This thread is for Ray's character discussion, and theories/predictions you might have for him.
Ray is known as "the encyclopedia" as he's often seen reading books, and is very intelligent. His logical reasoning can be considered a weakness, as he can give up rather easily should the odds not favour him.
His perceptive abilities are incredibly high, as well as his strategic prowess. This combo allowed him to not only become an spy for Mama, but also gain information about the outside world by requesting compensation for his spy duties.
I find him to be more interesting than Emma or Norman, because he's not as easy to read, and possibly could backstab them (though I find this very unlikely since his own number will be called eventually). I do believe that Ray actually likes Emma just as Norman does.
Ray is doing the classic "pulling pigtails" with Emma. I think he just respects Norman's obvious feelings too much to show any sort of romantic affection openly.
My favourite character so far. He's calculating everything with his head and heart cool. He's not affraid of more determined actions, like when he and Norman were checking, if they would be able to backstab Krone. He will be cold bastard once he'll grow up (IF he will grow up ). From the main trio he's the one who keeps both feet on the ground imo. I wonder if his acting skills will be enough to mislead Isabella, who is yet to make her move. Also, he's definitely not acting like 11 yo kid, he's way more mature than his peers, and though it disturbs me a bit, I don't consider it as such a big flaw of the series (but maybe I'm just biased, because I love this guy since the very beginning).

It has accelerated his growh and made him who he is now with no doubts But even back than, when he made a deal with Mama, his maturity and calmness was perceptible. Other kids would panic for sure, but he just took an opportunity and prepare for the future escape. Too bad, that boys can't be mamas, he would be most suitable candidate for Isabella's successor
I love him, but I so don´t trust him.
I DO HOPE he doesn´t betray them, I feel his more logical and cold aways are in very good contrast to Enma´s idealistic and Norman´s middle ground mentalities
He's not a bad character, but somehow I feel as if he's being written a LITTLE too predictably for my taste. Especially when it was obvious he was the spy (even tho the reveal was masterfully executed). I think Ray needs to be humanized a little more for me to really enjoy him as a character, because as it stands right now, he's sort of a 'perfect' character in a way. He doesn't have any flaws/weaknesses that make it easier to relate to him.
Oh, and he definitely will end up developing feelings for Emma. They might be there already, or it's something that will develop down the road, but I think that something will come out of this
It´s not just the secret, but in his genes, as well, we´ve seen this with young kids like Phil and with Isabella´s statements to Krone, the kids in her farm are "top quality", I assume knowing the secret forced him to prepare for the plan + having to tell the secret to others and have them believe it, under the pretext of the pressure of death, but he was already quite inteligent without that, though it makes me wonder how long did Ray take to talk to mama about being a spy, was it straight up on the day after finding out, or did he take his time? I cant remember this part very well. It´s clearly the secret that made him adopt his "logical only" methodology.

I dont think, I would like this, it could make emma look manipulative and we already saw with Norman just how manipulative emma can be with him, without she even trying anything!
Ray should remain pro-Ray at least, until the kids find any sort of ground to stand on, until then his logical thinking, is a must have.

Ray having all his childhood memories in tact was a great reveal. Shouldering the burden of knowing the truth about the "Orphanage" could not have been easy for a 6 year old. Watching so many of the kids go to their deaths must have been heartbreaking, so I understand better why he's a bit cold. He seems to be the classic martyr type.
If there was going to be a sacrifice I think he expected it to be him. His whole plan seemed centered on saving Norman and Emma. Quite a few times he's mentioned all of them (well 5 of them) escaping, but I think his intentions have slipped out a few times. Like this for example.
The way he emphasized "you two" instead of saying "us" seemed to me like he just really wants to save his best friends at all costs.

I can understand why Ray feels hopeless. I think he doesn't really treasure his own life as much as Norman and Emma's. He watched many of his siblings go to their deaths, and he even sent at least one to an early death experimenting with the trackers. And now apparently his effort was in vain.
I don't think it's something quite that simple.
For Ray, someone who's pretty much known the secret of the orphanage ever since he was a kid, I think in a way, he was sort of resigned to living life like that, until of course, he came across Norman and Emma.
These 2 were people who like him, had also been content with living that way, until of course Ray egged them on to find out what happened to Connie. I think he saw a little of himself in both Norman and Emma, so he decided that if there was anyone who was going to break free from the normal life that he and the others had been accustomed to, it was going to be those 2.
Watching many of his siblings go to their death isn't something that should affect him much, seeing that he nevr really made it a point to socialize with the other kids.Notice how he always alienated himself and kept a distance away from the rest?
Man, he's really exhausted, this panel sums up his feeling.
I know he's known to give up early, but seriously he's the most hardworker among the trio, endured all these years and in the end everything was in vain. I liked that he decided to give up because, i like characters that know their limit, because it makes them realistic and relatable.
Someone compared his character to Killua, i have to agree, this is why both of them are my favorites in both series. They know their limit and capabilities, what they can do and what they can't. And when they team up with characters with over ambitious like Gon and Emma is when they shine the most, because they are both two sides of the same coin and compliment each other. And that's probably the reason he will stick around with Emma. I am really excited their adventure.
Alright, so with the most recent chapter involving a tragedy with Ray, I see two possible ways that he can survive. And that will decide his fate in remaining a protagonist, or becoming an antagonist
I'll start with him becoming an protagonist:
-So basically, after this chapter, that ended with the explosion, Emma will be bawling her eyes out at Ray's death. Don and Gilda will show up and escape the orphanage with her in tow. At the end of the next chapter, we'll see a new character. His name is......Dragon The leader of the Human Resistance in The Promised Neverland He managed to save Ray in time from the fire, but not before telling him how much he hated the demons.
-After the accident however, there's an issue with Ray. He gets amnesia, and forgets all of his siblings at the orphanage Norman and Emma too.
-Norman resurfaced later on, and reunited with Emma
-But he's killed later by the Magma Demon, and dies protecting Emma. This happened during the events of Tifari, which ended up being a wide scale war that engulfed humans and demons alike.
-This event hits the news massively, as Norman was one of the major players on the human's side. One day, Ray, who's in the Revolution Camp, catches wind of this, and the news triggers his memories, so he ends up remembering everything that happened in his past.
-After learning the truth, however, Ray decides to embark to Demonrosa, where a Colosseum is being held by the String Demon. They have Norman's brain (turns out the demons harvest human brains before eating them). Emma also learned of this, so she decided to go to the site. Of course, this is how the two reunite.
And there you have it folks
As for him becoming an antagonist :
-The flames will injure him massively, and he'll end up with second degree burns. This only fuels his hate for the demons and Isabella more, so he decides to go solo from that point onward, under the alias....Makoto Shishio
Saw the Raws (won't read the chapter til next week).
How can Ray not die? I'm not a medical expert by any means, but can someone live through that? And if so, would they be able to escape an orphanage as a 12 year old that day? If he lives, he's going to a hospital and then a demons dinner plate imo.
Demons/HQ will be on alert straight away since his sensor (in the ear) should at least be melted/damaged. Isabella and Grandma both culpable here.
On a character note, what Ray did was tragic. After so many years being burdened with the knowledge of his reality, and then losing Norman; and now sacrifices himself to help Emma and co... Damn. I truly hope that his death is recapped through his introspection. But if there's none, then I'll assume he'll live tbh.
If this manga is going to last Assassination Classroom length (170-180 chapters), i won't mind Ray dying now, but if the author's planning to go beyond 200+, killing such a character with crazy potential for shock value is really waste, so i still keep believing that he'll live (but with a crazy damage), plus we're in the future, it's likely they have great techs for medical, so fingers crossed.
