I have a question that I cannot for the life of me figure out.

Why in the world would anyone release any manga in .RAR format, when everyone else releases zips?

Advantages of using zips:
-Full support by ACDSee, the most popular image viewer (by poll on mangaupdates.com).
-Easier organizing because everyone releases zips. I won't have both zips from Hawks and rars from Evil_Genius in the same folder (that just looks ugly).

Advantages of using RARs:
-Several kilobytes of more compression. That's it.

So, please enlighten me. Why?

I think you have the answer on your question. Better compression, that is a HUGE advantage when, say, you pay bandwith and thousands of leechers are interested in your releases. I have to say, it was annoying at 1st for me but then, well you get Winrar and it's all good.
Bottom line, it is not going to change. You can still unpack the releases and repack them the way you like, all pretty.

I loled at that :amuse

And no, not everybody use zips, especially for whole volume releases.

The better compression is so tiny it's not even noticeable. Plus the money for distribution of releases is not coming out of YOUR pockets, it's spread across many channels: Bittorrent, #Lurk, Rapidshare... two of which don't cost anyone money at all.

As it stands, whenever I download a RAR release, I have to unRAR and recompress into a zip before I read it. Anyone who uses ACDSee has to do the same. It's just an annoyance that is utterly unnecessary given the extremely tiny advantage of file size and the multitude of distribution method over the internet.

Even #Lurk prefers zips... and they're actually paying for their bandwidth.

Psi, our administrator, DOES pay for bandwith, forums AND bittorrent tracker. Our releases are always seeded, so he pays for that one seed that you can always find, meaning: no dead torrents at EG. So no it's not MY pocket, it's HIS, doesn't mean that I should not care.

You should PM him to work it out with him, as he is the specialist, and because I really can't see what the big deal is.

EDIT: after investigation, it turns out that we use rar because the founder of the group wants it that way. It's not even a compression matter as it seems.

does it really matter enough to post this in two groups' threads, shinwei? who really has had this problem?

To not completely hijack the thread, I love berserk and have read some of zetman and must say that evil genius rocks.

Well, first of all - there is no rule or law for manga to be released in .zips. Just because you prefer the look of that extension nobody has any obligation to make your life easier. I, personally, like the look of .rars and keep releasing in that format for that reason. If you don't want to repack your manga before reading it, there are other image-viewers that do support .rar-viewing, such as CDisplay. And about #Lurk, the only reason we keep the archives in .zips is that iroffer can handle them better. The difference between .rars and .zips is only small when images (such as .jpgs, .pngs and so on) are archived. When you try archiving any other data however, it is immense.

And yeah, Evil Genius rocks a lot. I know their members (some of them have even been members of my group) and still love and read their releases. Keep on rolling.
