Yeah, "chira" is "glance". And I think v3g374 covered the other two.

Sorry for bothering you again, Carlos; but may I ask you to translate something again? Namely, one page of chapter #228 of Reborn!. Why? Well, "INP" translated that chapter back then & now I'm not really sure if their translation is correct :I

Thank you~~~

Byakuran: Well, I wouldn't want to give you too many things to worry about, would I?
Irie: ......
Byakuran: I thought about it like this. // Simply choosing people with exceptional strength was only ever going to take me so far. After all, it's resolve, not strength, that is vital for using the Rings' power. // As such, I searched the entire world for people, Mafia or otherwise, who were not only strong, but also possessed a level of resolve beyond that of any ordinary person. // With the condition that their "resolve" could be converted into loyalty to me. // The world is a pretty big place! That's why I was able to find them. // For instance, this man... // As you see here, he was born and raised in an incredibly beautiful village, blessed with all the joys of nature. // But the moment I asked him "would you show me your resolve?"...

I would like to ask on the Status of Ao No Exorcist Ch 7...
...I'll get around to that... at some point... ><

Uh... the same as everyone else's?

Anime = Japanese animated series
Manga = Japanese comics

Something like that...? Is this a trick question?

Hmm.. I thought so. I tend to call it a trick question, yes.
If it is one, I'm not a 100% sure either.

It's just that I see it differently (and, in my opinion, correct.)
Though, I have the same opinion on manga.

Haha.. well, why not then.

This has gotten me in a lot of difficult discussions, with people that don't actually have an opinion on it, :p

But I think the correct way to define anime is the same way as we define to cartoons or full-CGI movies, like the one's made by Pixar.

In my opinion, Anime is just the Japanese definition of Animation, used to define animated work, if it's Flash, CGI or just Drawn, that doesn't matter.

Which means that Anime is just the Japanese synonym of the word Cartoon, which we use to define Animated works. A lot of people (non-japanese "anime fans") use Anime as a collectible word for Animated series/movies and such which are produced in Japan.

One of the most famous example's; Avatar: The Last Airbender. It's not anime. At least, that's what everyone says (who's a fan of a Japanese originated anime). Nonetheless, if you listen to my above statements, it's just an Anime like Pokémon or Dragonball are, the only difference is that it made in another country.

And the country of origin doesn't make it any different (besides the spoken language).

Well, personally, I think you're getting confused between the Japanese and English usage of the word. Certainly, in Japanese, the word "anime" simply means "animation", and can be used to refer to any animated series, Japanese in origin or otherwise. But it's been reborrowed into English with a different meaning, and if you're defining it in the context of English, then that's the definition you ought to be using, really. The question of whether "anime" can only refer to series that actually originated in Japan, or whether it can be extended to non-Japanese series that imitate the style of Japanese series, is a more complicated one, but I think it's at the very least clear that in English, "anime" is not a simple synonym of "animation" or "cartoon". That's just not how it's used in English, and never has been.

If you were to ask me whether I think the definition of "anime" should be extended to non-Japanese anime-style series, then personally, I'd say it probably shouldn't. Why? Because in my experience, that's not how the word is used - series of this type are referred to as "anime-style", "Western anime", or similar, but never simply as "anime". And ultimately, the definition of a word is dictated by how it's actually used.

(Oh, and incidentally, you said you agreed on the definition of "anime", but not of "manga" - but the exact same situation exists for both words. "Manga" in Japanese can be used to refer to Western comics as well as the Japanese variety. So if you say "anime" should refer to both, then really, "manga" should as well.)

The gengo-otaku part of me seized my hands and made me look up anime in the OED just for shits 'n giggles. Def as follows:

OED said:
A Japanese animated film or television programme, drawn in a meticulously detailed style, usually featuring characters with distinctive large, staring eyes, and typically having a science-fiction or fantasy theme, sometimes including violent or sexually explicit material; this genre of entertainment.
Hmm, I suppose that's about right.

Anyhow, for whatever reason the earliest citation they have is 1985 (surely there's citeable English usage before then?), but it was the second citation that has a [very, very] loose connection to the issue at hand (and also happened to make my head hurt):

OED said:
1988 MacUser Nov. 60/1 This game is the closest thing I've seen on a computer to Japanese anime-style animated cartoons.
How's that for a redundantly redundant redundancy?

Oh, and I also look up anime on dictionary.com (just because) and the Random House def that comes up on top is just too funny (for me, anyhow):

Random House said:
a Japanese style of motion-picture animation, characterized by highly stylized, colorful art, futuristic settings, violence, and sexuality.
Obviously they forgot to mention the tentacles that rape the women. :eyeroll Guess they need to recalibrate their stereotyping machine.

Anyways, sry for wasting space in your thread...

Hey dude, I would love it if you would translate
chapter 198 Icecold discord.

This is where Ulquiorra reported to Aizen and how he explains
why he didn't kill Ichigo etc. I think this chapter has some pretty important
plot material.

Hi cnet! just wondering why, in the last couple of weeks, you are releasing Naruto's translations in the end of all the SJ translations, even when the raw is out early.

I'm not trying to rush you or anything (and I know you wouldn't be even if I'd wanted to), just came to my attention this issue.

As I've probably mentioned before in this thread, I've always given Naruto the lowest priority out of the Jump series. I used to have something vaguely resembling reasons for doing so, but at this point it's basically just because it's what I'm used to doing. So when the Jump RAWs all come out around the same time, it's a pretty safe bet that Naruto is going to be the last one I bother with.

If Naruto comes out significantly *before* other Jump RAWs and I still end up leaving it to the end, then that probably means either I was busy with other translations during that period, or I was just not getting around to translations in general for whatever reason, and by the time I did get around to it, the other Jump RAWs were out, so they got priority.

I really appreciate your translations on xxxHolic, and I've noticed that you've had to "catch up" on some of the recent chapters. Have you've lost interest in this title, or are you having difficulties getting RAWs for it now?

Thank you for your efforts.

Neither. I was just careless and didn't get around to translating it for a while, mostly because I haven't been finding enough time to keep up to date on / catch up on translations lately. Hopefully it won't happen again >_<
