It's taken us 6 years to get this far in the manga, and in that time the Bats had only been together - what, eight months tops? That puts the timeline on the series as being at early 2003 right now.
When that German guy with the eidetic memory first pitches up in Noo Yaawk, there's a whole discussion about how strong Germany is in the world of football, and how they have five teams in NFL Europe. And that's where things fall down.
So where did these other two German NFL Europe teams come from, then?
If we're running with the theory that story time has only been 7-8 months, we're still in 2003, before that year's NFL Europe season began. The teams back then were the Frankfurt Galaxy, Rhein Fire, Berlin Thunder (having replaced the London/EnglandAfterthoughts Monarchs in 1998), Amsterdam Admirals, Scottish Claymores and Barcelona Dragons. The Dragons didn't become the Cologne Centurions until 2004, and the Claymores didn't become the Hamburg Sea Devils (isn't Hamburg a landlocked city, by the way?) until 2005.
So when is ES21 set: 2002-3, or 2006-7? It can't be present day, because they talk about NFL Europe as if it's still around. It closed up shop after the 2007 season.
