The problem is you need to have the connections between him and other minions/villains in order to make him an effective "big bad". And I think that's where Shirigaki really fails for me. Because why would anyone fight for him or with him?
you know, i agree overall (even though i was starting to enjoy him more just because his fights are now better), but i disagree on that last point. horikoshi has worked tirelessly to show us that the reason the league is still together (instead of splintering) is basically bc they're outcasts who all (deep-down) wanted companionship (except dabi, who has his own motives and the league is the strongest force of evil at the moment), so basically that's why they're fighting for/with him.
i don't think every big bad has to be aizen (who led by strength) or DIO (whose charisma and literal mind-control got him followers), it's ok to have your Nagato/Pain where i'm really not sure why sasori or most of the akatsuki joined the akatsuki. shigaraki took advantage of stain (and had kurogiri and others working overtime to recruit and bring ppl in) and has had a stable group since they like that he's generally hands-off and lets them do their thing, but also cares about them in his own way and definitely works to avenge them when necessary.

Yeah, even that doesn't really work for me. Because there is a leap of logic there.
Stain's internal logic as a villain was that all heroes except Almight were fakes and that he exposing them as such right? In his mind he was tearing down pretenders. So he admired the concept of a hero. But hated that people took on that label who were, in his view, unworthy of it. And any hero who couldn't beat him was unworthy of it therefor deserved to be punished. He saw himself as ripping a facade away from a failed system. He wanted to kill villains just as much as heroes too. The thing that would inspire copycats about Stain is that reformist element.
The gap between him and Shigaraki that has never been addressed is that Shigaraki does not have a similar element. He's celebrating the villain side as if being a villain is his "ideal". Which makes no more sense in the context of characters Himiko and Twice than it does for characters like Dabi.
They're violent reformists that think hero society isn't good enough. They were not ideologically pro-villain at all. The reason they stick with Shigaraki, honestly, is that the the plot needs them to. The only thing that really works for me there are the bonds of the characters that worked together like Himiko and Twice. There is really very little reason for them to follow his lead.

The latest stuff with Himiko is sort of indictment of Shigaraki because how much more interesting she becomes if she turns around and betrays him then strikes out on her own? She would instantly become like 10x more interesting right?
The story tries to justify the league sticking to shigaraki basically by trying to, somewhat ineffectively, twist the whole "power of friendship" thing. That almost works for himiko and twice, who are mentally ill people with a rather loose grasp of reality. But it doesn't really work/apply to the rest of the league.
Take dabi... no twisted POF whatsoever on his end. I suppose dabi is one of the league's members that so far makes the most sense, he is in it because it suits him and its fairly clear to us readers he doesn't care about league members personally.
Spinner... is a weird case. Him being in it for the friendship to some extent makes sense given his background but on the other hand he seems to be one of the league's most stain devoted members. So him sticking by the league even during machia's bulldozing, let alone after it, doesn't exactly check out. It's like the manga doesn't care about whether spinner/stain literally or figuratively destroy society. To shigaraki said distinction would be meaningless of course but it shouldn't be to spinner...

It's stupid the narrative and fans try to push the idea that the league are bunch of friends that stick together with shigaraki non existent charisma. It makes no sense why any of the should stick together and would have been better as sole villains.
