Before I begin I would like to state that I do not mind and/or care about if people accept that Power of Feelings are a thing and that it is cringe worthy to them, that is their business or personal opinion, but for those that doesn't think, or they deny that Power of Feelings is a real force or that people shouldn't use it, that is what brings up many problems.

Now, onto the main subject, Power of Feelings may seem like a convenient plot device or PIS (to other verses that doesn't respect their own rules or usage of powers), but in this case for Fairy Tail, Power of Feelings is basically the most intricate part of Magic System, before talking about the One Magic, its basic overview is that Magic is the physical embodiment of one's spirit, when the physical spirit of an organism and the spiritual flow of natural are connected or bonded together, it formed as magic as a result.

Another thing about Magic is that since it is nature, nature is part of life too, magic is technically alive. And as many powers in the manga verse are tied to around spirituality and life force usage, this is no exception as it's power revolves around three of the six key Power Aspects from my research of superpower categories, and those are Magic (Paranormal), Divine (Supernatural), Philosophy (Mental).

With Magic, people must understand that it is a force of which it is something that acts outside the normality of natural phenomenons. People will claim that it is merely a trick, a deception of the eyes or exploitation of unnatural powers.

Divine is more around the religious category, which is described in seeking strength, courage and aspiration and belief from a external factor or force. This can be God or gods, or a principle or individuals.

In this case for Magic in the Fairy Tail universe, Magic and Religion are one in the same, gaining power to influence the world around them through the power of belief or feelings.

Now, feelings can be defined as the same as emotions or empathy, and connecting to nature is a form of empathy. Which when one has greater feelings, the stronger one's bond with nature is and thus have a greater usage of their magic. A perfect example of this is Lucy's Celestial Spirit Magic, she has the greatest connection to her spirits out of all the Celestial Wizards, and it is shown that she has great potential" and there are so many cases that when she shows those feelings there is some Magic surge that happens. The reason for this is even though we do not know the exact origins of the Spirits, they are magical in nature and thus considered living beings, they live along side with humans and their relationship is not of master and servant (except for Virgo :LOL), but of that trust and union, they work to make each other's lives more comfortable.

That is why a one sided relationship will never last long and can never be stable, that is where taboos and limits exist. The is also the factor that the stronger the magic, the more it is likely to chose it's user, it is likely to overwhelm and destroy those with weak minds or frail constitutions. That is why that Magic functions appropriately with extremely great mental concentration.

Now about people wishing that people would stop using the power of feelings, it is basically wishing for characters to stop using magic all together. It is the same as asking the Jedi to stop using the force, or Haki users to stop using Haki, or Ki users to stop using Ki. It's even like trying to ask people to stop being friends with people or working together. It doesn't work like that, it is a high demand to make for you to have to fulfill your desires.

Magic isn't some power, it is no different than the bonds friends form with others to avoid being alone and isolated. It is not something that you can control it is part of life and nature, the more you try to control and force it to your will, the more it will act against you. It is a mutual function which it benefits you and that you benefit it in turn.

Now with the One Magic, that is a whole other can of worms, One Magic has had many theories as to what it is, but the most plausible one is that it is "Love" while cringe worthy to some people, it is understandable since Love is another aspect of Life itself, because without Love, life would not exist, we would not seek to continue our species and give our love to others. However Love is not all that virtuous either, because Love can lead to hatred, jealousy and fear, that is how Curses where created.

Curses like Magic are created and empowered by emotions too, but negative ones, and perform more sinister effects that seeks great harm upon others. But unlike Magic, it is not sourced by spiritual life essence, but something else entirely, nothingness energy.

This shows the third aspect of the power of feelings, mental. That is why it is not some convenient power up when ever it is necessary, it is just as natural as breathing and experiencing an emotion.

I have more info but I will just leave this here for now, but again, It is for those who believe that power of feelings does not or should not exist. For those who believe it does exist and just dislike it, then that is your opinion, all I will say is that it is basically saying other powers like Haki, Ki, the Force and other powers similar is stupid.

In if the power of the emotions and the feelings is something that has been used from always in the histories of Magic, in Dungeons and Dragons it has been used from always and many magicians of the Fiction relate the feelings and emotions as the fundamental base of the same ones.

To renounce or to catalogue of ridiculously it is like like a good you say it, they would have to catalogue all power of the fiction of ridiculously.

Thank you.

In each fiction handles its concepts but lately seems to exist the tendency to reduce concepts only because they are not "Bad Ass" or overly stuffy with pseudocientific concepts thinking that they are better than other concepts.

It is basically a discrimination to a different methodology focused on personal tastes.

I'm 100% with you.

I can trace thus back all the way to the Erza vs Laxus fight. She said that when two people are using the same magic in battle 2 things are judged.
The strength of their magic.
And
The strength of their Heart.
It's a package deal. You can't have one without the other.

Say another Fire Dragon Slayer appears and faces Natsu. Natsu will have to use his overall strength plus the strength of his heart to win, saying the opponent doesn't use one.

Real World Example: Say you're in a bake off. Your opponent is making the same thing you are, Chocolate Chip Cookies. How do you win? Take the two things you need, see what they aren't doing, then use what they are and aren't using. They are using no sugar but are using chocolate chips, so what do you do?
Use sugar and chocolate chips.

Power of Feelings should only be considered an adrenaline rush. I understand that emotions do play a part in battle, and a major part in fact... but the storyline still has to make sense when PoF is incorporated.

In other words, my opinion is that Power of Feelings should only be used to portray the struggle and the desperation for the protagonists in a battle.

The problem with PoF is when it is used for convenience because that destroys the villains' characterization as well as all the other characters surrounding that specific person receiving the PoF treatment.

Sure, it puts one lucky person on a pedestal, but whether that be your favorite or least favorite character, everybody still has to acknowledge that other people around are suffering because of it.

PoF is actually one of the core reasons why many other characters get underrated or downplayed.

It creates a massive imbalance or fluctuation and skews the power levels to ridiculous heights.

For example, good ways that PoF should be used would be situations like:

- Makarov's last stand against Alvarez

Makarov used the emotions of his Fairy Tail children to give him the strength and motivation to cast a final spell that would ultimately save the guild.

Of course that came with his life, but he managed to cover a large radius of the battlefield and was able to throw Alvarez off track from having the advantage and overpowering Ishgar.

It was a great move, and although the actions taken required major skill, PoF was used effectively and played an important purpose on the plot.

- Natsu and Gajeel vs. Laxus

In theory, during that arc, Laxus should have been able to 1v2 Gajeel and Natsu, but that wasn't the case since Natsu and Gajeel were able to use an adrenaline rush to obtain victory.

Since Laxus said some absurd things about Fairy Tail at the time, Natsu and Gajeel were able to use anger and emotions to drive their strength and tap into their hidden power, which allowed them to ultimately defeat Laxus in the end.

In other words, emotions were used here as a source of stimulation, but not as outright oneshot.

You get the idea.

Basically the above is where I think PoF can be used to its full potential.

PoF that I think is completely absurd would be battles like Erza vs. Azuma and Erza vs. Minerva in GMG when she had a broken/injured leg.

In Erza vs. Azuma, Erza was getting dominated head on for 98% of the match, but at the last second, Erza thought of Jellal/Natsu and oneshotted Azuma. That was completely ridiculous and defied all logic.

Same with Erza vs. Minerva... Erza saved Kagura from the falling rock, which caused her leg to be broken/severely injured.

Yet, Erza was able to pull off some Nakagami Armor that allows her to cut through all space (conveniently, that is Minerva's main magic, Space Magic), and then she proceeded to oneshot the strongest wizard from the Sabertooth Guild, who was ranked #1 at that time.

Other than that, I'm alright with PoF as long as it doesn't negatively affect other characters or the plot, for that matter.

I understand what you feel, I do, but with PoF in those situations, it can also be tied to faith as well, belief in others and those people's strength will flow into you, just like how people believe in God to gain some sort of inner strength. And people of feelings can work to give one strong will power and keep fighting despite some sever injures. It can also be defined as "Being True to Oneself"

And as for the Erza vs Azuma fight, it was stated that the power of Tenrou was aiding her in the end, though it is the same process how PoF works.

With Erza vs Minerva, I understand how you feel, and we have to remember that Erza has strong will power and drives her on, in fact she is like the Kenpachi of the Fairy Tail verse. XD

Also while PoF is a good thing to have, it is not always the deciding factor, the person could be way stronger or the PoF could work against you.

With the Laxus vs Natsu & Gajeel, though they were determined, Laxus was way stronger, Laxus was attempting to kill everyone with Fairy Law but failed because he truly cared about everyone. When he used up a lot of magic, that gave Natsu the edge he needed to win.

Wait....I just realized...is PoF for "Power of Friendship" or "Power of Feelings" ?

I am serious here,not a one liner.
Power of Feelings. The fan term to describe how feelings can become power. It's often subbed out for "friendship" since everyone in the guild are friends/nakama power etc...

Magic is defined as the physical embodiment of the spirit in Fairy Tail. Magic is apparently limited by two factors: the magic gauge of the user (that is, the amount of magic power they've got) and the intensity of their feelings/state of mind. By that, Mashima wanted to justify anything that might not make sense.

Our problem is that we intend to extrapolate the basics of magic to the basics of "physical strength" in our real world. They cannot equate. While it is true feelings play a role in the strength of a person as an adrenaline rush, an average person will never be able to "punch" as hard as a professional, not even if outraged.

At this point I believe we have to take all this with a pinch of salt, I mean, at this point anyone could defeat Irene/August/Zeref/Acnologia with a bit of PoF.

Both, and friendship is considered part of Feelings.

Not necessarily, people can be defeated with power of feelings if the person you are fighting is already stronger, or if you are exhausted or injured, or whatever the battle scenario is.

Magic is not some physical phenomena, it is a paranormal phenomenon that exists outside the normalcy of things. We cannot look at things as something materialistic thing and look beyond what we know in simplicity.

I want to say off the bat i liked how much time you put into this post, i think you bring up some interesting points for sure with this.

That being said however i just can't help but feel this is not how Hiro applies POF. I mean you have to be honest and say FT is a shonen, pretty run of the mill one at that with it's concepts and ideas at a base level. Therefore it's hard for me personally to believe he would apply this in such a deep manner, especially because like you said it's done in other forms in other manga's. Thus i would have to believe that only Hiro applies such deep logic into his POF power ups and others do not. Or rather i also think they do not, i should say.

Haki is very different from what you are saying because at least in two of the forms it has never received a power up mid battle. It's a sustained level of strength for the user built up over time. Conqueror's Haki knocks more people out the stronger you are with it. That type has been more prone to what you are saying, as it has been used in moments of desperation as well.

Ki in DB is not used like this at all other than i suppose Rage Boosts (where the user gets stronger through anger), which is very similar to what you are saying i would agree.

I would also say Force is used in such a way, as it also works essentially like rage boost too.

I would tend to agree with @Nemispelled more in that it's an adrenaline rush type of thing more. Still regardless why i personally do not like these types of things being overused is because quite frankly they are lazy. They have no tangible limits and therefore the author can just make characters stronger than another whenever he wants by saying it's the POF.

I like the idea behind what you are saying but i simply do not think in canon the manga has explained this in such a direct and complex manor. As such i am inclined to believe it's not that complicated imo. Furthermore even if it is like this, as i said it's too loose of a power up mechanic.

I understand and accept the type of manga i am reading, and tbh it's in other manga's as well i agree. However i feel FT uses it too much and dehypes it's villains by having them have often far less conviction and heart than the heroes. As such they tend to get run over by anyone with a FT emblem on them.

Just my thoughts though, and i found your post an interesting read nonetheless. :verily

I understand she how you feel, and good pointers, and let me just say these.

Well with Haki I know that you need to train to master and can they can activate them unintentionally. it is the same with magic at times, like with Erza activating her magic for the first time through raw emotions, but she trained it to master it.

And one of the uses of Magic required is extreme mental concentration, and the Vanish brothers pointed out that a wizards weakness is their bodies.

Again you have a point, FT is a Shonen so POF is natural to appear, but what is important is to know is how powers and energies work and to look at it over the course of the manga, there are a few people who has great knowledge of magic that can be reliable sources of what magic is.

Exactly, it is not a physical thing, you can not train it, you can not have it physically, and it is that many confuse concepts, feelings and emotions are linked to impulses of the body like adrenaline, but it is not the only thing, Motivation that the characters have and how they handle it.

Feelings move based on concentration and be mentally focused on your goal, which is what you see in Fairy Tail, when you let yourself be carried by your feelings without being centered you can pass what happened to Kagura, got a huge Power but not being centered lost the fight for not being able to fight properly.

Erza usually uses the feelings to obtain an increase of energy but if they see it well she never loses the head, always is concentrated in its objective, I include in its moments with greater anger, she continues with the cold head using the emotions and feelings to direct That force to its target, as it does the magicians of several fictions.

It is purid to make an assimilation with energies like Haki or Ki, but at the same time they must be differentiated by their different concepts of form, origin and management.

In magicians what is important is the feelings and emotions, and in it Mashima has maintained that Logica with force, one can be very strong physically, but if the animal state is poor, it would lose to a magician who is physically weaker but that its state Animic be high and control your power better.

That is why the brute Force does not define the power of a Magician, but rather the animistic situation of each one.

Moving my discussion of PoF from the 100 Years Quest thread to this thread. I realize it was getting off-topic, but still want a chance to elaborate on my point.

In Nanatsu no Taizai, All Works of Yoshikawa, and is notorious tan Black Clover put elements from Fairy Tail (and Naruto) in Thei're Manga

I have noticed that many have put as a point against the "Power of Friendship" or the Nakamapower called evil, which is simply attacking the motivation of the characters, which raises their morale.

The Author of Kenichi, the most powerful disciple in history, criticized the Fans who attack the motivations, when one of the characters expresses that what motivates him is the love he has for a person and wonders if it is wrong to have a motivation like that and not cooler things ... the answer that they give obvious is a blow in the mouth to the critics, since the character, the Villain, a character that even the heroes respect, tells him that what whether it motivates you is good, it is not exaggeration or anything like that, the motivation can come from any side, from wanting to be stronger, from wanting to protect your people, from wanting to dominate everything, friendship, love, hatred, They are all equally good if they are used so that your motivation allows you to move forward and win.

There is nothing wrong with your motivation is not "Cool" because if it works, you should use it.

That happens in the Mangas, in FT the friendship and the Family is their motivation, which raises their morale and allows them to win.

While there were certain jokes like "It's because it's Erza" those were nothing more than that, jokes, criticizing a character for doing that would be hypocritical not to criticize those who do the same but praise as idols, just because your motivation is more "cool" than fighting for your family.

The issue is to validate the context of each story and what is the motivation that is handled in it, not to expect a Nekketsu to behave like a Gore or a Seinen, because they are for different audiences, what works for them others do not, and that is what gives variety to the sleeves.

Anyway.

I hope to see the 3 as soon as possible.

The problem is that PoF itself is not innocent either. While it does help one lucky character achieve victory, it destroys the impact of all the other characters in the series.

Disliking PoF has nothing to do with wishing another character to fail. I don't mind to see Erza win a fight. I just want her opponents to be treated well and for the story to flow smoothly (meaning it has to somewhat make sense).

It's not like I had something against Erza since the very beginning of the series... in fact, Erza and Gray are what got me into the series, believe it or not.

The reason why I became a fan of Fairy Tail in the first place was because I saw Erza and Gray on a poster and I thought their design looked cool. So I decided to check out the series and instantly liked the plot of the Galuna Island Arc.

Sure, PoF might allow a specific character to shine and emerge victorious, but have you considered what it does to the opponents of those characters?

Not everybody likes the same characters in a manga. And most people like plots that are easy to understand and comprehend.

PoF is an element that introduces an eternal mystery into the story that can never be solved. And naturally, that is unappealing to the readers because nobody can explain why the event happened... which disrupts the smooth flow of the plot.

It is simply not enjoyable and also ruins the personality of the character who is receiving the PoF treatment.

Their character becomes extremely 1-dimensional since their explanation for winning is always "I love my friends, so that's why I can make the impossible become possible".

I'm sure you've read one of my posts above in this thread (since I saw you participate in the discussion), but in case you haven't, here is what I'm trying to say:

Power of Feelings should only be considered an adrenaline rush. I understand that emotions do play a part in battle, and a major part in fact... but the storyline still has to make sense when PoF is incorporated.

In other words, my opinion is that Power of Feelings should only be used to portray the struggle and the desperation for the protagonists in a battle.

I think it is important to do that while At times Power of Feelings does give a wizard a power boost it does not always guarantee victory, as there are times when a character struggles with enemies, either through various circumstances such as injuries, cheating, multiple characters ganging up on the person of simple power differences.

POF has been described in the series as a legitamate power source for wizards, not just Fairy Tail. It even determines a wizard’s magic capabilities as well as they can be defined by the heart of the person, if a person is not convicted, then the power of feelings would turn against them, like Laxus and Sting.

As for characters who uses it, I do not believe it is anything out of character for Fairy Tail characters or anyone who is benevolent towards other to be able to harness it as kindness towards others is a principle doctrine of Fairy Tail guild and it’s members

I actually don't have a problem when characters use their emotions to boost their power. I agree that most people fight better when they're angry/passionate, as opposed to when they are relaxed.

But in my opinion, there has to be a "trigger" for a character to access these emotions and there also has to be limitations.

By a trigger, I mean something has to happen that makes a character feel extreme emotions, such as desperation or rage. For example, when Mirajane saw Elfman get tortured by Freed in the Battle of Fairy Tail Arc, her sense of helplessness activated her Satan Soul form. This gave her access to a new set of hidden potential that was temporarily "locked" inside of her.

And by limitations, I mean there has to be some physical limitations where PoF will work. For example, a broken-leg Erza winning against a full-powered healthy Minerva does not make sense. Same with Erza vs. Kyouka, when Erza was stripped of all her senses and severely beaten.

Also, it is almost physically impossible for Erza to jump hundreds of feet in the air and tank an enhanced meteor when 90% of her bones were broken.

If the author really feels the need to use PoF to edge a victory, either the author can make the power gap smaller between the 2 fighters or the author should avoid a situation where a character has 90% broken bones, yet can still leap towards the sky.

But in other cases when the two people fighting are near the same level, that extra boost from having stronger beliefs can make the difference.

Most people don't mind it when 2 nearly equal characters are fighting, but one takes the victory due to having a magical boost from stronger beliefs/emotions.

I think the PoF that most people are referring to is when one character is drastically weaker than their opponent or severely handicapped (critically injured, lost all of their senses, etc.), but they somehow manage to one-shot their opponent who has no injuries and show no signs of exhaustion.

Sure, stronger beliefs can help you win a hard-fought battle.

But stronger beliefs should not be the entire reason that a character wins a battle, in my opinion.

Well in almost every case, fits what you mean by trigger as their emotions are what drives them. And as for limits, I don’t really see feeling emotions to have limits, it’s almost asking to limit how much you breath. Also for Erza, almost every Shonen Manga needs an OP character that can do ridiculous feats. With Erza however she has been subject to defeats or outside aid around the ending of the series

Emotions are important in a Magician, in almost all Fictions they play a vital role and in FT has always highlighted that importance of the Feelings and Emotions to be able to be enhanced.

It is the Moral that allows you to move forward, that gives you the strength to move forward, and even many Magics empower your user with the power of Feelings and the same characters have said it from the beginning.

Natsu uses emotional Fire, one that is powered by more powerful feelings, Natsu that must be someone emotional from the beginning or otherwise his strength would be limited.

Lucy's magic comes from love, and the spirits say it, the greater the love she has for the Spirits, the more powerful they will be.

Juvia depends a lot on emotions to enhance her power, the greater her Feelings the more powerful she will be and we have seen that in her fights.

Erza clearly is a woman whose feelings allow her to move forward, if these are low her power is limited, but when she begins to think about her family, she nourishes her motivation with her emotions and feelings so that her magic increases.

You point, if I may piggy back off of, couples with stamina as it pertains to PoF

Natsu for example, by the end of the manga just kept going and going with no examination as to how.

In Naruto, Naruto was shown receiving chakra from outside sources constantly.

In DBZ Even Goku needs to rest between fights

But Natsu kept going with no explaination and the only thing we can get from that was that his emotions kept him going, but for over 100 chapters? Several of the highest tier wizards, A demon tumor, and a Dragon King... Without a serious pause our getting healed. It was bad... BAD writing even with preestablished PoF powerups.
