Hayao Miyazaki, the 'Walt Disney of Japan,' still does animation the old fashioned way in 'Ponyo'

While 3-D, computer-animated movies like the "Toy Story" and "Shrek" franchises rule the cineplex, the 68-year-old "Walt Disney of Japan" remains drawn to pencils and ink. His latest animated movie, "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea," in theaters Friday, features a record 170,000 frames, every single one of which was drawn by hand.
"The world might be going toward high tech, but I would like to have [my animation company] Studio Ghibli to be like a wooden boat that journeys with sails," he told The News through a translator.
"Of course, we can sink. I don't know if we're very strong, and we're not confident about the future."
Judging by a visit to his studio complex, nestled on a tree-lined street in suburban Tokyo, there's no chance of that ship taking on water anytime soon. The interview takes place in Miyazaki's sprawling private workshop, a two-story Victorian-style house that he designed himself.
Next door is a full-time day-care center, which he had built for his employees' children — and to give him inspiration for creating movies for kids whenever he looks out the window.
It's an animation empire built on the success of movies like 2004's "Howl's Moving Castle" and 1989's "Kiki's Delivery Service." His "Spirited Away," which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2002, earned $230 million in Japan alone.
In contrast, that critically acclaimed movie only earned $10 million in U.S. theaters.
But the kid-friendly "Ponyo" may be Miyazaki's best chance at crossing over to American audiences.
It's a variation on "The Little Mermaid" taken into uncharted depths; the story of a magical goldfish who wills herself into becoming a human girl after she is befriended by a 5-year-old boy, Sosuke.
Nothing is that simple, however, in a Miyazaki movie: Ponyo's magical transformation unwittingly unleashes a tsunami that brings back a rich palette of sea life extinct since prehistoric times.
He was inspired by what he witnessed during a vacation on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea in Japan.
"I saw how people have polluted the sea, and came back home really angry and irritated," says Miyazaki.
In the meantime, he has won over at least one very important American fan.
On the day that I visited the offices of Studio Ghibli, Miyazaki had another, much more high-profile visitor: Disney Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter.
The animation legend behind Pixar movies like "Toy Story" and "Cars" stopped by to talk about Disney's plans for the American release of "Ponyo" and to talk trade with a longtime friend.
