If there is a king, there must be a crown. i think this is a valid statement, correct me if im wrong
so that being said, i think it would be safe to say that The Straw Hat is the Pirate King's crown. i say this based on the following facts:
  • The Straw Hat used to belong to Gol D. Roger as reminisced by Rayleigh
  • Many of the old folks who knew, and/or dealth with, Gol D. Roger have all basically said that Luffy acts just like Roger
  • Shanks, who "inherited" the hat gave it to luffy when he "wagered on the new era"
  • Luffy's statements that he feels lost without it.

if this is the case, then i would say that shanks was merely the steward and keeper of the crown, and upon meeting luffy found the crown's successor.

i may be over thinking this. . . but idk. what are your thoughts on the matter?

As a symbolic meaning, yeah sure I'll roll with that! + It's very important to Luffy because it was given to him by his father figure ( I see Shanks more as Luffy's father than I do Dragon.

i was talking about a symbolic meaning. and i think your over-rating shanks's role to luffy. Luffy was about 7ish when he met shanks. and shanks was only in town for about a week. Garp, has always played the parent, and luffy treats him like he would treat a father.

Shanks was visited the town multiple times before setting sail for the grand line. its mentioned, and when luffy gets attacked by the bandits shanks is just arriving again and says "I wondered why no one was at the dock to greet us" in other words more than a week.

Shanks and his crew was in Luffy's village for over a year, get your facts straight.

The hat does not seem to be indestructible, considering Nami had to repair it on at least one occasion.

Could be that Luffy was either good at protecting it or the hat seemed to be out of harm's way.

To those who say it's indestructible, well, just look at the OP verse :P
When Luffy use ballon, his clothes doesn't tear apart :)
And yeah it should have burn a lot of times, but it's just convenient you know.

But I agree on this theory when you say it's been passed through generations of D's. Maybe it was Joy Boy's hat.
I'm sure there will one day be an explanation about this hat.

Nothing besides Buggy's knives. That means Buggy is secretly horribly strong. :p

Oda made a point about it being important with Luffy's reaction to the damage. Fact that it hasn't been damaged since then is not that important, I think. Luffy probably takes care of it better now (sounds like something Oda would say in SBS).

If this is the argument then shouldn't we be looking at a Dark Crown for Rayleigh too?:hip

Would Luffy wear a crown ... no. A bangle, a skull, a viking helmet, mask, robot head .... sure. In the literal sense there probably is no treasure to have a crown with. The literal treasure is most likely the truth of the void century, and after learning how the world is and was, I belive Rogers left it all in one piece, undisturbed. Rogers was the king for going the farthest, but kept going until he got sick. Whitebeard probably was closest to a figurative crown if he had tried harder. Rogers was crowned for exploring the farthest, Whitebeard was crowned for having the biggest alliance. They both achieved their goals. Luffy will get both, as I think he will unwittingly have the most flags and support come when he needs it, than anyone in history. That will only happen once he declares war a second time. BB or nobles he is going to rock the world. Crowned a world legend and then at the end probably take off his hat at one piece which is probably a massive grave/shrine to an unspeakable tragedy.
