Re: The Hang Out Thread v. 7
Global warming is occurring, but it's a natural process. The earth cools down, warms up, cools down. A lot of it depends on Thermohaline Circulation in the oceans (Cold, dense water traveling from Greenland to the Pacific, turning warm and less dense then traveling back to Greenland where the cycle restarts). Also, scientists believe that the sun has cycles as well, where more sunspots = less heat, and at the moment there's few sunspots. Therefore, more heat + more greenhouse gases trapping heat = rising temperatures.
Sure, humans are contributing but it's a natural process. The problem comes around in that we don't know how long these different cycles will last, per se, or if they will stop at all. Especially with the sun's heat cycles, since there's less known about that then about fluctuating Carbon Dioxide/Heat levels in past eras. With tracking heat/CO2, they can pull up ice cores in the arctic and document the thickness of the layers of CO2, thus, giving an estimate of temperatures. With the sun, however, we can't exactly do that kind of thing ,oO There's also the fact that humans in developed countries won't change their way of life.
And global warming isn't just about humans burning fossil fuels, it's all about population, degradation, erosion, pollution (air, water, land, etc), salinization, desertification, using certain materials, overfishing, Tragedy of the Commons, the idea of Hubbert's Peak (US processing of oil would peak in the 1970's, WHCH IT DID, and the idea that there's only enough oil left for 40 more years)
