This episode was a short one after the info dump last week.

1. Emerald gave Cinder up so fast. Guess fear of Salem >> love/admiration of Cinder

2. Didn’t Ozpin have pretty much a war conference with Winter, Glenda, Iron and Qrow back in vol 3? Mentioning spying on Salem..... I don’t like how incompetent they are making Oz look now. On top of that, why are they taking the lamp to Atlas? Why did he want Pyrrha to become a maiden? Ever since Ozpin switched to Oscar’s body, they seem like they have wanted to erode his character. Yes, he isn’t perfect but they have always made him sit atop an underground organization of trusted people throughout the Kingdoms. Now Salem not only has her group and her Grimm but apparently potentially soldiers? Guess she isn’t too hurt that Adam didn’t bring The Faunus.

2. Qrow seems like he didn’t know the magnitude of the story but from his conversations with Raven, he should have had some inkling of the connection between Salem and Ozpin.

3. Yang? Hypocrite much? At this point, she must have told everyone about Raven off panel.

4. Guess we know why Grandma is with them... to be the adult of the group since Ozpin is gone now and Qrow is drinking more.

5. Were Weiss and Blake even in the episode?

6. Salem’s reaction was best part. She knows Ozpin is alive but shouldn’t she already have speculated he took a new body?

7. The reactions were a bit disappointing in general.... Qrow did hit Oscar. Violent reaction but felt like that went nowhere.

8. Tyrian channeling his inner Zancrow with that laugh.

9. Hazel was hyped so much previously and now is going to be Salem’s whipping boy.

10. Are they ever going to get to Atlas?

Saw the episode now

First of all I can understand the anger that Team RWBY feel especially Qrow.

Also the fear that Salem instills in her subordinates and the way she kicked Tyrian.I am thinking maybe Salem's base is in the Dragon land.

So now Cinder is going to be Salem's target.

Also that ability of Salem as seen in the intro, some somet is going to happen to Qrow.

Also the old lady stomping Yang was pretty funny.

Also that last scene reminds me of the fourth season.

Short this time I am waiting for what Salem and Ozpin reuniting.

@Crescent Jinx I facepalmed at one moment in the episode...

That Scene:
Ruby: Do you hear that?

Me: For fuck sake, Blake is literally there why Ruby hears something while someone with enhanced hearing doesn't...

About Ozpin
Tbh him building school etc. Doesn't indicate he had a plan he just wanted to slow Salem down

As I said Qrow was following him for 20 fucken years sacrificing himself but even so, him hitting Ozpin ( Oscar ) is kinda fucked up Qrow should be like " You're lucky you are inside little boy ( :P ) " and his line to Oscar and Ruby" Don't lie to him Ruby " Really Qrow...

Weiss and Blake

Yeah I'm pissed off that they just basically make them an angry addition to Ruby/Yang/Qrow/Ozpin plot... and incompetent at that " He really left us " " What are we going to do now "

Also can someone explain that logic to me

They have Relic and they all are not in the best mood

Plan???

Let us rest in the abandoned Farm that's sounds reasonable...

Maybe Ruby will be part Faunus next.... totally joke.... The writers have forgotten Blake. She is there until Adam appears or a Faunus plot reveals itself. Her and Weiss are basically cheerleaders to the other ones. They could offer their own opinions at least but they are being pushed aside.

It’s true that down deeply he may not have had an overarching plan, but he was never one to back down. Giving Pyrrha the maiden powers was probably not even to fight Salem but a way to have someone be trusted have the power. He’s always been one to maintain control. Now he doesn’t even have that. Or knowledge about what is going on currently.

As oppose to Salem who know where the next relic is that they are going to target. Plus Salem is in control of her subordinates while Ozpin is getting punched in the face by Qrow now but we also know from the opening that Jaune will beat him up too. So basically Ozpin/Oscar is going to be the member of the group that everyone gets to bully now.

It’s just a complete 180 role reversal.

As for Qrow xP, he probably had more stuff he wanted to say. None of it would have been nice. Him following Ozpin that long has always been a bit odd. Considering his attitude. Hopefully we will get to see more of their relationship.

They don't have any other option than to spend the night in that farm.

Ok, saw the episode. In short, I did not like it. In long:

why is everyone mad at ozpin? I try to put myself in their place but their reactions don't specifically make sense to me. with all the information they got from the lamp they should have had a billion more questions for ozpin. I can sort of see why qrow would punch ozpin but overall what they saw shouldn't result in the reaction we saw. Questions, some anger, a shred of understanding... And we didn't even get a justification regarding why ozpin didn't trust this knowledge to others. There was literally nothing there that says anything even remotely bad about ozpin. Everything in there portrays as ozpin as not merely the greatest hero in the history of humanity but in general a saint. Ozpin hid a few details which aren't useful to the gang?

As for the salem bit... what? Why is salem so angry at ozpin being alive? Of course he is alive. What other way could it possibly be? She reacted to the failure and she reacted to learning ozpin was back.... but her reactions should have been switched for this to make sense...

As for the tower.... it sounds a bit like branwin.... Qrow has a deathflag over his head, I wonder if this is where he dies.

As for the old lady... who is she? why is she there? It would make sense that she was only an old lady but come on....

On another note, I sort of hope the gang runs into a sort of texas chainsaw scenario next episode. They are in a farm in the middle of nowhere after all.

One of those episodes in every season when you say; "F*** ... too short!!!"
Basically a aftermath reaction episode.
  • Hostility towards Oz was a natural thing before the reveal, but this is little bit too much imo. For some reason this hostility towards him is starting to annoy me now. Yang especially. Actually no, the hostility is understadable cuz Oz was the one that made it look that way .....
  • ...... why is Oz so vulnerable, i get that he was shown something he wanted to bury, something very personal, but what happened to the wisdom, where is the plan and the hope he displayed in his dialogue with Salem in Volume 1. Where is the "a simple more honest soul that will bring victory". Or was this too cringe to explain to a bunch of dumbasses. There is no beating Salem in strenght, thats for sure, but rather than power he was saying that victory lies in simpler things. What happened with that, and what was the meaning of those words anyway.
  • Qrow i get, cuz RT made Oz a complete fool for a moment and by doing so, Qrow looked like a complete fool as well, wasted half his half for a "i dont have a plan" from Oz :neutral
  • Yang STFU you hypocrite .... sorry for this but the more shes angry the more i get annoyed, and the more i get annoyed the more i cant stand her
  • Old Granny Maria MVP, thank you granny :noworry thats how you handle it
  • Cool outside shot of Salem's HQ.
  • For some reason Tyrian i starting to grow on me lol
  • The good'ol "big evil boss getting failure news from incompetent underlings" moment. It was done cool here.
  • Salem trashing Hazel. Well done and well deserved :smile-big How stupid can you get and cover for Cinder of all people
  • Lol Em turning on Cinder, but i do get why. It was a scene well done.
  • Salem going batshit crazy after hearing that Oz reaincarnated :hmmwhy ..... she already knows this stuff. Or was she angry that his reincarnation already managed to help out the main team and stop her plans. Either way the scene itself was well done (the glass breaking was very cool)
  • Yep Sword location dropped. Its in Shade academy in Vacuo. So the Kingdom insignias are the very indication of what relic they possess. Cool.
  • Thanks for the info about the farm @Vici i did hear of Brunswick but i wasnt familiar with the tale

Everyone but Ruby and Qrow irritated me this episode. The entire team other than Ruby lacks understanding and priority. Ruby asked the one thing they should have asked and it only serves to show how immature the other 3 actually are. They seriously just get mad at things and then get mad at more things. All Yang did was complain for no reason.Seriously, she complained and refused to let Oz get out a word then got mad some more when he just decides to shut up. Ozpin has his secrets. Secrets that honestly don’t change the nature of their mission which is to defeat Salem. He has literally done nothing but fight for humankind for thousands of years and they’ve seen it.

Salem and Ozpin have been fighting for thousands of years at this point and they did love each other. I think she’s just angry at Ozpin in general and that’s her normal emotional response to him now. Similar to how Ozpin cried because of the past Jinn showed.

And I’m positive that old lady has silver eyes

hahahahahahaha..... haha....ha.......

If only..... So far I give the volume a solid C. It's an improvement over volume 5 of course but that's not a feat.

Had to rewatch a few different things to collect my thoughts here. Okay, where to begin...

That was a disappointing episode which didn't make sense in a number of ways.

First of all, like @kkck I really don't see what is so monumental with the reveals, or what it is that Oz really needs to hide. The background information and story lost to time, remaining only in myths and legends, isn't exactly anything groundbreaking. And it's not like Oz caused the mess in the first place, or could even be be construed as holding any kind of major responsibility in the matter; only that he's been given the seemingly impossible task of trying to dealing with said mess.

The reactions from the others aren't particularly fitting either. "That's it? What's the big deal?" would make more sense to me. Personally, I think an exploration of the question, "Why were you hiding such (seemingly) trivial matters from us?" would have made a more interesting exploration of Oz's character than this round of trying to make him look incompetent. Some consternation about a foe they cannot defeat I can buy, especially from kids with no experience. But how many generations have the peoples of Remnant been dealing with grimm? Unless they really were expecting that they'd be the ones to see the problem finished, and that they aren't just a piece of a much larger picture involving many more people and over many many years.

Oz not having a plan? After this long? I don't buy it. Not having found a way to destroy Salem with her immortality, I could understand. Becoming more jaded after having to deal with the problem for so long, I could understand as well. Jaded to the point of losing hope and giving up, wouldn't really match everything else we've seen of him through the series so far though. Someone with his extensive years of experience, setting up the schools, guarding the relics--you don't do all that without some sort of plan, even if it is just a matter of slowing down the other side's progress as much as possible, or safeguarding the status quo, all the while looking for the solution that hasn't been found yet. (Isn't the typical fantasy trope to seal away the undefeatable evil? Though I really hope they don't end up going down that route).

Volume 1 episode 1:
Salem: "But take heed, there will be no victory in strength."
Oz: "But perhaps victory is in the simpler things that you've long forgotten, things that require a smaller, more honest soul."

If not a plan, it at least is an indication of where Oz's thoughts are about the matter. And if that's not a reference to Ruby, I don't know what it is. As much as she may be the naive idealistic one of the group, it's not like she hasn't had her eyes opened to the "real world [that] isn't the same as a fairy tale." (Blake, v01e03), and yet she keeps on fighting still.

Volume 5 episode 5:
Ruby: "When Beacon fell, I lost two of my friends... two of the most kindhearted people I've ever met. But that didn't save them. Pyrrha though that if there was even the smallest chance of helping someone, that it was a chance worth taking, and because of that, she died fighting a battle she knew she couldn't win. ... If it had been me instead [that died], I know they would have kept fighting too, no matter how dangerous it was. So that's what I choose to do. To keep moving forward."
Ozpin inside Oscar's head: "She really is remarkable, isn't she?"

Whether that idealism will persist or not is up to the writers at this point, but it would suit me just fine if it remains (or ends up shaken but regained). Pragmatists who just live to survive, looking out for themselves and theirs (eg. Raven), don't change the world. It's those people with dreams that do, which has been seen time and time again through our own history, and oftentimes something we take for granted these days. Things don't always turn out great for those idealists either--they may end up imprisoned, executed, assassinated, etc., but what they did while they could made a difference that went beyond themselves. If Ruby does continue on that way, it may well mean things not going well for her; to what extent and how it is handled will again depend on the skill of the writers.

Stepping away from the perspective of the characters completely, what's wrong with an unwinnable fight? Do we give up merely because of that, or do we do the best that we can manage, with the hope of doing better as we learn more? How much of what we (in general) deal with in the real world is like that? Disease. Crime. Natural disasters of all sorts. They continue to come back, and we keep on dealing with them as best we can (sometimes better and sometimes worse depending on individual effort and administrative involvement, but I don't want to get into that can of worms discussion). I don't deny that some people may decide to give up over the helplessness of it all, but as a whole, we keep on fighting back. Is the Salem/grimm issue any different? What if there was no Salem and it was just the grimm were as a natural phenomenon that had to be continually contended with?

Edit: Typos, grammar

Part of the issue here is that given what we know not only ozpin does not appear to have a plan but to us viewers it is somewhat evident ozpin does have options. And he has had... thousands of years to ask questions to the relic at that.

Lets look at the situation. Ozpin was sent by the god of light to unite humanity before judgement day. And he was given the relics to aid him. And in context, even bring about said judgement day. So:

1.- Ozpin's first option is of course to do his best at what the god of light told him. While noting that the god of light in no way charged him on destroying or otherwise defeating salem.

2.- The second choice ozpin had was to simply work as hard as he could to avoid judgement day at all cost. Regardless of whether humanity was at peace or not. Reasoning something along the lines of those gods not actually having humanity's interests in mind but rather their own agenda. heck, the god of darkness obliterated humanity on a whim without a shred of mercy and the god of light did shit about it. The gods as shown are an existential threat to humanity. Obviously the best case scenario in a way would be that they return and give magic to humanity and whatnot but the risk in getting that is extinction. while noting none of this specifically implies salem has to be destroyed. Fought yes but not destroyed.

Something which I also find odd here is that the god of light appeared to ozpin but not the god of darkness. Is the god of light acting alone? why? Did.... the god of darkness appear to salem and charged her with something?

Also, this whole thing leaves more questions regarding what salem wants in the long run. We used to think her goal was to destroy humanity but... her past does not suggest that. She wanted to rule humanity as its god back in the day, not end it. So....what is salem's goal? We got plenty of clarity on ozpin but in turn salem is just that much weirder after this.

That was a seriously stupid episode. Seriously, the only saving grace of the episode was the bad guys. I can't believe I watched this nonsense.
First of all, Yang :fail She is probably the worst character in the whole volume, and that's really sad since she is my second favorite character in the whole series generally. But depending on what happens this volume she might end up getting knocked down a few notches. Where does she get off throwing a tantrum at Ozpin like that? Seriously? She's the last person who should be talking about keeping lies and secrets. Btw, that egg on her face since Raven ended up being right about Salem is so fucking delicious :lmao This solidifies Raven as one of the best characters in this series, hands down.
Qrow has done nothing but take L's ever since his introduction. Him punching Ozpin was just cringe of the highest order. But oh well, maybe this makes him stop being a lap dog for Ozpin and finally start making his own decisions. He also owes Raven an apology btw :catshrug
Salem's reaction to Ozpin reincarnating doesn't make sense after the flashback last episode. She asked Cinder whether Ozpin was dead in Volume 4, so I get why she's mad, but come on. Didn't she already know about him reincarnating. Watch her get angrier at Cinder for being unable to finish Ozpin :eyeroll

The bad guys? They were about as dumb as the others. There was no point to anything salem said or did this episode. Why even ask that of hazel? What was the point of forcing hazel to say that? It would have been reasonable for hazel to name cinder first but come on, the dude not blaming the dead person in front of his angry god of darkness is somewhat reasonable, if not expected. And then salem being angry at ozpin being alive.... Why? She knew that ozpin was coming back anyways. Or was there any reason for us to think ozpin should have returned later on?

Wait, has yang kept lies and secrets? nothing specifically comes to mind that would appear relevant in this comparison.

And I wouldn't give all that much credit to raven here. All of it would hinge on her knowing for a fact that salem is unkillable. But if she knew that then.... why in the holy hell did she not say a word to literally anyone? Not to her husband, not to her brother, not to her daughter... All she did is say stuff about a war they couldn't win. But left it ambiguous. Add to that the sheer stupidity of the verbal smackdown she got from her otherwise ignorant daughter. This doesn't solidify anything regarding raven. If she knew this then it does literally nothing to explain most of her behavior. It would make sense if for instance she told everyone and no one believed her. THEN she bails on everyone. You don't however bail before screaming until your lungs fucking bleed what you know. Raven has no idea of what she is doing. And even then, raven is a god damn cold blooded murderer. Her learning salem's nature does not justify her returning to her worthless life as a bandit.

That said, how about some speculation regarding the relics? We have 4 of them and the one we know is absolutely amazing. I wouldn't be surprised if the relic of knowledge was, in its way, the most powerful of all.

So we have the relic of choice, creation and destruction... The relic of knowledge was fairly simple. It gives you knowledge though with a limit. In that sense it makes sense that they other functions give you choice, creation and destruction though with some limit there. As in the amount of uses or something to that effect.

No idea of what choice the relic of choice could allow. Maybe change the past somehow? Or allow you to control someone? This one baffles me but I get the impression it is going to be a particularly important relic. If ozpin has used it... then what choice has he made?

Creation... Create something? Life maybe? It sounds like a bit too much.

Destruction... This one seems to be the least interesting at least. Maybe it gives the user generic power for a time. Or it can destroy anything the user chooses. Much like how the god of darkness annihilated humanity.

The creation and destruction bit is also interesting in that they match what the gods attributed themselves with.

anyways, finally what strikes me as weird here is that at least two relics seem to have at least the possibility of reviving someone... Phyrra anyone? The GoL is a bit twisted and has an agenda so I wouldn't be THAT surprised if the choice here was to revive someone.... at the cost of your own life. A way to keep the balance so to speak.

The entire episode was pretty stupid. Yang only has two emotions and it’s annoying. She’s all angst and anger all the time.Unless it’s about her mother.

And Yang and Qrow owe nothing to Raven. Nothing about Ozpin changes what still needs to be done or the fact that she’s a coward and a quitter. Yang was right. Rwby still has every intention on fighting her because she needs to be stopped.Raven isn’t some intelligent thinker who was ahead of the curve. She didn’t stick with Ozpin for the exact reason he keeps his mouth shut, fear of Salem drives people away. So no she’s still wrong. Everything she does is because she’s terrified of Salem. Literally everything we’ve seen from her. She gave up the relic out of fear of Salem. Worked with Cinder and lied about the Maiden out of fear of Salem. Doesn’t work with Ozpin out of fear of Salem. She’s just a coward wrapped in a tough exterior.

The main issue I have with raven is that we are supposed to conciliate her being one of the top huntresses in the series, and then her being the second strongest person in the series, with the fact that she is unbelievably cowardly. Cowardly to the point that her actions don't really have any sort of coherence with one another. nothing she has ever done in this series makes a shred of sense in any form or context.

That moment.. that fucking verbal smackdown... The series had it so as to show how an emotional moment where yang realizes the sort of person raven is. But those fucking questions.. "which is it? Are you merciful or are you a survivor? Did you let me walk into that trap because you knew I could handle it or because then you could get what you wanted?".Whatever the current writers envisioned for this moment, it did not work out. This moment is so unapologetically terrible in so many ways it seems intentional. I see that and I have to wonder if the writers are actually asking the audience what to fucking do with raven. Almost a cry for help... Raven isn't even a bad character, she is the worst character. She is just a sad plot device that acts incoherently to move the story in directions that otherwise make no sense. Heck, the writing in this show at times gets so bad that I wouldn't even be surprised if it turns out raven doesn't even know salem is immortal. I mean, at the moment I am assuming she knows salem is immortal and said knowledge straight up fried her brain to the point where she abandoned her loving family without telling tai or qrow that salem literally cannot be killed to return to her shitty life as a murderous thief in deep in some shitty woods. But if she doesn't knows salem is immortal then.... she did all of that without knowing salem couldn't be killed.

Yeah having Yang point out her hypocrisy when her character is one big contradiction wasn’t smart
