Re: The Games Hangout Thread - E3 2011 Edition

Looks great.
Nintendo systems/games are always lacking in the graphics area so hopefully this will impress.
I wonder if I'll end up getting it instead of a ps3.

Re: The Games Hangout Thread - E3 2011 Edition

Looking at what is known about the Wii U, hopefully Nintendo doesn't price it to high. Because if they do it will be likely to run into huge problems with competing with PS3 and NGP(i refuse to use the other name).

One of the NGP's many functions is to work with with a PS3 in pretty much exactly the same way as the Wii U's controller(touchscreen, dual analog sticks, and a secondary video display). Except the NGP is an actual independent piece of hardware as opposed to the Wii U controller which isn't actually capable of doing processing(The Wii U console is actually doing Dual screen the controller is just a display.) So basically for around $500 dollars(maybe less by the time with Wii U comes out) people are going to be able to pick up a new PS3 and handheld system and get all the same features and more; like a muti-touch screen, a rear touch pad, and all the advantages of having additional processing power(not to mention the ps3's features, like the blu ray player).

So basically selling the Wii U at much over $400 is going to be quite a task.(Which is probably why Nintendo stocks dropped 10% in the days after the Wii U announcement:().

I would guess nintendo knows better than to sell an overly expensive console. It did not work for PS3 and did not do too well with the xbox 360 and low price did wonders for wii. They should have gotten the message that families don't want to pay too much for game consoles overall.... I would be severely disappointed if the console is priced over 350 dollars or so.

Well it did work for the PS3 and 360 in the long term, both consoles are success stories at this point, but certainly not as successful as the Wii; which was a smash hit in console sales. The Wii and those systems also weren't exactly in direct competition before. The Wii immediately established itself as the console for relatively cheap family gaming. And was basically the only console that offered that.

We know the Wii U is probably going to be more than the Wii was when it came out ($250). How much more is anybody's guess. But with both the Xbox and the PS3 costing around $300 and likely to receive another price drop before the Wii U releases. The Wii U is jumping into a really crowded market and facing strong competition.

It also is has the prospect that casual gamers may not flock to the next gen the same way hardcore gamers tend to, which has been a nagging issue for the 3DS.

The 3ds is also overpriced, at least over here in Singapore.
350$ is actually reasonable for me.

I agree with this statement, sony and Microsoft are also planning to release new consoles in the future and NGP is very close.

This is true, but that doesn't really help the Wii U at launch.

Sony has been pretty open about the fact that they consider the PS3's market life cycle to be 10 years. If that's true then the PS3 is only halfway through it's lifespan. So the Wii U is probably looking at around 5 more years of competition there.

Nothing nearly so firm on microsoft's plans. They talked about a 10 year lifespan but i kinda expect them to go next gen before that.

------------------------------

Don't get me wrong i expect the Wii U to make a profit, but i don't expect sales anywhere near the Wii. The basic market conditions it's going into reminds me a bit of the GameCube actually. Except where the GameCube was competing with the PS2 and Xbox; and the Wii U is facing down the PS3 and Xbox360.

Though i suppose it's worth mention that the poor GameCube was facing the best selling gaming console in history by far the Playstation 2(although the Nintendo DS is making a respectable run at that record).

I think we could expect wii users to go for the wii U in general. I don't think it has ever been that much of an issue for people to trade up their consoles in the long run. The wii u also offers gameplay possibilities for every type of gamer so with their new console they are effectively covering the entire market. IMO the sales and profit of the wii u depend completely on the price, its that simple- just as it was with the wii. If nintendo manages to price it at a level where it is comparable to the PS3 or xbox then they really should have no trouble getting people to trade up their wiis (of which they could still use the controllers). It's not like the wii U is revolutionizing graphics and other hardware capacities, the machine itself is as powerful as a PS3 or perhaps a bit above so there really is no reason for it to be priced significantly above those.

Apparently Microsoft is going to reveal its next-gen console in next year's E3

---------- Post added June 17, 2011 at 08:33 PM ---------- Previous post was June 14, 2011 at 08:20 PM ----------

Assassin's Brotherhood: Revelation will have a special edition called Animus Edition. It will include a short film, an encyclopedia and a host of other extras (one of them implies that Ezio will confront Vlad the Impaler).

A lot of gaming companies have been hacked. That's really annoying.

Speaking of hacks, the sale of PS3 is up 14% in spite of the PSN outage.

Sony is supposedly releasing a new PS3 model.

The CECH-3000B is an updated 320 gigabyte system. It cuts power consumption from 230W to 200W, and cuts weight from 3.0kg to 2.6kg. There are also some external changes to the power and eject buttons, along with the removal of LED lamps, although the retailer report isn't clear about the specifics for this area.
It will cost the same as the current model.

Just Sony doing the standard streamlining, the kind that gaming hardware companies should constantly be doing(lookin' at you Microsoft). Not a big deal, just a drop in power consumption, weight, and(though they would never admit it openly) probably found a way to make the console a little cheaper to make.

Also probably related to the much rumored PS3 price drop that is supposedly coming later this year.

How is MS not doing it like Sony, both released a slim version with a similar power consumption, around 85-88, so whats to complain. The 360 got through a mass of revisioned SKUs already! Know your facts... because the chips get smaller they are cheaper to produce too. It's a big deal how much the consoles have changed in their life time.

Yeah i know they got revisions not nearly soon enough and not nearly frequent enough. The fact that they spent 5 years selling a console with an over 50% failure rate, before they finally brought out the slim model, is unbelievable to me

Microsoft only changes the minimum possible to keep the console building cheap. They need to be constantly improving there design, like looking at the freaking power consumption(power consumption and heat output are linked) and another look at the cooling systems(still louder than it should be).

FYI

PS3 has had 19 different models.(this new version will make 20)
360 has had 11
Wii has had 3(primarily because it was rather well designed from the start)

Anyone know any cool 360 games? I own both a 360 and a PS3, but lately I've been focusing too much on the latter (actually I've been focusing more on my DS :D). The next game I was thinking about getting for the 360 was Enslaved, but I'm wondering if there any cool exclusives for the console that aren't shooters (of which I'd rather play on my PC). Fable 3 interests me, is it good?

At this moment I really want to play Ocarina of Time 3DS. It's been a very long time since I've played the game, and I would love to play it again without all the bluriness :D. Unfortunately the 3DS is way too pricey at the moment and I need to stop spending money on games (and clothes, which I keep buying for some reason, especially jackets/t-shirts). I suspect that there's going to be a 3DS Lite or something like that, and that's what I'm waiting for.

I played Phantom Hourglass which was awesome gameplay-wise. I just wish the story was a little stronger or if the world was a little more interesting. I really need to play Spirit Tracks but as I said I'm trying not to spend so much money on games. I'd love it if a Majora's Mask remake would also get made. OoT and MM are legen-dary!

the oldschool Zelda classics are legendary for me :D (I grew up with them, hehe):

The Legend of Zelda (1) - NES
The Legend of Zelda (2): The Adventures of Link - NES
The Legend of Zelda (3): A Link to the Past - SNES
The Legend of Zelda (4): Link's Awakening - GB

(I'm not sure which came out first between LoZ 3 and LoZ 4)

--------------------------

If you haven't played them, and you're a Zelda lover, you simply must, play the "real zelda games" (especially the very first two, the NES zelda games)

My first Zelda game was Ocarina of Time. It's sort of funny how I got it. I think I was around 8 or 9 and kept seeing Majora Mask commercials on tv. I was dying to get the game, but I had no pocket money, so I made a deal with my parents in that they would buy me the game if I got an excellent grade on some test. I got the grade as promised but when we got to the game store the only Zelda game they had was Ocarina of Time, which I got since I was unwilling to leave the store empty handed. At that time I thought I was settling for less, that is until I actually played the game. Serendipity I guess :D.

Both Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are my favourites. I've played Link's Awakening, but couldn't get into it because I was playing it on an emulator. Now that I think about it, I really did miss my chance at playing quite a few Zelda games. I could've gotten Oracle of Ages/Seasons but didn't for some reason, I ignored the ports on the GBA (Link's Awakening, The Legend of Zelda, The Adventure of Link), missed The Minish Cap and The Wind Waker. I got Twilight Princess, and I'm definitely getting Skyward Sword (which is going to be awesome!).
