Ymir is an older titan shifter than the others possibly the oldest if she hasen't developed power yet she might not at all she might be considered to be the beta test subject if you catch my meaning.

Something which just stroke me as weird is the way the walls were built... Wouldn't it have been better if rather than building 4 towns around the outer most wall they would actually keep the furthest away from them as they can? humans somehow attract and the towns were meant to keep titans concentrated there for whatever reason (there was one but I can't remember). Wouldn't it have been better if they kept the population at large as far away as possible from the outer wall while keeping by the wall just the necessary to keep proper survailance over it? That way even if the wall is breached there wouldn't be that many titans attracted to it. Maybe I missed something explained in the manga though. Perhaps the wall was made so that at due time it could be breached and it would do the most damage?

Am I missing something? Why is Ymir getting so much attention? She is a minor character at best, and her titan form is retarded. Plus, she ate humans. In light of Reiner, Annie, and Bert, That is primitive to say the least.

Because people want to know the origin and/or purpose of Titans.
Hanji based her titan knowledge on two very primitive titans.
Is Ymir a born titan or was she an experiment?

Plus, of 3 incidents that occurred so far involving Ymir.

Ilse's notebook:
Ilse is running around in the plain fields documenting her experience with titans. She encounters one and it starts speaking to her. That titan says "Ymir's people," "Ymir-sama" and "Great" and it bows in front of her. So maybe this titan knew Ymir or it is from a civilization called Ymir (?) If you notice, Ilse looks like Ymir. Then the titan tries to speak again, it can't, it gets frustrated to the point of inflicting self harm and then kills Ilse.

Ymir's background story:
She has to beg for money. Why? How? is she alone? is she homeless? did she escape from her hometown? (that's kinda implied but left to interpretation).
She cares about her name and her heritage very much. But we don't know at all what her heritage might be. She has conflicting feelings; she is proud of her name and where she comes from but at the same time she is rejecting some part of her past that she doesn't like at all.
Why was she called Ymir? Is her name the name of a certain titan-human civilization?

She distracts Connie from thinking about that titan that looks like his mom. It's as if she wants humans to know as little as possible about titans.

The canned food she found in the castle:
She can read the label. Why can't Reiner? Why is there canned food with another language in the castle? Did humans bring it there? Who's castle is it?

I don't know...So many questions.... it's fascinating and somewhat fun to figure out the puzzle

I agree. She only transforms into a lesser titan unlike the others but overall she has been built to have great relevance in regards to the entire plot surrounding the titans (which is ALL the plot). She has been built ever since we saw that dairy thing which was quite a while back....

Regarding their expeditions they didn't know about this information about the titans and sunlight until after they managed to capture some titans after trost (although I wonder if bigger titans are more active than smaller one during the night?). Also it would be kinda dark and probably dangerous to use 3D gear without a way to see where you're going.
