself. why? bakit?

here is an example. in algebra, if you would explain the meaning of x+x=2x (x plus x is equal to two x's) to a kid who had no backgound whatsoever with algebra, the kid would not be able to get that in an instant. let's say you translate it to tagalog:

"isang X dagdagan mo ng isa pang X ay (naturalmente) dalawang X"

parang: "isang laruan, dagdagan mo ng isa pang laruan ay dalawang laruan"

it REALLY is easier to understand something when it is explained in the native language/dialect.

so paano naman dun sa mga words na walang literal meaning ng tagalog or any other major dialects? like for example calculator? hindi mo naman pwedeng sabihin na "talapindutan" kasi walang makakaintindi nun. e di dito na papasok ang English as a SECOND language.

and i believe there was a test that was done in UP Diliman (i think) regarding the medium of language to be used in teaching subjects most especially to high school students. in their study, they made two classes: one who uses English as the medium of teaching and the other Filipino. after two weeks or so, they had an assessment in mathematics. Lo and behold! the guys who encountered filipino as the medium got higher marks than those guys taught with english.

perhaps, it's just me, but i really find it RELATIVELY easy to understand mathematical problems when translated to tagalog. :XD
