As far as I'm concerned, it's not so much a case of whether one group needs three translations, as it is of whether those three translators need one group. Binktopia was in a position to offer me what no-one else could: the guarantee that svg's (and Nagumo's) translations would not be used in Edited Mangas before my own. Time is a very precious commodity in the world of Edited Manga; he who releases first tends to have a huge advantage in readership over all others. And particularly considering that svg has been consistently beating me to the mark for quite a while now, it's an opportunity I'm all too happy to take.
With all the Edited Mangas being released simultaneously, by the same group, in the same high quality, the readership has no choice but to judge the translations on their own merit, rather than on the merit of which came first. That sounds like a highly desirable situation to me, and one that is ordinarily impossible to achieve.
As for the twenty-four hour exclusivity, that's just me fulfilling my side of the deal. Obviously Binktopia themselves are doing me something of a favour in making this guarantee, so the exclusivity is my way of paying them back. Personally, as long as I have that one guarantee, I have no real reason to object to other groups using my translations at any point after, or even before, Binktopia's release, but obviously if I were to allow my translations to be used freely beforehand, that would be unfair on the other translators involved, who are holding back for the simultaneous release. I initially suggested that the exclusivity last only until the release itself, but it seems Binktopia have their own reasons to want a higher level of exclusivity than that. Their preference was full exclusivity; mine was as little exclusivity as possible. Twenty-four hours seemed like a reasonable compromise.
That said, I'm still not 100% committed to this, and if I decide it no longer seems necessary, or if it causes more problems than it solves, then I may well choose to rethink my position.
