I recently rewatched A Wolf of Wall Street with a few friends and it basically confirmed, due to the different reactions we had to the movie, what i gathered from the first watch when the movie came out the first time: It is an incredibly smart critic of the excessive lifestyle people have nowadays and the joke is, due to the lack of moral damnation of Belfort´s lifestyle, basically Scorsese "only" depicted it, it´s highly reliant on the viewer´s existing disposition regarding excess. The fact that so many people thought the movie glorified Belfort´s lifestyle pretty much entails that the same people, to some extent one way or the other, glorified the same instant gratification Belfort sought out in the movie. People who actually disliked that way of living would see the movie´s depiction of the lifestyle as vulgar and unappealing.
In that sense, i found a nice channel that actually discusses movies and other stuff, including Wolf of Wall Street, and i think he summarized it pretty well:

Watched a lot of movies recently:
Went to see Sicario in the cinema, great movie that portrays the situation of the drug was as dreadful as it is. Villeneuve is a really smart director who knows when to play the loud and silent notes to create an admirable piece of work. In addition, you have one of the most underrated actors of our time, Del Toro, playing such a scary yet ultimately sympathetic character whose situation and methods you can ultimately understand yet detest at the same time. I bet this movie is gonna get overlooked at the Oscars but yeah...., 9/10.
Saw Black Mass, not bad, Depp shows his best performance in years, though considering his resumé in the last 5 years, that doe snot say much. Good contrast to the movie above though since it is so damn overproduced and directed with constant OST that could be part of a horror movie, weird montages and so forth, 6.5/10.
Watched the Argentinian movie Wild Tales, 6 unrelated short stories that deal with rather stressed people and is one of the funniest things i have seen in a while. 2 out of the 6 or not that good but the other 4, so hilarious, really recommendable, 8.5/10.
Watched Hector and his search for happiness. The movie has a nice premise and also a nice message but the way it deals with the issue at hand is too clichéd, cheesy and immature, best but not solely expressed by his "epiphanies", 6/10.
Watched another movie of Villeneuve, Enemy with Jake Gyllenhaal. Another great movie for people who want to be challenged when watching a movie and use their brains to figure out what is happening + good performance by Gyllenhaal, though it´s no Nightcrawler, 8/10.
Last but not least, watched Why don´t you play in hell? What can i say, Japanese weirdness and Sion Sono at its/his best, 8/10.
