We have some prog bands in the phils... the early days of The Dawn was prog, we also have Eternal Now, but i think they're gone now...

Uhm...no... Pink Floyd is more on the psychidelic rock side than it is prog, Mars Volta is just like the flaming lips, pavement, and mogwai... not prog, but almost there.. I'm speaking form a musician's and rock purist's standpoint.

cmon.... pink floyd was indeed psychedelic before, but listen to the dark side of the moon, or wish you were here, there's no trace of psychedelia on those albums, and they're usually one of the finest pieces of progressive rock... you usually label bands progressive when they're concept-driven, irregular beats and incorporating so many genres at once... see you can't label bands progressive on just the songs, you have to listen to the whole album. try listening to the mars volta's 1st and 2nd albums, it'll blow your mind

I've lost my zest for life lately... not playing any video games, not watching much anime, not reading much of anything, not watching much movies or TV, and i've just managed to turn myself off to the girl i like... i'm also not writing much of anything either... i'm just waiting for the semester to end, and yet i still don't know what i'm gonna be doing during the sem break..

@Yonie- Uh... The only reason to why they did that in Pink Floyd was because David Gilmore was stoned 24/7 and wanted people to "hear" what he experienced while high... Mars Volta can be considered as quasi-prog, but not prog in it's full/pure/best form (e.g. Yes, King Crimson, Rush, Deep Purple, Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, etc...) Calling Pink Floyd a true prog band is like calling The Doors a real prog band, it's psychidelic rock.

cmon man.... it's been almost 40 years now that pink floyd has been labeled prog, you could read thru every music history timeline and pink floyd is still prog, how is dark side of the moon not prog? see this is the problem with prog-rock, it's the most debatable topic in any genre, and the bands themselves hate being labeled prog-rock

if you take things from the view of a consumer, then i'd understand why you'd think that they're prog. but if you become more critical, you'll see that classifying them as psychidelic rock would be the right thing to do. Psychidelic rock and prog are closely related, and sound the same for most of the time, but the difference is that prog is more on the technical side, involving mastery of instruments. Psych rock is more on "feel" and "does it sound right" notions. Of course this is all just IMO. most of the other people i've talked to consider them more on the psychidelic side though... since thats what they're known for, and it's what they're best at.

i get what you're saying. when you compare for example king crimson and pink floyd, crimson is kinda more dark and epic, pink floyd is more space rock-ish, more psychedelic. that's why prog-rock is so debatable. any article about the history of prog-rock, it's always pink floyd, king crimson, genesis, and yes. prog-rock can take on psychedelic, blues, jazz, and for example mars volta, latin music, dream theatre is metal prog, etc. it's hard to describe really. but i do know how to tell art rock like mogwai from prog, there's a big difference. prog-rock for me is encompassing several genres, or molding rock into more progressive stances like classical, blues, jazz, or latin etc

In a classic sense, yes prog is definately the mooshed up bastard child of several genreas. but you also have to take the delivery and progression into perspective, after all it is called prog. I still find it hard to consider mars volta prog (depending on the album, i'll consider pink floyd). they're in the same category as the killers, muse, wolfmother, and other semi-prog/ quasi-prog bands out there. like i've said in the past, they're prog-ish, but they're not quite there yet...

when you put mars volta along with the likes of muse or later radiohead then yeah, you can say that they're almost identical. but among the three mars volta is already prog for me, mainly because unlike muse or radiohead, they dont record the sound they make, they make it themselves, look at their wide lineup, percussions and winds, synthesizers, etc... mars volta rarely uses sounds not made by themselves

Muse actually uses a keyboard to make the weird effects they use. I havent gotten into mars volta, mainly because the chances of them being inconsistent is very high. having only 2 members means hiring sessionists for live shows, meaning a large margin for error. i'm a fan of creativity and skill, but consistency is very important for me as well.

kala ko bunigay na talaga, spent 8 hours trying to fix the problem - one of windows' OS drivers won't load. paulit-ulit lang na boot-reboot. i nearly resorted to reformatting my drives. CRAP!

maglilipat na ako ng "importanteng" files sa laptop ko. di bale nang mawala ung games, wag lang ung doujins, scandals, h-anime, school homeworks, saved emails...

well i've backed up the games yesterday... didn't know something strange will happen to my pc.

and on a creepy note, i left my laptop on at the couch for about five seconds and i kept hearing beeping noises. i took a peek and i was surprised, notepad was opened (left it at standby mode) and was typing "k" repeatedly as though nakabaon ung key, which wasn't. freaky.

sometimes though hunt you got to let go. i once lost all of my high school and early college files in a freak power supply incident, it was so heartbreaking that home didn't feel the same for a month but then i coped up and just little by little, moved on. now though, to make sure, i burn and archive all the important files
