i am right handed and i cant use the other one totally in writing and you know from 8 to 15% only are left handed for adults and it is more common in males than females (all in wikipedia)

i write with my left hand, but throw with my right arm, kick with my right leg, in cricket and softball im a right-handed batsman, would i be ambidextrous? otherwise i would say im left handed [withholds vote]

Wow. I never really thought about that. It also made me curious, so I researched it (more like looked in the handy-dandy Wikipedia site).

Here are some interesting facts:

• The rate of left-handedness appears to correlate with the amount of violence in a given society (taking homicide rates as a measure).It follows that the minority left-handed population has, historically, played a crucial role in the evolution of individual societies. The counter-conclusion—that increased violence in a society generates a larger left-handed population—is not, however, borne out by the researchers.
• Social stigma and repression of left-handedness
  • Until the latter part of the twentieth century, Roman Catholic nuns in elementary schools would punish children for using their left hand to write, typically by slapping their left hand with a ruler or ferula if they attempted to pick up a pen with it. Left-handedness was interpreted as a sign of Satanic influence, and thus prohibited.
  • A Japanese man could divorce his wife if he discovered that she was left-handed. >> Is this true? If it is, how unfair!
  • In many European languages, including English, the word for "right" (in a directional sense) also means "correct" or "proper". Throughout history, being left-handed was considered as negative - the Latin word sinistra (from which the English word "sinister" was derived, along with various Romance language derivatives) meant "left" as well as "unlucky". >> This is also applicable in our culture (I'm a Filipino ). Kaliwete, which is derived from the word kaliwa (left), means philandering or adulterous.

Wow, how did they find that out? Researchers have observed polar bears grabbing fishes with their left paws? Or perhaps the polar bears mauled scientists with their left arms?
