This. Isayama really suggested the whole deal with Annie for the anime!? T^T. I knew it. pfffft.
But since I can't really understand Japanese correctly...I didn't understood the rest...
I'm gonna put most of the post here just in case:

質問が多いようなのでお答えしますと
アニメの２３話での、「アニのリアクション」は
僕が提案させていただきました

アニが正体を自白するシーンは
単行本が世に出た後でも、もっとこうしたかったという
心残りが強くあったので、こんな風に提案させていただきました↓

「僕は、原作の感じが好きなんですけど．．．」
と言っていただいてた監督に、こんなラフを送っちゃっいまして

しかし．．．自分で描いた提案のラフをあらためて見ると
かなり無茶なことを描いてるな

「悲しく」・「照れて」・「開放感」があって
「罪悪感」と「孤独」と「恐れ」が入り混じった表情とか．．．
イヤ．．．なんという無茶ぶり．．．

要するに、アニにはあそこで素になるべきだと思ったのです
あれだけのことをやった怪物の正体が
ただの悪い奴に見えるのではなく
「普通の人間」だったって感じにしたかったんです

その上で、アニメは絵も演出も演技も

超　よかったです！！

徐々に緊迫していくシーンは、イメージ道理で
軽くお腹が痛くなったぐらいです



あと、前半のオリジナルシーンも好きです
セリフも、マルロの体験を通した上での
セリフになっているので、原作のようにただ突っ立って
しゃべってるより、説得力があって豪華でしょう

それに、マルロが見下してたアニやヒッチに
助けてもらうことによって、より挫折感が大きくなる
って所も好きです

Anyone who finds it interesting could maybe write something about the duality that exist within many characters in SnK.


Reiner --- Warrior mode, Soldier mode (also something related to his possibly changing sexuality as discussed in another thread.)

Annie --- Normal girl mode (teaching Eren how to fight, teaching Eren how to talk to girls,) Warrior with big task at hand

Hanji --- Glasses mode (fun-going, helps elevate mood between characters), non-glasses mode (serious, almost killing Nick in a rage)

Christa --- Caring girl upfront, Selfish motivation behind

Sasha --- Polite language mode (shy, cowardly, weak to people's comments eg. Ymir poking fun of her,) Original dialect mode (Showcase of true strength eg. fighting 3m class, strongly protective of what's important to her eg. the girl she tries to save, her homeland and traditions in the flashback.)

Mikasa --- I-don't-really-care mode (cares mainly about Eren (+close friends) and responsibility,) ??? mode ("Eren was only trying to kill a fly" to which Jean says shut up, "Sasha farted," eating bread in front of Sasha, stuffing bread in Sasha's face, "The Female-Type Titan looks like Annie" to which Eren says wtf you on, "I'll only be a drag" during the second invasion, "I also grew up in the mountains" in reply to Sasha's warning (I honestly have no idea why she says that other than to troll her.))



There are some characters who specifically choose to have one and only one 'self':
Ymir feels strongly about keeping her character for who she is.
Eren's unyielding determination keeps him on the one and only path.
Bert's warrior identity has never been lost such as Reiner does.
Levi's kindness and discipline.
Jean's realism.

I say "choose to have," because they're quite aware of their own qualities.




Oh, and Mikasa's sense of humour is totally earth-shattering-ly bad. I honestly have no idea why she says "Eren was only trying to kill a fly......" Actually she's not even trying to defend for Eren lol.

(I'm not gonna say anything about Armin just yet... we shall see )

I was told recently that there has been a tweet going around about the author of Snk making BertholdtxReiner official, if they come out of at the end alive.
Supposedly, the author made the claim on tweeter himself and I just want to validate the statement.

And does anyone want to see the extras on the back of Snk's manga volume 11? It's the most recent release (although not new) and I don't mind scanning it for the ones who hasn't seen it yet. It's rather funny because it's a two page spread about Jean, Armin, Christa, Mikasa, and Connie's version of titans. There's also a page of Mikasa/Eren in Alternate Universe.

I'm not sure about this, but I don't think Isayama even updates his twitter account at all(last tweet was 27th of April). Besides that, the Japanese fandom would be all over about this if he ever said such a thing. As far as my sources go, I have yet to see one...

That tweet was a complete fabrication. It was added to the Shingeki no Kyojin wikipedia without a source, so I doubt it even exists as a joke (ie, someone making a fake Isayama twitter and tweeting about it). Plus considering how Bert has a crush on Annie...I don't know how that would work. I still ship them though.

I am really surprised by the visual novel! I'm wondering if Levi was a professional hitman, or whether he wanted to take revenge. I'd never have expected that kind of past history though this is reminding me a lot of Ja'far and Sinbad's relationship in Magi woops.

If you consider the anime canon, you might as well consider the visual novels canon too. After all, these stuff is still supervised Isayama-sensei. XD

Poor Eren!? And what Isayama's doing is a bit dangerous, a shonen mangaka must at least do an effort to like his main character or make him stand out from other characters whether it be in the anime or manga, or else no one will and it will make the series' popularity suffer. (Naruto and Sasuke, anyone?) … Unless he wants to make Eren a loser first before becoming ultra badass later.

I noticed that too when I saw there were only rough sketches from Isayama for Levi and Hanji in there while I remembered I'd seen Mike's scanned somewhere else!

Well, Eren IS a loser. Even Hannes said that. He has just the determination but he was pretty impressive in the Trost arc and managed to be 5th of his class. I want to see him use more 3DMG .

Technically they are all losers. The manga is about failure after all. Humanity was helpless from titans when they first appeared and it only survived because titans kept them alive within the walls. Humanity was helpless when berholt destroyed the wall and as a result 200000 died. Eren is a titan but he has yet to win a single battle as one as one way or the other he ends up getting his ass kicked. The only "victory" humanity has ever experienced against titans was closing the wall with a stone but even that came with immense material and human loses. Safe for that there is no victory for humanity anywhere to be seen. Even if they rescue eren right now the issue is that the walls are made with titans and the warriors outside the wall could destroy them at their whim. Even reyner and berholt could have destroyed humanity at their whim during the last 5 years.

Well the last part isn´t really true.
Bertholdt and Reiner couldn´t get close to the second wall without joining the army, graduate and therefor get a legitimate reason to get close to the thing in the first place.
That Bertholdt wanted to join the MP was so he could have a reason to get close to the last wall without raising suspicions.
but Eren of course derailed that plan with his stunt in Trost.
So it´s not like B&R could destroy the walls whenever they wanted to.

You realize that turning into a titan is tiring after a while?
Maybe Reiner and Berthold have a shorter transformation time that doesn´t let them pull through such a stunt twice in a row? and they needed to preserve the cover.
I think the reason to why Bertholdt just appear and vanish like he does is that he has a limited time (5-7 minutes at most) where he can be in titan mode.
And Reiner is not much better since he has to carry his armor on, and sprinting also takes energy.
So it could also be a question of conservation of energy as well as we see Eren get tird out whenever he transforms and even Annie slept for several days after her stunt in the forest.
And remember Reiner in the current chapter has already turned titan once for the day and is on the second run. Who is to say that he will be able to keep it up for much longer?

Being a titan is tiring but I don't think that would be relevant to them destroying the walls at all. The first time they destroyed the walls berholt just needed a few seconds to do it. As for reyner, he can obviously maintain his transformation for at least moderate periods of time. He managed to run to the giant forest in one go and he is up and going again thanks to resting again. Stamina would not be a consideration when it comes to destroying the walls. If it was then it would have been a greater issue back 5 years ago when they had the stamina and bodies of little kids. Reyner has been able to maintain his titan transformation apparently for hours so far and he actually started out tired, hungry and sleep deprived. Annie went at it for the entire duration of the scouting legion expedition and she basically ran the whole time. She actually kicked eren's ass even after all the stuff she went through...

As for why berholt just appears and vanishes I would argue the manga has already given a simpler explanation than that. Berholt is too heavy to even properly support himself, he is actually the least dangerous of the gang. His movement is slow and sluggish and considering he did not even seem capable of lifting his leg without a lot of effort odds are that even if he can walk he would still be too slow. He is obviously not going to get past the wall and walk to the other wall. He would be a huge target and it would be immensely time consuming.
