I have a feeling this sortie was planned to draw the female titan out and kill her. Irvin probably see's Eren as his trump card, that he can transform into a Titan and defeat this woman. The plan was probably to draw her into the woods, kill her, and return. They regroup within Wall Rose, replace anyone who died and then begin the next stage in recovering Wall Maria. The goal may be to secure territory and defeat key Titans while working their way to Eren's house.

The other unit is told to stop any giants from entering the forest, so Elvin wants to make the forest as battlefield for female giant and Eren?
I wonder which Eren will chose, trust the order to leave the forest, or turn into giant and fight female giant? Although, it seem more likely he will turn into giant.
From Levi's plan of cutting Eren's nap without killing him (although may cutting the limbs) probably will lead to be means to cut out and take out the one inside female giant.
And lol at the last page, I think it shows what the other team member actually feel against Eren. Levi is the only one who keeps his cool. Well, I can't blame them, it's frightening to stay with someone who can turn into giant and may kill you.
I wonder what is the real prequisite to turn into giant. Eren failed to transform inside the well, but he incompletely changed when he want to reach for his spoon. Maybe he should reach out his hand and not only bite it? There's emotion needed to, probably. As we can see, the giant hand did grab the spoon and held it.

He noted that Armin said that his parents were "killed by the military."
Armin is caught pondering over the female titan's expression when she sees him again.

I'm wondering if the female titan is a failed experiment (and Armin's mother), and this little exercise is both a test of which titan is the more advanced, and dispatching the "defective" female titan.

I wouldn't doubt that there will be government corruption, but I'm also betting with the mentioning of Ymir, there will be a good amount of mythological and supernatural intervention. What I'm getting at is I have a feeling the military is behind a good amount of wrong doings, but even further than that is some (pseudo-Norse) mythological being taking "revenge" on Ymir's death (which from his body, human's were made -- according to Norse mythology).

Either that, or some made scientist ~100 years ago created titans and called himself "Ymir" as he would be the "father of the giants." Might have been meant as a military weapon, or perhaps a suit for exploration/survival means or even so humans could be made into a "heightened" level of existence.

I'm likely way off, but I think it's worth thinking about.

PS: Love this manga, and I don't really read manga. The author keeps the information straight and on point, while still giving the details as optional reading.

Chapter 25 raws are out at rawpiece (formerly raw bunko)! I don't read spoilers or untranslated raws, so no comments yet.

While it is not out of the question, I don't think there is enough evidence to think the female Titan is Armin's mother. I do think their is enough information to believe that there is an organization of some sort that created the Titans. Whether they are military, political, or purely scientific I couldn't guess yet. I do believe that Erin's father worked for them and the records are what is hidden in his house. The female titan is most likely someone who works for the organization, who has been given a serum similar to the one Eren's father used on him. Based on what Commander Pixis said the Titans could have been created to unite humanity. An enemy capable of destroying everyone without prejudice would force humanity to put aside pettiness, greed, and war to fight something greater than themselves.

I'm always glad to meet other fans and glad you came to MH to discuss! Hopefully Shingeki becomes as big online as it is in Japan

I agree that what Pixis said is important, especially given that it was "out of place." But with that theory, it'd make the pieces come together.

Isn't Armin's parents dispatched to the suicide mission to reduce the population, caused by food shortage after Wall Maria fall?

Think Eren's emotions were the problem in this chapter.
When was inside the well he wasn't to willing to transform into a Titan since the plan to control him in case he enter in a frenzy state could end with him dead.
But later when eating Eran was thinking about how bad it would be to their plans to retake Wall Maria if he loses his titan power(although everyone else was very relieved with te possibility Eren wouldn't be able to turn anymore).

By the way, that woman titan is really creepy...The way she looked at Eren it was like she was longing for him.
Guess she is in love with Eren xD

Yeah, I figure Eren needs to be in some sort of negative emotional state to transform in addition to being wounded, self sustained or otherwise. Fear, anger, stress, tension, sadness would be needed to facilitate transformation. After that I assume the strength of his transformation is dictated by how emotional he is. His anxiety about not being able to transform and letting the squad down did not result in a full transformation. Where as I assume that if that if he were ever truly upset or angry he would not only transform but lose control, no matter how much he comes to master his titan powers.

The female Titan was creepy, and I really hope that was not lust in her eyes Really, I think it was the look of a hunter who found her prey. More evidence she is a transformed Titan, like Eren. I wish we learned a little more about her but the chase at the beginning of the chapter was exciting.

Interesting twist on the shounen cliche of trusting your friends this month. When Itachi gave Naruto the same advice, it was a self help homily. The same advice must feel a little different when you are watching comrades getting squashed against trees by a monster hell bent on capturing you.

Armin's parents were mentioned in chapter 12. The military police mention the "recovery mission" here. Then Armin says the recovery mission was a euphemism for thinning out the population to conserve food here.

It would make sense that he needs something besides pain to transform, considering his life during training. I agree that it has to be resolve + emotional tension.

Judging by how the chapter went, we -know- this was set up. Annie being the titan is a neat idea, but I don't think she's more than a person with a strong front, and a weak spirit. Still, I'm very open to her being the female titan.

I don't think the female titan is Annie...
Anyway the only thing i am almost sure is someone inside the walled human nation knows more about the titans and it was probably to protect this secret the titans used as test subjects by the scounting legion were killed ( to the chagrin of Hanji the crazy researcher ).

Eren actually change after he reach the spoon but not make it, maybe if the spoon is in his reach he won't change into giant and normally take the spoon?
The giant transformation looks to be happen for a purpose. Like before, when he protected Mikasa and Armin from canon shot, the transformation stop after he transform enough to prevent the canon from hitting them, and now the transformation stop and we can see the spoon in the giant's hand, so his purpose already fulfilled.
When Levi told the others to close their ears, Oruo was too late (and Eren only with one hand) and the two faces in the next panel is funny. And when Eren turn into giant in the flashback, because of the explosion, Oruo stuck with the table and blown out lol, well, still better than Gunta who got a full-blown. Erd perfectly guarded though.

Sama_al_Azraq has a point, Eren's transformation probably needs some purpose to happen besides his simply injuring himself. That's one thing. The other thing is obviously emotions. He needs to be under the influence of negative emotions, more precisely hate (that's how he transformed inside a titan's belly for the first time), or suspicion, distrust and animosity, I think.

Inside the well he knew he might get killed if he lost control, but he didn't feel animosity towards his squad-mates for what they would have to do in that case, as he knew they would kill him not out of their personal hate for him but out of duty.

But it all changes when they're relieved he failed to transform. Now, it's rather obvious Eren is not the logical type, but the emotional one, he feels before he thinks, and he rushes to act based on his emotions before even thinking about stopping to analyze the situation first. When his squadmates expressed their relief, I think he sensed their veiled hostility for him. He is being who he is, I doubt he could realize with his mind what their phrases and behavior entail, but I'm sure he felt with his heart they weren't completely honest with him, putting up a friendly facade instead, but in reality they're afraid of him, deep inside they think he's a freak and should be avoided or maybe even dead if possible. They don't really want to accept him the way he is, and, in fact, they're not much different from everybody else who wants him dead. A less extreme point of view, but still basically the same. 'If they're hostile to me, I will be hostile to them.' I suspect he transformed responding to the negative emotion their true view of him stirred in him.

They want him to trust them, yet they're afraid of and don't trust him. Definitely not a situation where I would want to put my life in their hands. And Eren was pretty quick to make his choice after Rivaille's words (he was ready to go fight alone, choosing to trust himself) until Petra called out to him. Then we got that flashback that represents his doubts about trusting them and the evidence not to do so, so to speak.

So far, Rivaille and most likely the crazy scientist are the only ones who don't seem to secretly resent Eren for what he is.

My opinion, anyway.

Rivaille? Do you mean Levi? Isayama said that his name is taken from a film titled "Jesus camp" and I got Levi when I googled it, so his name should be Levi.
I think this flashback will end with Eren and the squad-mates actually trust each other, though. Not that they won't kill him if he goes berserk and the safe way to extract Eren while cutting his limbs fail.

His full name is Rivaille Levi (or Levi Rivaille in the West) I believe But I recognized him mostly by "Levi" too XD

I'm glad they devised that plan to "cut him out" if things get messy, mostly because it helps ease his comrades a bit (they'll have a plan to defend themselves).

The chase was very emotional, with Eren noted the lone fighter. That had to be hard to deal with.

I'm the lone wolf with this one, but I really like Krysta/Christa. Maybe because she reminds me of a childhood friend, but I love how she isn't fearless, yet she will go that extra mile.

I think I don't want Annie to be the female giant. She's the only one who joins Military Police, and that give her the special citizenship to have residence inside Wall Shina. She can give us the view inside and about the royal family too, while the other can't. Well, unless Eren or the others make a great achievement and earn the citizenship.

Yeah, Annie being the giant would be pretty unwanted development -- it'd crash into cliche territory. Guess my "theory" would, also... :O

I completely agree with you with your post in it's entirety, though I think that Eren will wind up conversing with the royal family later on.

XD I wouldn't call her a "goddess," but she's definitely awesome XD

Edit: did anyone notice that on the cover (?) when they usually show the top 10, Marco is now gone? Kinda sad.

In volume 2, Eren gone from the cover, so it's predictable that Marco will gone in the next volume after he found dead. Now the question is, hom many of them will left alive and not blacked out from the cover in the end?

There's a rumor of Shingeki no Kyojin getting a movie because of this site. It said that for director Nakashima Tetsuya new movie, they're searching for extra as running away mobs for a scene in peaceful shopping district turn into chaos when "giant" suddenly appear.
Some months ago, according to his blog, Hajime met with the director. So maybe it's really is movie for Shingeki. But shopping district make it doubtful. Unless the setting changed, or it's about the past where giant appeared for the first time? Not really sure about it.
