Re: Mangahelpers awards / Durarara (ep17) // Koenosaki vs Kiraboshi (Riki, Nuno) ~ Who's next?

Well I just finished episode 9, where much of it revolved around Vino aka Rail Tracer. So I'm understanding a lot more now, especially after episode 8 when the "flashback" occured. I'm impressed with the writing of the series.

So what's these extra episodes for? Are they part of the canon material? And why three? I thought there were 12 episodes + 3 extra = 15. But I have 16 episodes total.
Yep, the writing of the series is great. I like DRRR a lot but in those 17 episodes I have watched, it couldn't topple the baccano vibe I had. This is probably due to the setting ('30s iirc and the alchemist aspect)... then again, comparing is futile since they are different

The extra episodes have a connection with what happened during the 12 episodes of Baccano. Those three extra episodes were great because it gave the baccano vibe back when the series ended.

Dunno about the amount 16

edit: 13 episodes + 3 extra episodes

I'll have to disagree about Baccano vs DRRR. I've watched episode 13 now, I've yet to watch the extras, maybe they will change my mind, maybe they won't. But I didn't build up the same hype with this series. It was a great watch, don't get me wrong. But I felt like there was something missing, mainly main characters that you build up care for. What kept me interested was basically Rail Tracer, which I find to be the coolest and most interesting character in the series. I wanted to know what the hell was going on on the Flying Pussyfoot. Aside from that I wanted to know what would happen to the whole Immortal deal. The latter dissapointed me, I felt like the ending left me with many questions and few answers. Szilard's death was a given, but aside from that I felt like the mysteries around the Immortals was left unfinished. One can argue that answers may come in a second season but who knows. All in all even if the series was great, my main problem with it is that I didn't care at all about any of the characters. Firo was probably the only one I would have cared slightly about, aside from Rail Tracer whom I obviously wouldn't have liked dying.

Cast wise Baccano and DRRR aren't very different in terms of quantity. The difference is basically that DRRR has a set of core main characters that you build up care for, and even the supporting characters like Shizuo, Celty etc are easy to sympathize with. Maybe this is better covered in the novel version of Baccano, and it should be said that the anime was fairly short, and the extra episodes may help. Even so I think DRRR was a better told story, even if the plot in Baccano was greater than DRRR's. I guess Baccano's weakness was that the great plot made it almost impossible to really have a "main character" and make the story build around him/her.

I think this is a matter because you watched DRRR first, while I watched Baccano first. I do regret that Baccano never had the same amount of episodes like DRRR had. You can feel that when watching the anime. The dialogues and story telling in Baccano are way faster than DRRR. I was more confused when watching Baccano instead of DRRR... DRRR is more on spot and clear than Baccano

However, kinda like I said, it is the setting Nuno... You can't blame me that I like the '30s, gangster, America, alchemist setting more than DRRR's setting. I do have to say that DRRR amazes me a lot because it succeeds in keeping my attention in a present, quite realistic - shizuo's power and headless celty aside - setting. DRRR is also more surprising because of how things are handled in the story.

I really can't compare them. You can clearly feel that they are written by the same novelist but the production of the novels were handled totally different. Baccano is like the word it says, a ruckus... More mosaic, a heavy confusing ruckus which ends all together very good. I like the ruckus aspect a lot

koen do you really think psyren is that good? For me it sometimes a series of chapters could be great, but other times really boring or just unsatisfying:( also i didnt like that it seemed to take several or more of its concepts from other manga..

I've never really talked about my beef with psyren on MH before and I know your a fan so I wanted your input on it.

The most honest answer I can come up with: Psyren is good because I am a fanboy...

I liked Mieru Hito a lot too. It was a shorter manga by the same mangaka. I was thus very happy when Psyren was introduced. I do not neglect the mainstream elements, the fact that it had awful plot elements, etc but like my football (well soccer) team I can not dislike it even if it has bad elements :)

I did nothing but play UNO when I wasn't skiing on by holiday trip a few weeks ago. I have proof if I take a screenshot of the many videos we made. If I know the commands in IRC, I'll beat anyone.

I haven't really been practicing and I don't know who your minions are... Just thought it sounded cool... But I'm up for a round or two later against the one and only Koen - King of Uno. :hurr

Well, king of Uno is a compliment with a lot of pressure. Call me just good at it.

But tbh, before I played UNO on irc with MH staff, I think I played it less than 15 times in RL

Do you really want to know why I am very good at UNO? and other card games?

This the reason: I have played this game from childhood and certainly during my student life. We skipped a lot of classes to play kleurenwiezen or wiezen in pub with beer etc. It is a tactical game in which you have to make a strategy beforehand. During that game, you have to change your tactics constantly. My friends find me very good in it

It sounds a lot and difficult but once you play it more then you get used to it

Not my cup of tea tbh... I don't intend to watch it further on. I am really sick of vampires and all the things around it. True blood will remain the sole exception I think
