Well, kanji without furigana isn't a huge issue. Makes translating a little slower, because it's a little slower to look up words I don't recognise, but hey, if I had a huge issue with it, then I'd be screwed when (as is often the case...) the furigana is barely legible in the RAWs. And when translating xxxHOLiC, for that matter, which doesn't use furigana at all except for unusual readings.

Handwritten text, on the other hand, can always be a pain :p Can take ages to work out what exactly a kanji is supposed to be if I don't recognise it ~_~ Same goes for when the RAW is just too low-quality (either because the RAW is just THAT BAD or because the text is too small) that the kanji themselves are barely legible, so forget recognising them, actually making out their shapes to look them up is practically impossible.

But to be honest, more often than not, it's not either of those things that throw me, what really throws me is when there's an unusual phrase or word (in the case of a word, usually without any kanji) where I just have no idea on the meaning. A phrase/word unusual enough that I can't find it in any dictionary (or a variation, a phrase which is in such slangy/dialect speech that I can't work out the standard form to search for in a dictionary).

Usually when that happens, I have to resort to searching for the phrase in Google (or if it's a word rather than a phrase, the Japanese Wikipedia can also help) and using actual Japanese pages in context to try and work out the meaning, which is EXTREMELY hit-and-miss ~_~

One thing that used to throw me a lot when I tried to translate it is giongo and gitaigo (the sound-effect-type words that show up both in actual sentences and as, well, sound effects.) I don't translate the SFX generally except in a couple of series where I feel it's actually worth it, but when I did (or when they came up in ordinary text), they often threw me because there are just so many of them and they tend to be so badly-documented in dictionaries. However, recently, I found an awesome giongo/gitaigo dictionary which finds what I'm looking for nine times out of ten. It's great.

As for Gintama, I don't read it. I did kind of check out the beginning of it at one point, but didn't read very much.

Interesting. I just wanted to know what kinds of problems other translators run into. I tend to use a little bit more of a relaxed approach..because if i go to stiff, especially with Gintama, things tend to flow less freely. I watch a lot of anime raw so little phrases usually click with me rather easily.

Sad that you don't read Gintama, its like Sket Dance and Kenshin combined really ^^ Though i saw in this thread that you don't read Kenshin..so that explains a bit.

Again nice work, and I hope you keep up what you're doing :) Between you shrimpy and the other translators...at least all of jump is being translated ^_^.

I would like to say thank you for making this forum a huge success. Good reliable translators are hard to find, so keep up the good work. :)

oo, thanks so much for that giongo/gitaigo dictionary! That has come in really handy for me. I always like to know whats going on in the background, even if most of it can be inferred :p

Heh.

To tell the truth, I essentially just took one look at the title of Embalming back when it first appeared and decided "no, doesn't sound that interesting". I could well be wrong, but, well... I'm not exactly looking for new series to translate right now anyway ~_~ I daresay I'd pick up a new one if it did catch my eye, but the fact is, the ones I'm doing now are work enough for me, really ^^;

At any rate, I always appreciate people posting in here, so thanks for that ^^

Eh? "Back translating"? Did I ever stop?

Well, I suppose there was that brief period across Christmas where I didn't get around to translations for a while, but that's a while ago now ~_~

...Two-hundred and thirty-two translations? Is that how many I've done? Wow. That does seem like quite a lot. Here's to my reaching double, triple, a hundred times that amount! XD

Ermm yeah, there was a period not long ago when you went "missing". I was wondering where you've been that time too :p But I guess everyone needs the time off from time to time ^^

232 is a lot :o And yeah! Good luck in reaching those numbers! :nuts

Doesn't really sound like my sort of thing. Besides, I don't really have the rampant free time to take on completely new series from scratch right now.
