Jaune does tell that Crocea Mors, which is his sword, was passed down from the Great War 80 yeas ago. I doubt Ozpin was sleeping during that period. He was clearly at the center. Salem could be Ozpin’s Cora (if anyone watched the early seasons of OUAT before it went to sh***) and that have some affect on what happened in the Great War, which causes their falling out.

Ah, something else that seems dumb.... Cinder freaking punched her way out of the cave. I can buy her falling into the lake, its a shitty move to make that thing nowhere near as deep as it appeared though, but her merely punching her way out is beyond asinine. The relic is of course hidden behind a magical door but what even is the point of the elevator if its otherwise so laughably easy to access?

Also... cinder being human is quite the development. Of course she has a relationship with the god of dark or whatnot but if she is human then the implication is that the relationship is much newer than I honestly thought. Salem could be but a couple hundred years old. In my mind she was sort of the origin of grim but we just might learn that grim preceded her and she was somehow turned.

I do wonder if perhaps it was too early for this particular information dump. One thing that remains constant across all series is that once its big lore secrets are revealed the quality simply drops. Rwby already had a lot of issues when it comes to animation, the drop in fighting choreography quality and even the writers abject incompetence at even the most basic forms of coherent, let alone even passably decent, storytelling.... Can this series survives telling us one of its most important secrets? I enjoy a good old fashion info dump as much as the next guy but to me it would have made sense to hold on to this a bit longer.

Holy shit this is brilliant you mad man
In regards to the episode, I am honestly extremely happy about Cinder being alive. She is the most interesting character in the show imo, and her storylines are always the most exciting to follow. I think it was a mistake making her Salem's subordinate, she should have operated independently like what Roman and Neo were doing. Now that she's not loyal to Salem anymore her charm as a character is going to resurface. But does she still have her Maiden powers?
And.....I was reminded of the biggest reason I am not into Qrow like anyone else. The man is a lap dog for Ozpin, and it's infuriating how he follows him blindly without making his own decisions Between the Branwen twins Raven is the one who has the right idea about Ozpin. That man cannot be trusted. He has the good of all mankind at heart, but this is a Dumbledore Deathly Hallows situation all over again. The scene where Team RWBY stepped in to defend Ruby from Ozpin was a massive highlight of the episode.

The cinder one is actually good as well. "Imagine thinking the girl who can fly with fire powers died from freezing and falling". To be fair, its completely reasonable for cinder to die from an irony overdose. It happens to the best. Perhaps even only to the best. But of course, cinder's strategy last volume was to waste her advantage and literally walk away from an otherwise laughably easy fight. OMG VOLUME 5 FLASHBACKS! MAKE THEM STOP! THE STUPIDITY HURTS! THE DIALOGUE BURNS! WHERE IS BLAKE WHO IS THIS WEIRD ALIEN THAT REPLACED HER!? ANYTHING BUT VOLUME 5! I'LL TAKE EVEN VOLUME 4 BUT PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!

Ehem, anyways, I could buy cinder surviving but I need a better explanation than we got. Like, say, bursting out of the ice using a crapton of fire. The scene with her waking up underwater is pretty good but wasted in the overall situation.

It's obviously the latter. She had a chance to get her hands on a relic plus the Spring Maidens power, and failed hard at that. No way she can safely return to Salem. But it is entirely possible that their relationship is beyond repair now, hence Cinder might act completely on her own.
