Okay, so here comes one of those treads that look ridiculous when the series is finished.
The question, what ending do you expect, want or predict for TG:re? I know it`s too soon to give a proper answer but that is exactly the point, no one has a slight idea of how will develop the events for Kaneki, his friends and the CCG`s good guys.
I`ve read countless theories and most of them predict a tragical ending, with Kaneki dying and leaving a legacy of understanding between ghouls and humans, something like "I gave my life to create a better world, but I will not live in it".
This looks good enough, but to be honest I think this series would close in a perfect way if in some way our beloved MC can finally live happily and return to the good moments at Anteiku, the chats with Hide, get to know Amon Koutarou and finally, but not less important, have a relationship with Touka.
And believe me or not, but this ship is so obvious that it even was reflected in the last moments of the first manga:
This last panel means that Kaneki has to come back to her, she always wanted him to be by her side and kaneki knew it, but he only had one goal: gain power to protect himself and get answers. There`s so much things foreshadowed in this series, but the most evident one is that Touka loves Kaneki and he cares for her as much as he cared for Hide (this one is like his brother, his family).
This last page give as another hint, as :re starts in a peculiar way:
After the tragic end of the first part, we start again with a shining setup: no more grey tragedy... clear blue.
I think Ishida is writing :re to give a satisfying conclusion of the series, to accomplish the broken dreams of all the goodhearted characters that suffered in the prequel , to give them a happy ending.
I know I may sound too optimistic or even romantic but I have faith in Kaneki too and he will end this story with the ones he love by his side, Amon has a more difficult situation though
