I post this thread because recently i am quite upset with some really ignorant or racist comments from some youtube users against each others:

Though this is kind of tied in with prejudice thread but the issue here are more so of ignorant. And also i feel that communicated with others through the internet, sometimes people just forgot to act like civilize beings.

I didn't have to read the entire excerpt, I know and I encounter these things regularly in the internet, especially youtube.

Here are things to consider:

- it depends if the medium in which these "prejudice" are taking place are being regulated by some form of civilized-enforced content, i.e. moderators

- what age group regularly uses this medium, and what the expected level of education these users have

- the internet gives a user anonymity and therefore removes certain individuals of a sense of responsibility over the consequences of their choices of dialog; in other words, be aware that sometimes, the protection of being anonymous tends to inflate an individual's sense of ego, thinking he or she can get away with whatever he says/type

sometimes, opinions can be exagerrated, and may not necessarily be his/her opinion; i.e. people can lie, or express themselves in hyperboles.


In academia, there is this etiquette that everyone communicate in a civil manner, short of hate speech. Similarly, there are websites/forums where this may, or may not apply. Youtube users are generally of the younger generation, and I would also assume some are uneducated, and then there are others who are not compelled at all to abide by the aforementioned etiquettes I've described, and so these "prejudices" exist in the internet and is expected. My advise: avoid these sites, if you are sensitive; or just ignore them.

I think internally we all have particular "prejudices" about certain people or groups of people, and what separates you from the uneducated is your ability to restrain yourself from being openly hateful.

I think this is the biggest issue here: uneducated people (who I've noticed tend to be of a younger generation, but that could just be that I've observed mostly older people who have had the desire to learn about the world). You hear lots of anti-American sentiments around the Internet these days, even from Americans themselves, yet many of the comments are emotional and prejudiced without expressing a real reason for these feelings. It's like a fad. I've seen - and expressed - disagreements with certain policies worldwide, but when these disagreements are based in reason and logic and have evidence to support the argument, the debates tend to be more civil and, dare I say, even sound more educated than these Youtube comments. Even a genuine prejudice not based on real logic can sound better than the examples provided when the writer is educated and takes care to sound that way.

Additionally, I think young Internet users are just a little too accustomed to violence when it doesn't involve them. On the Internet, real tragic events and videos aren't treated that differently from pranks, photoshopped images, or just plain stupid (but real) events (you know, like dumb criminals or whatnot). If that video was shown on a television news network, I doubt anyone, including those posters, would have the same reaction. It's just that no one of that generation seems to take the internet seriously.

A very serious issue, and I'm glad for the user anonymity that makes people so comfortable in expressing their true opinions about people and the world around them because it allows us to see that society still has its problems.

It's like in Death Note - people pledge allegiance or support or approve the actions of the killer on the internet, but wouldn't do so in real life.

Only thing I can say is that there are always going to be prejudiced people but by the same token, I've seen a fair amount of people with a good attitude (for example, there's a lot of us here on MH, thankfully) that I think effectively balances the ignorant citizens of the world out.

But naturally, both types of people stick to different areas, and for some reason most of the really bad racists hang out on youtube.

This Is a very emotionally charged issue in my opinion, with no real straight answers when it's said and done. The one thing that people really need to keep in mind is the fact that alot of peoples opinions on the internet stem from the fact that so much of the internet when it comes to opinions simply revolves around a user's anonymity. So many people post their opinions on the internet, whether they honestly know about the context or substance of the issue is neither here nor there.

Another issue in this discussion Is the fact that a lot of the people posting most of these YouTube comments are more than likely within the (12-16) age demographic, and thus more than likely have little to no idea what their talking about and are simply posting things like that because they are ignorant of the who's and what's of the situation and because they want to be obnoxious in some way.

I think that in the end people just need to let some things roll of their backs, and realize that just because someone writes something that idiotic doesn't mean that it's necessary to get angry yourself over it. Most of the time that's just the reaction they were looking to incite.

INTERNET = SERIOUS BUSINESS!!

The internet is (falsely believed to be) anonymous. That said, what you are seeing on the internet aren't necessarily what people are saying. It's what they're thinking.

It's scary what people will say on the basis of anonymity. Peer into the mind of an individual, not from what he says to you but what kind of videos he watches on Youtube.

Don't forget though that the web isn't anonymous. "They're watching you." And now they know what you're thinking.
