You know, it somehow strikes me as weird to see a Mexican learn Japanese!
Well, I can imagine.

It would have actually been unusual say, twenty years ago, but times have changed. Basically, there are three reasons why someone here would want to learn Japanese:

1. To advance their career

2. Because the person is an anime/manga/videogame fan

3. Out of pure, genuine interest to learn more about a foreign culture.

Since we have a good deal of Japanese manufacturing plants here, lots of people are interested for reason 1. And since a lot of people here grew up watching Candy-Candy/Voltron/Mazinger Z/Macross/Saint Seiya, there are also a lot of animé fans. Videogames are also relatively popular among those of us who can afford them.

So, the reality is that while not common, it's not unheard of to know at least one person who's studied Japanese at one point. But yeah, when they see me reading a webpage full of Kanji, my co-workers invariably end up asking "and you can actually *READ* that?" - despite the fact most of them know I've been studying Japanese for a while now.

Rarely does anyone approach the language for reason 3 and no more - but once you've started, if you've got nothing of it, you're not going anywhere - thus, those who start for reasons 1 and 2 with not a shred of 3 are doomed to failure!

A lot of people who fall into category 2 - like yours truly - have naturally a good deal of 3, but not all. Those from category 1... oh, they almost always fail, as they're not interested in the language, but in their own gain.

See now, Karmic Justice in action!

Anax said:
It also seems weird to the people I hang out with (then again, they spent most of the time teasing me about it since Greeks make little distinction between Chinese and Japanese and also don't say "It's all Greek to me", rather "It's all Chinese to me").
Yeah, we have similar expressions over here. "Está en Chino" = "It's in Chinese" = it's very difficult to do or to understand.

And it does tend to irk me that people here can make the difference between Chinese take-out and Sushi - food - but not Chinese and Japanese people.

More

Mexican friend A: "Pete, if you leave for Japan you might just end up marrying a Chinese girl!"

Pete: "While that's by no means an impossibility, I'm sure you mean a 'Japanese' girl".

Mexican friend A: Same thing.

Pete: Really? That's news to me.

And the French are the same as the Germans and the Dutch and the Russians , the Greeks and heck, let's include the Turks while we're at it - they're close enough geographically ( <- all of this = sarcasm ).

Anax said:
You also seem like the standard Mexican guy I have in my mind: humorous, laid back, talking straight, the guy who'd make a sexual joke too many... and generally nice company :D
Man, do I like foreign people :tem
I'd like to think I make just the right amount of sexual jokes, but other people think otherwise.  :p
Laid back? Well, I am laying back on my chair right now...
Straight talkin'? Yes, I'm loath to mince words. It may well present a problem in Japan, I fear...bah! I'll get over it!
Generally nice company? Hmmm... I'm not particularly sociable in real life. Something's always on my mind. :) But I'm sure the people who don't mind my cronic absentmindedness find me to be excellent company.

eileenting88 said:
Anyway, if you are given only one letter to describe yourself, what letter will you choose and why?
H ? ... just kidding. :p

P, because my name starts with a P. I'm not really partial to any letter in particular, so I'd guess I'd that's the one I'd use.

eileenting88 said:
If you are given one number to describe yourself, which number will you pick and why?
See, it'd be amusing if I'd actually gone with H, 'cuz then I could just say "69" and have the joke come full circle... *D'oh*! that was an unintentional pun right there. It's all my former roomate's fault - he twisted my poor, innocent little mind!

More

Nah, lessee... hmmm... Well, I don't like even numbers at all, 'cuz they're so boring - being divisible by two and all. Odd numbers in general are far too common - why, there's one for every even number! I honestly don't find them odd at all. No one can figure out exactly how much Pi is, prime numbers suck because I say they do ( besides - they're all odd), negative numbers have negative connotations, so I guess that leaves.. i !

For those not savvy with Math, i is the square root of negative one. I'm told it's actually useful when studying electromagnetics in-depth ... then again, I wouldn't know.

I'll be sure to ask my former roomate, though - he's savvy with both H and i .

Hey hey hey! You must have used copied the quote line after quoting me and then kept pasting it on all your quotes! What's wrong with that? The last two questions where not asked by me, rather Eileen, so please be kind enough to correct that (and apologise in some, latino, Banderas, sweep-her-off-her-feet way if you don't want to face the consequences).

Anyway, I do love your sense of humour! No, wait that's not true... I hate, loathe and despise it, but much like coke, booze and women it's so damn addictive, that I seriously consider camping in your thread! :jk

Question for when you come back: What are those incomprehensible things Speedy says? Something like "ariba" and "andere" :confused

"ariba" = quick/hurry ? i believe
...
but "andalé" or something... let Granny Iwa teach us :D, i'd say it means about the same thing, or one means "hurry" and the other "quick/fast" etc, something like that...

Not really meaning to ask a question, just telling you i like your humorous + serious translations etc, as i can see something of irritating little me in it ;), and i do not think your mind was ever 'innocent' :p, Granny Iwa...

Umm, isn't Pete a man? :blink Shouldn't you be calling him "gramps" or something? :p
Still, he is humorous... in a caustic way at times, which is kind of like my uncle. Who isn't my uncle but I call him uncle anyway. I imagine Pete and I watching some lame American comedy, around 90mins long for some... 4 hours, jokes, puns and irony included. In my mind, he is that kind of guy. Gotta love the "she likes it" comment, next to Sakura's moan... In a way Pete apeals to my dark side :jk

(That would make GK apeal to my holly/paladin side, but that's another story)

Cool! But that won't stop us from spamming up his thread, aye?

When you're back:
1. Bring pie
2. Congratulate your brother on my behalf ;)
3. What/How many different manga have you translated chapters of so far?
4. Do you plan on stopping with the funny Naruto translations from now on?! :sad

good translations skills...lol

by the way ariba or "arriba" meaning is from mexican spanish which means like heads up...but also is use for hurry so when speedy says:

"arriba arriba, andale andale" it means: hurrry hurry, go go!!

i think that is more funny in spanish

regarding granny....LOL....

Hi guys! I'm back, but I also have a lot of work here.

Just a quickie, from a post someone made in my 296 almost-a-translation thread:

xallisto said:
- San is kinda like mr/miss - Although Dono probably fits better for Mr/Miss

- Sama is more like sir/madam

- Kaa-San mother

- Jii-San Father

- Baa-San Grandmother

- Ojii-San Grandfather

- Nii-San Brother

- Nee-San Sister

My Japanese is rather poor so this probably arnt 100% right
Contrary to (a relatively) popular belief, there is no direct English equivalent to the Japanese suffixes we're so used to hearing in animé. Rough approximations and liberal translations can be made, but they're no more than that, and this is the reason why I leave suffixes as-is in my translations.

With regards to the ones mentioned...

"san" is used to refer to third persons. It *is* more or less equivalent to Mister or Miss, but not always.
"chan" is the "cute-ified" form of san. Used for little kids and young girls, mostly.
"kun" is a suffix for people who are younger than you - broadly speaking. Contrary to popular belief, it's gender neutral, but I'm not going into particularas right now. There's really a lot more to say about this suffix, but I'm short on time.
"dono" is more or less the same as *san*, but it's hardly actually used in real life. I guess it conveys a just a bit more of respect, though.
"sama" is the suffix which conveys the most amount of respect. It's used for nobility (i.e. the Emperor and his family), people you adore/worship (like a *really* popular movie star or idol, provided you're a BIG fan) and to address someone in an extremely formal manner (like, say, a customer at a store, etc).

"kaa" is mother. You can add the suffix you want (Kaa-san, kaa-chan, kaa-sama).
"tou" is father.
"ji" is uncle
"ba" is aunt.
"jii" is grandpa.
"baa" is grandma.

And you can add "o" to any one of these.

I hope you enjoyed your time!

And thanks for giving us an insight into the suffixes. It's great to learn something about that.

Let's see... I did Naruto regularly  for like six months.
I did the final chapter of a deeply disturbing shoujo manga called Hot Gimmick because a friend asked me to.
I did like eight chapters of Death Note for TOWNL
I did one chapter of Yakitate Japan because I was asked.
I've done 14 chapters of Mieruhito for Fucking Manga (and I'm on the verge of starting with chapter 15)
Then there's 12 chapters of School of Water Business so far (for Tamachan-scans, going on 13)
And I've done some proofreading on Death Note for TOWNL these past three or four chapters.

That's about it. I've only been active for like a year.

As for the apology, this is what we say in Mexico: "perdón". It means "sorry."

Since Banderas is Spanish, I can't imagine what he'd say, but he'd probably add "¡una pizca de sal!".

But we don't do Antonio. He has terrible taste in movies and helps perpetuate the erroneous image people abroad have of Mexico with crap like Desperado and the new Zorro flicks.[br]Posted at: March 01, 2006, 09:28:00 PM_________________________________________________

Mel Blanc probably meant to have Speedy say something like "Get up, let's go!". We don't actually go around saying that, though - not as far as I know, anyway, :amuse

Ah! And heads up is more like ¡aguas! or ¡piensa rápido! :)

Noooo... we need the funny translation man to continue his excellent comedy stylings of Naruto! I highly encourage you to continue your hilarity whenever and wherever you see fit. Though it does look like you have a lot on your plate. I wish you luck with that.

Oh and what is your job Iwanin?

Sorry about that, it clearly shows my ignorance... :sweat A lot of the time I end up feeling like crap because of all the stereotypes I've grown up with and ended up assimilating to a point I don't even see them in my speech. Again, I'm sorry.
