4th panel here, the line in question: 練習用のボール賭けてゴッソリ持っていかれたこともあった
Not sure if he means he literally wagered practice balls on something and lost, or if this is idiomatic, or some special baseball terminology? If it helps any, the speaker is an American who has lived in Japan for 20 years.
