I have the idea that the weapons are named for people who lived in the Void Century.
When Neptune spoke to Robin about the weapons he said the weapons "bear the names of the "Gods""

We’re all aware that in the real world Poseidon, Pluton and Uranus are Ancient Greek Gods. However, I don’t think the real Greece exists in the One Piece World.
We know that the current Poseidon’s real name is Shirahoshi and she “inherited” the name after another Poseidon who possessed the same abilities before her.

At this point you could argue that Poseidon is the Ancient Weapon so that disproves my theory that they’re named after people. And you wouldn’t be wrong. However, Pluton (as we know) is a ship not a person. Someone had to have written the blueprints Franky owned and built the ship at some point. It couldn’t have just appeared out of thin air. And when they did, I believe they named it after a very important person. Perhaps the person who designed it in the first place. As for Uranus (the weapon), well it’s still a complete mystery except for its name. Who it could be named for is also a mystery.
I believe that Joy Boy went to these people and asked for their help in the war with the 20 kingdoms and the ancient weapons were made available to him in response. But I think circumstances stopped Joyboy before he could complete whatever plan he had for the weapons. Which is why he made the ponyglyphs not just with the history on them but directions to the ancient weapons as well.

I think the names given to the Ancient weapons is just a hint about their nature:
-Pluton is the ruler of the underworld and is represented by a warship, a weapon of death and destruction. Although Pluton can have some positive aspects in Greek mythology
-Poseidon is the ruler of the Seas. Having a giant mermaid represent him is undestandable. Also funny how her father is Neptune, which is essentially the Roman counterpart of Poseidon.
-And finally Uranus literally Sky or Heaven in Greek. He's the first god personifying the Sky in Greek mythology. Because of that there's a good chance Uranus will be an airborne creature or weapon.
I doubt those three were real people, rather they were given such names by their creators as a way to describe their role, and because of their destructive nature, which can be compared to that of a god. Pluton is said to be able to destroy entire islands and judging by the fact there are prints, it's possible to built more than one Pluton. Poseidon is a male name, so my guess is that the first mermaid with Poseidon's power could have been male. And finally if Uranus can fly then it cannot be reached by normal means. We saw how much trouble Enel went through to be able to reach the moon, and sky islands aren't easily accessible.
Well that's my take on it. Also I don't see why this can't be discussed along other theories regarding the weapons.
Also just because we haven't seen the Greeks doesn't mean they can't exist altogether, or their mythology at the very least. If such a thing as the Bible exist, the one Kuma carries around then it's possible that a thing such as Gods existed in the past, about 800 years ago for example :amuse

If you think about it, there seems to be someone or something missing. Poseidon, Uranus, and Pluton are named. Which means someone or something named them. Someone or something must have been the ruler/master/leader/director of these 3 weapons. I was thinking it was Joyboy or maybe someone else, someone related to Joyboy or his boss. Why did Joyboy have to break his promise? We do not know yet but we do know that Joyboy was at least in a position of power so whatever triggered his uhh betrayal of sorts must have been something powerful. So who/what named these weapons? Who/what caused Joyboy to not keep his end of the deal? I am going to say this on a whim. Zeus. If Joyboy's real name is Zeus then cool. If not, and someone else is Zeus, that is cool too.

The problem here that some people will bring up is Uranus it/himself because Uranus was an elder to Zeus. I say that that doesn't matter because there is nothing keeping me from kicking my own uncle's ass. That's why. I wonder if all this will tie back in with our dear friend Enel. It is speculated that if there are sky islands and if Enel is on the moon, then it is not too farfetched to say that there are space (Asteroids?) islands or at least another part of the moon. I just got this feeling that Enel will come back because antsgonists tend to come back in this manga and when we see him again he will be tougher and by then the 3rd weapon will be explained.

The Ancient weapons were created and used during the Void Century; after the war, they were hidden to be left dormant due to their destructive capabilities.

The Tenryuubito are descendants of the 20 kingdoms which essentially makes this 20 Kingdom Tenryuubito; the Great kingdom are natural enemies of this 20 kingdoms coalition which hints at the Great Kingdom being related to the D. clan or even being them since the Tenryuubito call them "God's natural enemy".

The Great Kingdom were technologically far more advanced than any other; so it's quite possible that they were ambushed by the 20 kingdoms despite the Great Kingdom being peaceful. It's the only thing I can make out that explains why they lost despite owning such knowledge.

The fact they possessed unparalleled knowledge suggests that this Great Kingdom was possibly comprised of Humans, Fishmen, Winged-beings, etc. who all worked together and share information. The OP lore is quite interesting, makes me want to re-read OP from chapter 1,:^_^.
