The MangaHelpers Manga Awards Discussion Thread

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

Now that so many people have voted, I can reach one conclusion: we all have essentially a short-term memory

. Most of us are reading mangas because of Dragon Ball ... and the manga almost didn't get any vote

And even when we check all the votes, there is almost nothing older than 5 years

.

Things like Dragon Ball, Slam Dunk, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Violonist of Hamelin, Inuyasha, Shamo, ... deserved probably better

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

They do, but to be honest I'm glad it's turned out this way. I prefer new manga be advertised rather than the old known ones, although FMA, Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece are mostly nominated. The nominations for Vinland Saga here makes me actually wanna try it out so I shall eventually.

Funny thing is Dragon Ball is basically the basis on which shounen characters and plots tend to go by, it definitely needs a lot of nomination. I could be exaggerating about the basis thing though.

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

oopss last nomination for me

Best Chapter- Sengoku Basara 3- Roar of the Dragon Vol1 Chapter 3
http://fwww.tenmanga.com/chapter/SengokuBasara3RoarofDragonVol01Ch003/212933/

it gives us insight into Mistunari and Ieyasu before they clash and become enemies. it also has 4 very very very sexy double page spreads of mitsunaris carnage (

Moderator Notice:
<- Thanks! Though the page number would have been nice too, making me look through entire chapter for this "beautiful" double spread of pages, lol, J/K. thanks for this, winks. Oh my gosh! haha! I thought you said cleavage... Carnage not cleavage... EPIC oopsy! ROFL!~ HegemonKhan

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

Best Mango Overall: Slam Dunk by Takehiko Inoue

I have a problem with choosing a manga that is still on-going. A manga’s ending is one of the main criteria’s in judging it. Something that is still on-going not only means you cannot judge that, it also means we have no way in knowing if in time it becomes better or worse. So while my favourite Manga is One piece I will not be choosing it because I cannot predict the future so who knows if it will become so rubbish that it doesnt deserve a mention. My choice is Slam Dunk, to me it is one of the few shonens that has a perfect mix of excitement, humour and artistic quality. It has the uncanny ability of keeping anyone one the edge of their seat – whether they enjoy basketball or not. A true masterpiece.

Best New series: Enigma by Sakaki Kenji . It’s the only one that I read past the first chapter.

Best plot twist:

Aizen being the mastermind in the SS arc in Bleach. It blew me away at the time.

Best WTF moment:

Ji..Ji..Ji-Chan! Garps being Luffys grandfather in One Piece.

Best artwork: Vinland Saga by Makoto Yukimura. I sometimes just stop reading and just take a little time to admire the artwork, a really amazing artist writing an amazing manga.

Best full cast: One piece, from a skeleton with an afro to giants the size of battle ships. From a talking reindeer to a singing starfish. Original, unique and totally ingenious cast of characters.

Best pairing: Tokine and Yoshimori from kekkaishi. I am an undercover shipper for them. A guilty pleasure. ^^;

Best Chapter: Chapter 6 of Ikigami. I almost cried...[sizept=1]Who am i kidding, i did cry >.>[/sizept]

Best Double spread : Madara vs Hashirama, Naruto

Best Colour spread: Onepiece Chapter 260

Best fight: Thorrkell vs Thorrfinn, Vinland Saga.

Best costume design: Bleach. They all have really amazing designs (maybe it’s to compensate for the lack of background

)

Best hairstyling (surely it should be “hairstyle” ) : Dragonball, it introduced me to the wonderful spikey gravity defying hairstyles of shonen heroes.

Best Seinen: Going for 20th Century boys. Wow, truly epic in scale. A marvellous piece of work.

Best Shonen: Slam Dunk, see above.

Best Female supporting character: Supporting Oliva Armstrong from FMA.

Best Male supporting character: Hiruma Youichi from Eyeshield 21. Crazy, insane and totally bonkers. But its very hard not to fall in love with the character. He made ES21 for me, without him it would be half a manga.

Best Female lead: Akane Tendo from Ranma 1/2.

Best Male lead: Miyamoto Musashi from Vagabond.

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

~ Im gonna change my Vote for Best Fight FROM ~~Lee v Gaara~~ TO Negi vs Rakan from Mahou Sensei Negima
- Ill edit my original post as well~

Mr. Prince · Dec 30, 2010

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

One small inquiry about a vote for Best Seinen (no idea when it was submitted and I don't want to scroll though this 19 pages baby) that caught my eye:

Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star is NO Seinen. It is Shounen. It was THE headliner for Weekly Shounen JUMP (yes, that Shounen JUMP; home of Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, etc.) in the early 80's. Back then JUMP still featured such manly, gory series but nowadays they tend to cry over the smallest details which could offend someone somewhere for some reason...

Long story short: Hokuto no Ken is no Seinen.

_______________________________________________

While I'm at it I'll be doing last nominations for categories I haven't voted in yet...

Best Hairstyling:
Eyeshield 21
Okay, this is probably the category most uninteresting to me. I can't really remember any series that stood out and I was like "Yeah, that series definitely features characters with great hairdos!". No way in hell. Therefore I'll be going with a series that has a varied cast, therefore varied styles, clothes and haircuts and whatnot.

Best Plot-twist
I'm supporting the Vinland Saga squad here. Great scene and a great finale for a great character. Great.

Best Chapter
Slam Dunk, Volume 31, Chapter 275
Hardest category to vote. I was wrecking my brain over this but I simply can't decide and I can't just reread about every of the hundreds of series I have gotten to know over the last 12 years. So, in the end I'll go with this one. When words need not to be spoken and the whole story is told through the pictures (and still captures you like hell), then it calls for a nomination. Slam Dunk's climax was such a scene, an eternal masterpiece.

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

Though if you do a search at MAL under Manga for Hokuto no Ken with the Seinen option checked... guess what? Yes, it is there~ Maybe it wasnt considered one back then, but it is now~?

~and if you look at the slightly less reliable Wikipedia, it says that the original is Shounen, and the ones after it are Seinen~

Mr. Prince · Dec 30, 2010

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

Hokuto no Ken is the original series. It was featured in JUMP. (It started and ended there) Therefore it is considered a Shounen series. The tankoubon are still sold under the JUMP Comics label that is primarily used for Shounen series from Weekly Shounen JUMP, JUMP SQ and the now-defunct Monthly Shounen JUMP.

So, I couldn't care less about what MAL or Wikipedia say, I'm facing the facts the Japanese market gives me. : )

It is true that some of the spin-off series (various HnK Gaiden by other artists) as well as Souten no Ken were featured in Seinen anthologies but that has nothing to do with the original series.

~Coffee~ · Dec 30, 2010

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

I would rather not turn this already crazy thread into a discussion about the line between Shounen/Seinen, XD -

Riku · Dec 31, 2010

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

I haven't voted on best chapter yet if I recall, so I support Slam Dunk, Volume 31, Chapter 275. Great finale, and I didn't support Slam Dunk in any other categories despite how terrific of a classic it is.

Also, Hokuto no Ken is definetly shonen. Published during it's whole run in Shonen Jump. Spin-offs are different thing. Content wise it could be viewed as border-line seinen, but so could for example Death Note.

It's a shame really. It really deserves a nomination, but there is no chance since it's submitted in the wrong category.

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

Because it would be a shame for a pairing as great as Risa x Otani from Lovely Complex to be left out of the awards, I’m going to change my nomination for best couple/pairing. I originally nominated Tsukasa x Makino from Hana Yori Dango (a pairing that I love!!), now I’m changing my nomination to Risa x Otani from Lovely Complex.

The nomination process is officially closed. I will post the list of nominees, placing especial focus on the ones who received the most “votes/nominations”, shortly. I would like to thank all the members and mods who participated in this project, thank you so very much for your contribution to the MH Manga Awards.

The list of nominees has been updated. While searching through the list you will be able to notice I’ve bolded the nominees that got the most votes/nominations. If you notice any errors or mistakes, or if something is missing please let me know.

As you will see, there are some ties within some award categories. Since only the 5 nominations that earn the most votes become the official nominees, I will explain the way in which we’ll break the ties soon.

I nominate Koroshiya Ichi chapter 25 pg 18 - 19 – 20

This is the most fucked-up, violent, amoral, crazy, disturbing manga I have ever read. I'm talking about a manga where rapes, killing, tortures, bullets in ass, sadomasochism, eating sperm, puking while pooping, EVERYTHING ... can happen. If there is a limit in this manga, I didn't see it. This manga is Koroshiya Ichi.

Itachi turning out to be good. I'll go in depth for this later once i am on a pc...but for now all i'll say is that judging the unexpectedness, yet the finest seamless fitting of it with loads and loads of previously known details, the impact it had on the plot both before and after the revelation, the impact on the characterization and character interaction of the main characters (which is the core crisis of this manga), the way the whole thing changed complexion only by the establishment of a different perspective without changing the actual event(that is itachi being the one to mass murder uchiha), the emotional impact it had on readers and the political/philosophical debate it generated among them (so realistic that it remains an almost unsolvable debate)...that without any doubt it is The Best. A twist that is not only surprising, but with exceptional depth (the only other one that comes to my mind is the Lelouch twist...but its anime).

Thank you, naruto-niikun! :hug

now as I think most of the nomination-time is over, here are the last nominated mangas, which weren't mentioned so far:

Thank you, thank you so very much for your hard work and for the links!! :wtf

Btw, I posted the rest of the links you provided us with in the OP.

Yes I do see them now. Maybe it was my mistake, I'm very sorry Nothing to be worried about, but thanks for your kind words

Glad to hear everything is all right. ^_^

So the final rounds will start in a few days days now?

Yes. The voting process will start soon.

Regarding Hokuto no Ken being nominated in the Seinen category when the original series was a shounen; I’m going to leave the series in the Seinen category until the person who nominated this manga as best Seinen explains to us whether he meant the original series or the spin-off works. If he meant the original series I’ll remove HnK from the Seinen category and I’ll allow him to nominate another series instead; but if he meant the spin-off works then I’ll just leave Hnk in the Seinen category.

The individual threads for each award category have been updated as well.

Since only the 5 nominations that earn the most votes become the official nominees, I will explain the way in which we’ll break the ties soon.

i got it right for the category that I'm responsible for, so (at least for me) no worries nor sorry needed, but thanks anyways for saying sorry, lol.

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

This is mostly a fun thread, and most random discussion is quite welcome as long as it is relevant to the nominated manga. Please restrict your posts to discussions about the manga that have been nominated and the awards in general. No spam and no off-topic discussion please such posts will be dealt with accordingly.

Also, Happy New Year

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

About the nominations, i was kinda hoping that the veteran readers will come forward with some old mangas. Then i could've checked them out. I tried Yu Yu hakusha, db and slam dunk a bit before...didn't really like them. I was a dbz fan when i was a kid, but when i tried to read the manga after all these years i just could not bring myself to like it. Slam dunk had that strange sort of artwork mangas had back then, and seeing that is was a sports manga...i didn't continue. The premise of Yu Yu didn't attract me much. May be i should've continued a bit more with slam dunk and yu yu...but i was hoping someone here would vote for some old gem that i'd just fall in love with instantly.

zelllogan · Jan 1, 2011

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

IMO, old mangas are not as good as current mangas. The overall quality seems higher and the diversity bigger. Of course I may be wrong because old mangas didn't go out of japan & internet wasn't there ... But I still believe that for most good old mangas , there is a manga as good or better now.

Some examples:
City Hunter ---> Angel Hearts
Dragon Ball ---> Naruto
Slam Dunk ---> Real

There are also old extremely good mangas which are still ongoing currently such as Hajime no Ippo or Berserk ...

Among old mangas (finished more than 10 years ago), I think directly to:
- VIOLINIST OF HAMELN
- RANMA 1/2
Those are two mangas that really have their own unique style & for which I don't see a successor.

As you seem to be a dragon ball & naruto fan, I advise you to read "666 satan".It's written by Kishimoto's twin brother.

And if there was a category "most underrated manga", it would be one of my candidates ...

Edit: Scav ... Yeah Yeah I get it ... you don't agree on anything I said ... Nostalgy is one powerful emotion and I already knew what unfair reaction 666 satan can receive. Even Kishimoto (naruto) asked the fans to stop annoying his brother about a "Naruto-ripoff" (which it isn't).
Edit 2: And as I'm no troll ... I don't continue to argue

scav · Jan 1, 2011

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

im not agree with you when u're saying that naruto is better than dragon ball z .

Some old mangas are unique

666 satan, i dropped it at tome 4. its like a "bad copy" of naruto.
angel heart and city hunter are basically the same but i read all city hunter tome while i couldn't read angel heart(i dropped it after fews tome), the same goes for slam dunk and Real
