I can smell the copium fan fiction and death threats. But in all seriousness honestly again this ending isn’t awful at least compared to a lot of shonen manga imo but I already know a ton of people will disagree. Was an incredible ride but I strongly hope the anime has an alternate ending (worst case scenario we get a neverland season 2 situation). Also, where is the “you are free” page? Pls tell me that is at least in the chapter.

And now I’m crying. Thanks for the incredible story Isayama. It’s been an absolute pleasure reading your work all these years.

side note; I will agree this isn’t the ending he had in mind. Chapter looks good but this reminds me heavily of the whole Tokyo Ghoul treatment.

This chapter is better yes, but they both share the same result of feeling like it’s opposite of how the author wanted it to end and a stray from the previous chapters. TG wouldn’t have been nearly as been if there had been 2 more chapters before it explaining everything that happened in the last and this one would feel more complete if we saw a bit more of a resolution. We don’t have translations yet but from the scans I feel like they changed what Isayama was originally set to do and the pacing of the 4/5 previous chapters

Is it just because of supposed last panel with a baby?

No, I never took that really into regard when it was released some years ago.

Long time lurker here. I just wanted to say what I thought at least for the last chapter as a farewell to SnK.

The first thing I liked is that this ending didn't came out of nowhere. Eren Kruger telling Grisha to find love in order to not repeat the mistakes from the past when his memories got mixed up with Eren's, Eren saying that it is Armin who would save humanity, Eren's memory shard in chapter 130 of Bertholdt from Dina's point of view.

There are plenty of things that are good, but it felt kinda rushed. Ymir's linked to Fritz is understandable, it's textbook stockholm syndrome, it also explains why the Rumbling stopped when Zeke died : she was still linked to the royal family.
It's kind of a letdown to not know how exactly Mikasa "saved" Ymir, it's just ... there.

An explanation about the things surrounding paths would be good, Ymir "created" paths according to Zeke, so she can destroy it but what about the worm ?

The best thing imo, is the irony of Eren, he is all about freedom, but having seen a future that cannot change he confessed himself that this messed him up. Not surprising, because it basically questions his free will.

This also explained why he lied to Mikasa about the whole Ackerman story, and also why he was mad at Armin when he called him a slave.

Well, from what I see and what was leaked, I think it will probably get a 5/10, barely passable. There are some very good things, and there are sole pretty bad things:

Good things:

-We finally find out wtf was Ymir's reason to be stuck in here and why what she saw last chapter made her smile. It may seem unsatisfactory because it could have been something deeper, but strong Stockholm syndrome does make sense. It makes sense that just like she loved bastard Fritz while he clearly used her she can empathize with Mikasa, who clearly loved Eren while he ignored her, and seing her kill the man she loved because he was doing something terrible may have inspired her to finally move on (the last we heard from Bastard Fritz was "make sure you inherit Ymir's power, as long as my descendants have this power blah blah blah, so removing the powers from all current Eldians is Ymir breaking free from that order).

-Paradis looked in the verge of an internal civil war, and this seems to still be happening. It'll be several years of internal conflict, probably, and it makes sense it's not solved magically.

-Eren manipulating Dina to eat Carla was something that sounded pretty terrible to me when I first read the theory due to that memory shard... But it does make sense. Eren would remember this titan's face clearly, then he would see her in Grisha's memories, and he would know what was the key to use the founder power and bypass the Pacifist vow. Dina also didn't eat Carla directly: first she killed her, and then she ate her: this might have been Eren giving a small mercy to her

-Levi's farewell to his fallen comrades and the smiling Sasha appearing to Jean and Connie were perfect panels.

- The final pages of Mikasa near the small grave look pretty heartwrenching.

The bad stuff:

- Eren has apparently always loved Mikasa but he didn't have the balls to do anything about it, and now that he's going to die he is bitching about how he wishes she would always love him? Fuck you, you little selfish prick.

- Historia's baby plot seems to amount to nothing much. Why that big deal with the conversation between Eren and Historia? I guess the daughter was purely there for symbolic value

- The warriors have gotten off pretty well after all the shit they did. I expected Eren to die because mass genocide should not be rewarded with happily ever after, but Annie in particular has both her father and a partner after having been quite the cold psycho. Reiner at least suffered heavily to the point of wanting to kill himself, but her...

Ending was okay, all things considered.
A complete downer ending (especially with people like Gabi dying) would've honestly messed up the thematic weigth of the story, aside from also leaving a bad taste. And thankfully we were also spared even heavier timetravel/futuresight bullshit.

Overall a great modern classic of a series that took a lot of interesting risks, was exciting to follow and even mostly stuck to the landing, with a few dents. That's more than a lot of other long-runners can say.

This ^ !!
Yeah to me it's still amazing to find those "bits" of the puzzle in previous chapters, how this ending isn't really something forced and rushed, but was already grounded on previous things dropped in the story. I personally love it when people pinpoint them, it makes me see how intricate the series is and how ahead Isayama was thinking when he was inserting some panels and wording there. The reason why I don't think we're lacking responses per se, but more like missing some of them.

It's kind of a letdown to not know how exactly Mikasa "saved" Ymir, it's just ... there.
I understood that Mikasa was the key 'cause she killed Eren, after she freed her from the founder's will. Ymir smiled in the last panel when Mikasa severed Eren's head. I don't have the whole mechanic reasonably put in my head tho, I'll admit.

The best thing imo, is the irony of Eren, he is all about freedom, but having seen a future that cannot change he confessed himself that this messed him up. Not surprising, because it basically questions his free will.
Awnnnn, wouldn't call it "best". Wasn't fond of that, actually... the guy that was so driven by his ideal of freedom ended up as a fate puppet... Fine, we can get a message of "in the end, you can't fight against your destiny", but that's rather depressing and Eren's course was quite cruel.

Oh... so when people mentioned that staring bird in the boat (when Armin was talking to Annie)... it wasn't there in vain, indeed.
It's something we could have imagined (well, prolly someone did), that Eren had already talked to them, actually but wiped the memories after.
Shame, looks like the fan translation isn't complete, tho.

I just used the spoiler tag, just so I don't clog up the thread. Tl;dr, this post is boring and not worth reading. Just some rambling that I need to get off my chest.

Last thought, lately I googled around, and found it is so funny that especially how western media used Attack on Titans to portray a political agenda. The Eldians are substitute for Jews, for Nazis, for Japanese nationalists, to Hong Kong protestors. But usually because these articles are American centric and only able to think in term of America, they somehow mostly concluded blah blah blah white nationalism (doesn't matter what their original premises were).

Hajime Isayama build up stakes so quickly every subsequence story arcs, to the point, that I thought he wrote himself into a corner multiple times. But he didn't, however, doing so he just move that corner a bit further further away. And it accumulate to this. The central problem of story is semi solved but not really. And I doubt anyone including the author would have an answer for something like world peace. For a bit, I thought is this going the route of Code Geass and Watchmen. But I think we sort of know his opinion about that conclusion. A common enemy (the Eldians) to unite the world. And the author kinda saying it won't work, and it is afterall the driving narrative.

Eren went through a bit of a depression before the timeskipped/basement. He was temporarily cured through his mother's words that existence, by itself, is special (kinda remind me of the Robin/Franky arc in One Piece). Ymir, the titans, Eren, the Eldians had a right to exist even if it brought conflict to the majority. Though, he took it to the extreme and denied others of that same right to exist. But as long as there are differences (even among just the normal humans, or just among the Eldians) breeds individualism/tribalism. And with it brought conflict. I think the manga did a thought experiment that Sam Harris did. Though since he use real life examples and that can bring consequences, people chastised him for it. And that revolved about nuclear first strike if nuclear weapons fell to the enemies. Or even Bush's preemptive war. And not just any enemies, enemies that are so different than us. Enemies that we think (rightly or wrongly) don't share the same values about life. The mainlanders didn't try to understand/empathize with the Eldians, or the people living on Paradis island. (Though the author sort of made a commentary on this through the last moment of Marco). And so they and also Eren justified the nuclear first strike to their enemies. And funny enough, both sides mutter blah blah blah about world peace. Is world peace accomplish when everyone are the same, of the same mind, with no differences. Hive mind, no freedom, just the collective. Because you have to keep killing and killing and killing in the name of peace.

I wrote on another site about Eren's freedom. My point was that Eren, of all the characters, are the least free. I, myself, some of the time think that we are bounded by one thing or another to prevent true freedom. Whether they are laws, society, culture (norms), religions. To love, friendship, and relationship. Even if you are able to denied all of that. You still bounded by biological factors and environmental factors that you had no control over . You still subject to thirst, hunger, pain, survival, and sometimes breeding instinct. Chemicals in your brain. You don't chose your parents, or where you were born, the era in which you are born in, or even how you look. You don't chose how others treat you. But that in turned shaped your personality, belief, values. None of which you really have true freedom to choose. Since all of that influenced by biological factors or environmental factors in which you had no control over. So freewill is but an illusion. But even without true freewill, there are meaning in existence, in memories, in experiences of the past, of the moment (Armin and Zeke discussion).

Fate/Determinism. I do think once upon a time, the world may just had one linear path. When there are no life. Every non living things are ruled by mathematic and physics. But since life began, I think even with or without freewill. Randomness is introduced into the equation. Thus if there are such thing as other reality. This is where it should stemmed from.

Ironically, like I said Eren is the least free. He is the most subjected to his nature, and to relationships, and to identities. Even if the author used the Game of Thrones's greensight, to me I don't think the ink was dried. (Sidenote, do anybody know what Isayama's opinion of season 8). If Grisha can see some immediate future, then he doesn't really need to make the choices that he make. At least, he could moved his family to a safer area. Or he doesn't even need to fed himself to Eren. It felt to me that most of Eren's friends are way more flexible in their choices through out the story. At least way more than Eren. Eren saw the future, and then basically made all of the choices to get to that same future. Did he even see the end of it, I wonder? But he can't because when he died there are no Attack Titan. And I don't even know what reasons Ymir had to go with Eren's plans. And at the end of the day, she isn't even wise, especially since she subjected to stockholm syndrome and never able to break free of for 2000 years.

I wish, if there no backlash. If people are not cringe to thought experiment. Or think of something as taboo or unspeakable. I do want to know Isayama's true ending then. How he answer the questions that he set up when he isn't constraint by society, morals, readership, publishers, so on and so forth. I guess some of his answers are there. Isayama sort of write himself into the corner. But that corner is reality, human's nature, and I guess the lack of imagination (for now) of humanity.

I am fine with the ending per se. Are there things that I would change? Probably yes, especially about Eren.
Comparing it to other long-lasting shonen, I think it is above average,

I feel that the biggest issue in these final chapters is the pacing. I do not think ending with 139=13 + 9 (I would assume it was done on purpose) was really necessary honestly. I would have ended this chapter with the lifting of the curse (I got it right! :-) ) and concentrared on everything else in a new chapter.

Given that the final volume will contain five chapters instead of the usual four, I also doubt we will get much (if any) extra content.
It would be a pity if it was the case. I really wanted to know more about the lives of the characters afterwards.
I would be ok with a short spin-off, but only if Isayama at least writes it.

If only Isayama didn't decide his 139 chapters bullshit, he could have ended the story better.

As for the ending, it sticked to the theme of AOT, I'd say it was a 7/10-7.5/10 ending.

The conflict still exists, only being given a new canvas to build upon, being built upon ungodly amounts of bodies and broken dreams..

The price of ones dreams and tragedy of life.

Due to how indifferent Eren was during the whole timeskip and how mad he got at Hange, asking to tell him a different path, it was painfullt obvious that he had something hidden.

A man who had powers of a God is shackled by his earthly desires and human emotions.
He could have controlled everything to a T, but he would have taken the thing he values the most - freedom, from his friends.
He gave up his freedom in order to give his friends, loved ones it, or at the very least the freedom to carry out their own paths.

Eren died for the sins of the Eldians, both physically and mentally, having his dreams and desires killed and dying emotionally before his imminent death..

The world of the Paths, where everything is controlled, where everything conjures in a single point of origin, where beings are being held by earthly shackles, a place beyond time..
Knowing how there is a theory for what consciousness truly is, having read on religion..this manga, for me, is immensily significant, as it simbolises existence itself. Especially how everything is being controlled from a single point, single consciousness, which transcends time, just how it is being depicted what "God" is and how "it" experiences life...

Universal law of Order and Chaos, the true price for everything, karmatic justice..

Just how much did Isayama actually know before writing?

Not sure what to think of the ending. I really liked that the themes are followed while the resolution to most of the character's arcs are done justice. My two single complaints are that we don't exactly know what happens with the worm-like creature (did it die offscreen? was it releasing the titanizing gas its last struggle before it died?) and Historia's pregnancy subplot. This one is specially egregious because it seemed like the payoff would be huge, but when one thinks about it didn't have much of a point. My opinion isn't linear and I might change it the more I think about it, but I think this sort of story deserved a more grand ending.
