I don't understand how If pitou has a chance to fight Netero, it translates into Pitou having a chance versus Meruem?

Meruem defeated Netero convincingly. It wasn't really much of a 'close' fight by any stretch of the imagination.

But if you want to compare word of mouth then:

Netero noted he doesn't know who would win in a fight vs him and Pitou. He's a troll but is combat situation awareness isn't daft enough to joke about dire straits.

Meruem himself noted that Pitou was a respectable level of power.

I mean if we're shaving value off of dialogue then that'd make Pitou at least a fighter capable of earning Meruem's respect, which seeing how he passed the same flag to Netero suggests they maybe in the same ball park.

but again, i don't think dialogue is that egocentric.

For some reason you just cannot accept the fact that Meruem only dismembered Netero because of his massive tactical knowledge that was only gained by playing with Komugi. Pitou would have never landed a blow on Netero, ever. It's directly stated that after thousands of hits, Meruem began feeling slight pain all over his body. Netero would've beat the shit out of Pitou nonstop until he crushed her into the ground like Gon did.

You just refuse to accept the fact that Netero's hand movements are so damn fast that it would make Pitou an absolutely worthless child against him in a fight.

I don't refuse to believe anything. I am just not convinced, just like you aren't of my thesis.

As i said it's a discussion thread, just for the talk, didn't come here to show people a new way of life or anything.

From reading the manga and watching the anime...I think Netero would of been able to beat any of the Royals Guard on one on one basis but it be tough .

I think if the King was not born too soon..the plan would of been to take out the ants piece by piece and eventually Netero had to face the Royal Guards.

There is no way he would of been able to beat all three so the plan would of been divide and conquer. Netero take on one of the Royal Guard and the other hunters take on the others..or maybe send in an Assassin to take out the Queens before the King is born.

I just don't see any of the Royal Guards being able to take out Netero.

Honestly any human that isn't Super Gon versus a Royal Guard would look a lot like this video of 14 lionesses versus an elephant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxgx8Ah-hNE

The difference is that here the elephant is also about 10 times faster than the lioness in the world of HXH. All the talk about strategy and everything else would not matter. A human lacks the physical strength to move a Royal Guard that is standing on solid ground (ironically, this was implied in the mid air battle where Pitou indeed was not standing on solid ground). You can do whatever crazy thing you want, but a Royal Guard is still going to just casually close the distance because no human can knock them back and no human can outrun one (Pitou arrived at basically the same time as Netero to Meryem's side despite starting from way further away). Doing attrition damage isn't going to matter on a species where the average grunt can survive for a day after being cut in half. I don't even know why Togashi bothered mentioning that Meryem getting hit by Netero hundreds of time starts to accumulate pain, as this is a guy who can rip his own arm off and then continue playing Gungi as if nothing happened. No, this doesn't mean he's impervious to damage, but you can't count on even slowing them down.

Of course, with the way the Ants fight they're more like humanoid beings with superior aura point totals and mega endurance but nothing else special. That is quite beatable compared to what they're supposed to be.

It's also rather ironic that later Netero said that one of the thing about Dark Continent was that things are unimaginably large as it shows one of his previous expedition. There's a clear implication that when things are that big all your fancy techniques isn't going to have any effect. While the Ants aren't physically bigger than humans, the endurance/strength feats they have displayed would put them well above anything a human can affect physically when they are in a guarded position. Any of the Royal Guards standing on solid ground in a standard Ken state simply isn't going to flinch from a human level attack. Killua's lightning attack is likely the only move that can physically affect a Royal Guard, in the sense that we know not even Royal Guards are immune to the shock and in a shocked state it'd be possible to move a Royal Guard.

I would not go as far.
We saw that youpi was definitely defeatable if knuckle had sticked to plan.

He coulda run with meleoron and come back after the counter is high enough.

I am also pretty sure that attacks from a powerhouse like uborgin could hurt the royal guards.
And if they are affectable by shock, then they could be poisoned, too (they could be poisoned by the rose rays, either), so someone using nen on a stron gpoisoned knife should be able to bring them down.

We also do not know how good manipulator techs work on the royal guards. It could very well be that a kiss from the woman who died in yorkshin would be able to enslave them or one of illumis needles. Piercing their skin is definitely not impossible.

I agree with you for the most part, but one thing is off.
Knuckle had to be in a specific distance so potklin would count further, he couldnt run too far away.

There's a huge difference being able to defeat/hurt a Royal Guard versus beating able to knock one down.

It is very possible to defeat one but you're not going to be able to knock one down because the physical strength required is something no human besides Uber Gon has. To put things into perspective, Pitou took a hit in the face from Meryem and also wasn't knocked down. Although Meryem may have underestimated Pitou's power, it's pretty safe to assume that even a casual hit from Meryem has far more physical power than any non Uber Gon human can possibly do. Even though Pitou was never expecting the attack, he still held his ground just fine. So an attack that can obviously can kill him if done enough times is still insufficient to knock him down even when he's not expecting it.

This means a strategy involving exchanging hits or even just doing physical attacks on Royal Guard is doomed to fail. No Royal Guard would even flinch from the trauma/impact of a physical attack delivered by a human. Again, this doesn't mean they're immune to it. The fights in HXH basically plays out like a fighting game, e.g. if A kicks B successfully then B cannot immediately counterattack because he got hit and is stuck in a recovery frame. However, that doesn't apply to the Ants. If you kick a Royal Guard, they can take damage, even significant damage, but they'll just hit you back at the same time they're taking damage because a human cannot exert enough physical force to put them in a recovery frame state. The only thing that can interrupt their attack would be something like a shocking attack which only Killua possesses. Since no human can possibly win in a straight up hit exchange it's a matter of time before you lose, because all a Royal Guard has to do let you hit them first and then immediately hit back the moment you make contact.

Now an appropriate strategy would likely involved ranged weapon and gadgets. Poison, as mentioned, would be a quite effective way to deal with them, especially given the Hunter possess quite possibly the strongest poison user in the world of HXH, Morel. Morel can conjure up clones of himself that can fool the Royal Guards for a short time (Yupi figured out where the real Morel is, but it sure wasn't immediate). He can create smoke that hides the existence of whatever poison he's using, and he is practically immune to any kind of poison gas since he can hold his breath forever. However having Morel throwing some gas grenades and taking out the Royal Guards wouldn't have made an interesting battle. Still, you can't just say 'the fights wouldn't have been fun' as an excuse. We're told that humans are willing to do whatever it takes to defeat the Ants, including detonating the equivalent of a nuke in the middle of a highly populated area (there is absolutely no evidence that Netero had a plan that can guaranteed Meryem would leave the palace), but apparently using stuff like poison gas is out of the question. Heck, if they borrowed the electric whip on the guy on the wheelchair from Celestial Arena, that could have actually turned the fight around.

By the way, the Potclean strategy pretty much requires Knuckles to be faster than Yupi. Let's look at how the foot speed of the characters in HXH match up. We know Pitou is faster than Netero (people seem to confuse his incredible hand speed with his foot speed), because Netero landed straight in the center of the palace while Pitou got knocked away a relatively large amount of distance. Further, Pitou was jumping up while Netero was jumping down when they encountered each other, which means Pitou must have landed quite a bit later after Netero landed (Pitou's En shows Netero is already inside heading toward Meryem while he was still in air). Both presumably found Meryem with En and took the shortest path possible to get there, and we know Pitou arrived at practically the same time as Netero Yet, Pitou has the lowest movement speed out of the Royal Guards, because Pitou cannot fly. Using the time Pufu used he had to try to kill Komugi prior to Meryem growing a pair of wings and after, we can assume that a winged individual is at least 5 times as fast as someone on foot (he estimated about 30 minutes prior to wings and around 5 minutes after). We see that Yupi can keep up with Pufu in air, so both should have relatively the same aerial speed.

Now even if Yupi somehow can't fly effectively in the middle of the battle, just comparing Pitou and Netero you'd get that Yupi should be able to catch up just fine unless either Yupi is much slower than the rest of the Royal Guards, or that Knuckles is much faster than Netero. I guess you can argue that Knuckles could've hide himself somewhere while still beating close enough to trigger Potclean, which would mean Yupi for some reason cannot do En greater than 100 meters (maximum distance for Potclean to trigger).

Youpi wasn't beatable... Not even close.

We never saw how much it would cost to bankrupt him after his rage guard transformation, and we know from the show his aura at least doubled... Secondly... That argument depends on Knuckle being able to avoid him for 10 more minutes in that new form. The thing about ALL the RGs is that they all died wayyyy before we saw them perform. Even if we just take the low hanging knowledge that the craters he would make would be more focused, could be fired as waves, and would be twice the size. Mix that with his new mobility and Knuckle being tired? No way. I don't see it short of Killua going through a Death Covenant and growing to like 40 y/o to help.

Melo's stealth is only good for surprising, he can only hold it so long. If he makes knuckle vanish in the middle of the fight, Uvo knows he just has to level the area around him so he can't hide.

OR... he could just run out of the castle and force them to fight him on flat terrain. or He could fly up and just rain ranged attacks in the area..

I agree about the Manipulators.

Bro you don't know how long I've been saying that on this thread haha. People take Pitou being caught off guard... one time, in the middle of the air, blind sided by an attack that came from a direction she wasn't paying attention to... in the middle of casting Nen on herself... as the proof they need to say.. Netero is definitely faster.

The Royal Guards alone would likely be undefeatable if they possess the intelligence of an average human, even though we're told that Ants are supposed to be a superior race compared to human in just about every way. About the only way they could've been defeated would involve gadgets. The electric whip used by the guy on the wheelchair in Celestial Arena seems to have a higher voltage compared to Killua's attacks (Killua said that whip is enough to make anyone not resistant to electricity pass out, while his electricity doesn't seem to be enough to induce instant unconsciousness against a human) would be far more useful than at least half of the abilities they tried to use on the Royal Guards.

The problem with the Ants fight is that they're basically treated as just humans with crazy HP/MP, even though they're far more than that. I'm pretty sure Togashi also forgot their original setting at some point. The most notable example is that Togashi felt the need to mention that all of Netero's hundreds of attacks are slowly accumulating pain/damage inside Meryem. This is a guy who can rip his own arm off and shows no sign of discomfort whatsoever, but apparently getting stung by an attack that does no meaningful damage to him hundreds of times is supposed to bother him? Yupi was said to have been under mental pressure because Shoot managed to take one of his eyes. Pufu was visibly disturbed when Killua ripped half of his clone's face off. We see a random Ant grunt can have his head severed from his body and will still survive a day while plotting how to make one final attack even though they're obviously not going to live, but apparently the far stronger Royal Guards is worried about stuff like missing an eye when you can just grow more of them (Yupi) or missing a random chunk of body cells (all of Pufu's clones are from his cells and presumably he's not using unreplaceable vital organs to make all those clones). Are we even talking about the same species here?

For the battle against Yupi, I guess you're not supposed to win against someone if you have no aura even if there's a huge baseline physical difference. Of course, Yupi went through the 'I'm being attacked by a mysterious ability that I don't know what it does but I'm going to kill my opponent as slowly as possible since I'm sure taking a lot of unneeded time isn't going to have any detrimental effect whatsoever'. That's pretty much in the 'too dumb to live' range and that's what it took to bankrupt him. I actually thought the Killua + Meleoron combo worked pretty well as that was the only combo that could've slowed down Yupi. I can live with Yupi being defeated if there wasn't the phase where Yupi is purposely smashing every smoke clone to prolong the fight needlessly.

For Manipulation abilities, they're pretty much absolute though HXH Manipulation abilities tends to have an implied physical requirement on them. For example to stick an antennae in someone effectively means someone either has a wound or a vulnerable spot, and in the world of HXH where poison > all, if someone has an open wound that you can inject stuff into, you can already win with a weapon coated with deadly/paralyzing poison applied to that spot instead of whatever agent you're using to control the other guy, so the fact that you can accomplish the same thing with a Manipulation ability is not a big deal. Anyone who is dumb enough to fall for a Manipulation ability would've died to a poison coated weapon already.

All the RGs are way above Netero in terms of raw stats. The one Netero has the highest chance to beat is Pitou, with extreme difficulty after an extremely long fight. He can beat Pouf if he decides to use Beelzebub for some reason, but he has his spores and can analyze mind + flight. If he plays his cards well Netero is screwed. But there's no way Netero could have beaten Youpi, not a single chance. Unlike the others he has a ranged attack coupled with their overwhelming strength, durability and speed, he's also a shapeshifter. Youpi would have won more easily than Meruem.

Pitou is an interesting case in the Royal Guards. Since his natural school is Specialization, this automatically makes him the easiest Royal Guard to defeat for a human, because he's got the furthest possible distance from Reinforcement, which means Pitou is the Royal Guard that is least likely to be in the 'cannot be affected by physical attacks' range. Further, he's got some really bad abilities for fighting. Dr. Blythe puts him in the equivalent of a Zetsu state, and the activation time for that ability is nontrivial. It is hard to imagine him being able to use this ability while in mid combat to heal himself, since any damage taken while attempting to use Dr. Blythe would be massive as per the usual 'Zetsu = deadmeat' rule. He does not have a group of powerful characters to control, so at best he can control random soldiers with a machine gun. While I think the role of technology is underrated, suffice to say that Hunters do not fear random puppets with machine guns. Finally, his ability to control himself would seem to be something akin to a desperation attack. That is, I imagine he can use his ability so that say he was punching one way and an opponent dodges it, then his puppet can forcefully yank his own arm the other way to connect the attack. However, this attack will likely quickly result in dislocated limbs. While dislocating a limb is not going to do meaningful damage to himself, this does meaningfully impact his further ability to do damage.

On the other hand, I can't help but to think that Pitou is meant to be the leader amongst the Royal Guards. He's the first one born and he's always the one in charge of the overall defense, and Meryem tasked him with the role of protecting Komugi as well. Sure, you can say that's because he has the biggest radius on En and that for plot purposes he's the only one that can be protecting Komugi (Yupi/Pufu would probably just try to murder her), but I don't think he gets the most important defensive roles just because the plot demands it. I also find it hard to believe that Meryem isn't aware that the rest of his Royal Guards are plotting behind his back against Komugi, so asking Pitou to protect Komugi also means he has to protect her from Yupi and Pufu.

I don't see it that way. As far as the manga showed the king, barring nen techniques, was physically the most powerful ant and with a reasonable margin at that. The king is most likely well faster than any of the royals and had the greater mind.

Youpi was never shown to be particularly fast. Surely he was significantly faster than the other nen users he faced but nothing he showed suggests he could compare to the king, let alone netero's kannon speed which easily surpassed the king. Which means that any attempt at physical combat would end up poorly for youpi, netero would see the attack coming in slow motion and block or otherwise prevent with kannon. The king managed to overcome netero's kannon speed literally and exclusively because his gungi games allowed him to perfect his ability to predict patterns and whatnot. Basically an asinine set of circumstances allowed the king to perfect an oddly specific ability he figured out via board games. Youpi can transform into anything he wants but every single thing he does will be seen in slow motion from netero's perspective. And youpi will never be able to see netero's kanon attacks coming. Even if he does, that is barely the first step, he will still never be able to avoid them.

Then there are youpi's ranged attacks. They could potentially kill netero but we have to consider something else here. There is no scenario in which youpi, or any other royal for that matter, can in any form or context even approach kannon's speed. Anything the royals do in this regard will invariably be slow motion for netero. That includes long range nen attacks as well. So netero will see youpi charging his attacks in slow motion and netero will have ample time to get kannon's borderline indestructible arms to block. I'd be a different thing if there was even a slight chance of youpi damaging kannon however that is a feat which went even beyond meruem from when he fought netero. So youpi should not be able to do that either. I guess yupi could win if he literally self destructs using the whole of his nen however that is more like a tie....

The way the manga presented netero's speed next to the kings pretty much suggests there is nothing the royals can ever do to overcome it. They literally have none of the tools the king had at his disposal (inferior physical capacities as far as we know and nothing near the king's brilliant mind nor his passion or board games) to deal with it. And their own abilities don't really suggest anything specific they can do to do it themselves. Each royal has more physical strength, endurance, stamina and nen than netero. It's not even a small difference, its immense. However when it comes to speed its the royals who don't come even vaguely close to netero. The royals have not shown any specific nen which they can impose over netero to suppress him either. As in "netero does something" then "enemy nen activates". Youpi is a transformer and has powerful emission moves. Pitou uses a doll to increase his physical capacity beyond his limits. Pufu can use en to figure out his enemy and can make clones. So... what would they do other than try to attack and get pushed back?

Netero's speed is one of those nonsense concepts because if it's as unstoppable as it looks then he'd still be the strongest person in the world. I mean if you need Meryem's super intelligence to see through the weakness of his technique then what can a normal human possibly do against it? The fact that he's not even the top 5 strongest anymore (otherwise Biscuit would've mentioned that Netero is one of them when she confirmed Ging is one) means all he has is speed and that even against human opponents, his attacks don't have enough stopping power to knock them down (otherwise he'd never lose because no human possess Meryem's intellect + durability). Now obviously some suspension of belief is involved since it's supposed to be Netero's last hurrah instead of seeing him getting instantly smashed by a Royal Guard that just walked through his attack (anything a human can take a Royal Guard can just walk through) but to say that Netero's stats actually make sense is just not true.

For a good similar example, you can check out the Dugu 9 Swords Technique from The Proud Smiling Wanderer, which is something after you study you'll magically always see your opponent's weakness in every move and your attacks will always hit the opponent first. This technique completely ignores your existing intelligence/perception/speed, as in learning the technique doesn't make you any smarter/faster, but you basically just say "I learned the Dugu 9 Swords!" and you will always hit an opponent's weak spot before they hit you no matter what move they did, and regardless of the difference in your opponent's speed and yours. Now since that was the main character's go-to move we can't really argue against that but that doesn't mean a move like that is at all plausible even in fiction.

Youpi's speed should at least make him able to keep up with his brothers. And Netero totally outclasses him only when it comes to prayers. Meruem's moves were not slow to Netero, it's jsut that comapred to the speed of his prayers(and only his prayers), Meruem is a slug. Moreover, HK attacks would not really affect him. Unlike against Meruem, Netero will have to be a lot more mobile against an opponent like Youpi or Pouf, by using his legs, not stay stationary and prays, and he has nothing to finish them.

Youpi could just stay at a safe distance and create explosions with his blasts, and use his incredibly versatile shapefshifting ability to trouble him even more.

True, it is only the prayers but that does not make any difference here. Everything netero did to meruem he can do to the royals by at least many times over. For that matter, netero does not have to be any more mobile against the royals than he was against the king. To begin with, the king was faster than any of the royals. There is the flying bit however I doubt it would make a difference. Meruem attacked netero from all possible angles, we saw that in their fight. We saw meruem jumping around like it was nothing. And it did not deter netero in the slightest. To boot, netero was in no form or context stationary while fighting. He literally followed meruem around and took a rather proactive role to attacking.

Even if youpi could do that, odds are it wouldn't do anything. Netero is indeed fast and he has his kannon which as far as we know is indestructible. One way or the other if meruem did not have the capacity to even scratch the thing then certainly the inferior youpi does not. Just bombing netero from a distance would result in netero either dodging or blocking with kannon. And even then, kannon has insane range as well. How far away can youpi be so that he has some sort of chance to hit netero? 100 meters away? Even assuming that is outside netero's range or that netero can't keep up to keep pounding him odds are it would make netero harder to hit.

And the more important part, anything netero did to meruem he can do many times over to the royals. Attacks that surpassed the kings speed become attacks that the royals can barely see at all. Sure, it took hundreds of thousands of attacks for the king to feel any pain. But what about with a weaker enemy? They have shown no plausible means to counter netero's kannon speed. I doubt the royals have it in them to take literally hundreds of thousands of attacks the same way the king could. And event then, netero has his last resort, zero. It managed to capture meruem so we can make a pretty safe case that the royals can be captured just as easily. Pufu has a chance of escaping because netero has to catch the real one but at least yupi and pufu are screwed. So, could they survive zero after taking every punch netero can throw at them? They start in a presumably worst condition than the king did and would definitely take more damage.

Saying a human can knock down a Royal Guard+ opponent is like saying a cat can scratch a human and knock you down. Actually the latter is likely considerably more probable given the depiction of the sheer strength of these opponents. The Royal Guards/Meryem fights are essentially depicted as if it's a fighting game, like if you land a fierce on Meryem you can start your combo because he's staggered. In reality Meryem would not even flinch no matter what physical attack you can do at the human level to him and he'd just walk through it like a Terminator walks through bullets. There wouldn't even need to be a concept of 'seeing opponent's move' at the Ants level, because they can simply withstand any attack and who cares if your opponent's hand is moving so fast if you know his foot speed is slower than you? It's not like Netero can possibly run away faster than any Royal Guard or Meryem, so all they have to do is take the hits and then tackle him and then it'd be over.

In the fight against Meryem, Netero is depicted as someone who is able to knock down Meryem while he's in a reasonably guarded position. Such power would instantly pulverize any human and make his claim about 'no longer top of the world' a ridiculous farce. To put things in perspective, Meryem can't knock down Pitou with a hit in the face even while intend to kill, and no matter how much he may have underestimated Pitou, it's hard to see any human possibly taking a hit from Meryem with the intention to kill and not die, and yet this isn't enough to knock Pitou down. And then Netero was able to knock Meryem down, who is surely more durable than Pitou. Yes, if someone can knock down Meryem they'd obviously have a very good chance beating a Royal Guard, because that means your physical power is at a point where you can directly harm Meryem let alone Royal Guard, except this kind of power far exceeds what humans can do since that is, at the very minimum, the ability to kill any human in one hit because you've to hit harder than Meryem did while he tried to kill Pitou even though it's nearly certain no human can possibly withstand such a hit.

Well, to be fair:

Netero is depicted as basically beyond human. He started his training praying at the mountains basically as someone who had already mastered nen and martial arts. And from then he awakened with speed beyond anything we have ever seen. Even to that nen master he was but a blur. Netero's training went beyond what even high level nen users go through and the result, apparently kannon, was one of those weird intricacies of nen that went even beyond his own intentions.

Netero was probably lying when he said that as well. He even said morel and knov were stronger than him which the two of them immediately pointed out was far from the truth. Now, that is not to say netero can't be beaten by other nen users. Nen is a deep thing and it depends on a lot of things. Even netero can fall prey to activating an enemy's nen through some action for instance. That said, odds are that there isn't a single human nen user who can actually react to netero's speed. All in all, netero would be the strongest and most skilled nen user around. However that does not mean he is immediately unbeatable. Just that his speed is so absurb no human can ever hope to get a glimpse of it.

The king's hit against pitou was probably stronger than netero's own kannon attacks except zero. Pitou got an actual scratch from that attack, whereas the one attack he took from netero did not leave any. The difference would be the cumulative damage over literally hundreds of thousands of hits he can't perceive or otherwise react to. It eventually caused actual pain to the king, the same would apply but many times over with pitou. However netero does pack a more than significant punch with his own kannon attacks and event that is kinda mild. He literally creates craters when punching and a series of attacks kinda flattened an entire area and opened the way to the tomb where his confrontation with meruem ended.

Netero would easily die from a single well placed hit by either the royals or the king. Thing is, landing that one hit takes insane effort for the king and would likely be near impossible for the royals.

Well let me put it this way. Let's say Netero can do enough force to knock down Meryem in a single hit (that's what he must have done to keep his distance). What would happen if you put another human in place of Meryem? They'd have to be completely pulverized by such an attack, no? Sure you can say Netero is just that much powerful, but then it's a direct contradiction of how he is no longer the strongest human in the world. Last time I checked, if you can pulverize any human in one hit, that should comfortably make you the #1 even if he can't keep that up for very long.

To make the Ant arc dramatic it's clear the Royal Guards and Meryem are massively nerfed compared to their initial status. Remember Yupi described attacks on him as attacks by annoying flies. Even when he's completely caught off guard, we certainly don't him getting knocked down by the attacks the Hunters throw at him, and that make sense, otherwise it'd be a ridiculous metaphor to compare Hunters to flies unless it's common for a fly to knock someone down!

Another way to look at the impossibility of knocking a Royal Guard down would be that Knuckles can only take about 2000 damage (Gon's rock is rated at that range and we know it can definitely KO him from full health) before going unconscious. Yupi on a strong punch can do at least 12000 damage (goes through a 10K Potclean and is said to be able to kill Knuckles in the process). Let's say the strongest human have a maximum of 4000 defense. That is, they can block a hit twice as strong as Gon's rock without flinching. Even though there is nobody that's ever shown this level of physical endurance, that means Yupi's strong punch at 12000 damage can still easily kill such a guy. Now let's say Yupi switched sides and fought against Meryem. Do you really expect Yupi to be able to so effortlessly knock Meryem down like Netero did, despite being able to punch for damage that is well above what can kill any human? Again I don't mean Meryem is immune to damage, but apparently Netero was able to hit him so hard to break up his momentum on every one of his attacks, which means he has to be able to knock Meryem down, not just damage him.

I'm sure Togashi is aware that he ignored the fact that knocking someone down > doing damage to someone. The Hunters can do damage to Yupi (not meaningful amount, but they definitely can), but they're nowhere close to knocking him down unless they hit him exactly the moment he's shocked or doing a transformation (supposedly he's focusing all his power on the transformation or something). The Royal Guards conveniently forgot about their durability in the fight to make the fight look interesting, but it also creates a lot of nonsensical scenario. For example we see Yupi formed a hand to block Morel's pipe. Why would he even need to do that? If Morel's pipe has some special effect on it, it doesn't matter if it hits his hand or his body as both would still trigger it. If the pipe has no special effect, how can anybody using a blunt object possibly do enough damage to Yupi to matter to warrant defending?

Recall when Machi was blinded by the darkness against Killua, all she did was cover her head because her body is strong enough to take Killua's attack and then instantly wrap him up, even though she cannot see Killua at all. That should be how the Royal Guards and Meryem fight, except they probably don't even need to cover their head. In fact, in the Ant arc they sort of got the Hunter/Ants mentality wrong. Plenty of Hunters have talked about how they want to fight the 'right way' in an honorable duel and whatnot, so it's quite possible to see Hunters ignore the method I mentioned above even if they're capable of pulling it off. Ants, of course, are supposed to only care about success of the species as a whole, and yet they inexplicably get into a bunch of 'honorable battle' against Hunters and ignore their overwhelming physical ability that allows them to cheese any combat.

Not being one of the top 5 nen users does not mean he is not the strongest fighter.

As i mentioned in another threat, the building of greed island is something much more incredible than netero did.
Netero is an insanely strong fighter with a great hatsu, but building up a game with nen techniques in it like teleporting, luck enhancement, healing some mroe downright magic effects, that's really something.

Similarly, as an example, in the spiders, i'd be very positive about uvorgin being one of the strongest fighters of the spiders, but having less nen mastery than kutopi.

Netero himself said that noone dared to come forward to fight him since he got his superpowers, and that makes me think he was, until he fought meruem absolutely undefeated and undisputed, even if he thought there might be humans capable of beating him (which is very well possible with a hatsu suited for it).

However, he might have been generous there, too.
