I saw Valerian yesterday and Dunkirk today! Both really good, but in different ways.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets had a very amusing beginning, showing the development of civilization through 'handshakes'. You'll have to see it to understand. :D This movie may get an Academy award for the special effects and set designs... but not for acting skills. I enjoyed it all the way through, but don't expect a good plot.

Dunkirk on the otherhand, is an extremely well made movie about the withdrawal from Dunkirk during WW2. It is shown from numerous different points of view and was carefully woven together to show just how horrific the whole situation was. Some characters in the movie were actually on multiple sinking ships over the course of the movie. To keep this short, the story is this movie's selling point. I have to admit though, the movie made several scene changes that were confusing until you realize you are looking at the same event starting over again, but from someone else's perspective. They do this several times throughout the movie.

Just got around to seeing Spiderman Homecoming and I liked it a lot...with a few reservations.

Positives

- Thought it was the best Spiderman movie. Much closer to the comic book version.
- Tom Holland was great as were most of the rest of the cast.
- Liked Michael Keaton and this version of Vulture. Thought he was a compelling and even likable villain.
- The plot twist was great.
- Some of their drastic character alteration grew on me.

Negatives

- The drastic characters alterations sometimes didn't work out.
Spiderman needs Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy this movie did not have either. Not really. I actually liked the Michelle characters but she's not MJ. She's just not.

Not a huge fan of the forced diversity element either. I mean, if the best actor for the part happens to be black, hispanic or asian or whatever that's fine. But even the personalities changed and at that point your not even working with the same characters anymore. At a certain point your writing characters out of the story not putting a different spin on them.
- The best friend was an annoying and inconsistent character.
- Thought it was significantly longer than it needed to be. It should have been 90 mins not 134.
- The selfie camera stuff at the beginning just plain sucked.

Not a fan of Shia Labeouf, but would watch that for the Bjorn Borg story.

Ehhh, I hope this movie isn't too much of an loud, actiony mess. :notlikethis I know trailers can be misleading and everything, but yeah. The original worked because of it's subtlety. Also, not sure I'm a fan of whatever the hell Jared Leto is doing either...

That trailer didn't seem that action-y to me. Definetly more than the original, but still, like I think 3 action sequences? Not much, as long as they keep them short. I've always liked Leto, even the Joker, but yeah, not sure whats up with his character and if I like it. He has big legacy to fill as the main villain (supposedly). Or I mean, Ruger Hauer is a damn legend as far as portraying bad guys goes. Gives me the chills in any role he does. Though all of the production crew and cast are up to fill some damn huge legacy.

Suprisingly intriqued by the Björn Borg trailer. And I've have kind liked Shia past his Transformers career. He has done some interesting and impressive art projects. Not sure though what what articles to believe about him as an person. Is he just a fiery social activist, or a violent douchebag. Can't tell. But the stuff he has done since outed from mainstream Hollywood has been interesting.

Also, I really liked Homecoming. It was fun teen flick in the vein of old school teen flicks. Had also no issue with "the gang". The classic teenage Parker has been done to death, so I'm actually glad that they changed it up. Does Peter really need to always be that much of loner? Especially in the MCU, he is gonna be a team player anyways. I liked that his best buddy was something not Harry Osborn. Liked how they were awkward geeks in different manner, all of them. I think the geek bully Flash was fine too. The jock-bully is so done, and I found it refreshing that it really clear for the viewer why he is so hostile against Peter: Peter is a lot better than Flash in the same field, and all the influencal people (like teachers and club presidents) like him, and kinda ignore Flash. Is more relatable in my eyes, than the classic, "I don't like your nerd face Parker and I'll bully you the physically weaker invidual to play out my alfa status". Well, sure there is more than that to the classic Flash, but thats how he mostly comes out when he has only a little of screen time. Also makes more sense that they become good friends later, when they come from the same background in science.

I do understand though, that why the new Flash doesn't sit well with all viewers. And Mary Jane. I liked the new MJ, but I get also that.

Though considering the talked about Venom solo film, I don't really see this version of Flash carrying it. Unless something big happens first to develope the character further. A proper backstory and then something like he goes the army and gets PTSD like in the comics. But that doesn't make sense on the timeline. Unless there is a significant time-skip after Infinity War. The hell, the Infinity War itself could be the backdrop for the big changes in Flash.

If they stick to this they're are going to have be a lot of changes to everybody. I'm honestly not sure they will though. I feel like when they try to adapt some of the more major spider man stories these alterations are going to make their lives a LOT more difficult. It would not surprise me at all if they decide to introduce a Gwen or an actual Mary Jane later just to make it easier on themselves.

Though I don't know what they do with Flash Thompson besides replace him with someone else. Part of the Flash Thompson thing was that he's the popular cool guy who is a dick to Peter but well liked by MJ and Gwen. With this setup I don't think you can do that. He's just a jerk to everybody he's not cool at all. Maybe they could sub in Eddie Brock if they tweak the character enough?

And this MJ... she's actually closer to the Ultimate Universe version of Gwen Stacy than she is the actual MJ. So I guess you could swap their story roles maybe. The Liz character was closer to what MJ's supposed to be like.

That all being said though they got Spiderman more right than they ever have before. Tom Holland is perfect. In the movies they always avoid making him as chatty and annoying as he is. He's supposed to like be Deadpool in that he never shuts up no matter how much other heroes want him to. The bad jokes are also great to see.

Although, now that I think about it, maybe they just really want to avoid everything the previous movies covered. If that's the case I feel like the changes make a bit more sense.

God, it would be hilarious if they brought in Cat Woman ripoff extraordinaire Felicia Hardy to be the love interest. That would also allow for Wilson Fisk to be the big bad. And just the comedy of this Spiderman flirting with a much older woman who doesn't know what a kid he is.

Dunkirk 9 / 10

Nolan did something extremely different with a film based on WW2 and he actually made the situation occurring in Dunkirk the main character of the film with the soldiers acting as the supporting characters. How these characters react and perceived the war is executed really well and I don't think, anyone has ever done a war film like this before. It could be that most studios felt the need to have big stars in war films and having them trade lines of dialogue for the sake of gaining attention, possibly catching the attention of the Academy and making audiences feel they need to sit and watch movies like this for more than 2 hours.

The length of time for Dunkirk alone explains it all. Nolan also, approached the film with the war with the intent of making the audience experience what the characters are facing. I think, this is the best Nolan film since "The Prestige" or even "Memento", mainly because Nolan shows his own creativity in filmmaking without interference from the studio.

Definitely recommend this film for anyone who doesn't mind watching films like this, regardless of who is directing them, but for the shear experience of history telling through film. Bravo, to Nolan and his team for "Dunkirk".

p.s., Didn't mean to ride Nolan's d**k, lol, but the movie is really well done and will be seeing it again soon. :super

As for the Emoji Movie
I haven't seen it, but apparently Rottentomatoes has rated it meh!

I can't recall ever seeing a movie with a 'no entry' symbol in the critics consensus before. :XD

lol it is okay to ride Christopher Nolan's D. He's an impressive movie director, producer and writer. :verily

Hmm, I suppose I must watch it now! This is the movie with Harry Styles in it, isn't it? lol oh well though, if the movie is good I must give it a chance!

(I'm curious. What did you think about Saving Private Ryan? The battle on Omaha Beach alone was just so...horrifying (despite a few inaccuracies itself for the battle). The best war film I have ever seen.)

lol. I don't know or am I familiar with Harry Styles, but even if he's in this movie, the war itself takes over the entire film. Tom Hardy was in the film and played one of the air pilots for American and he did a great performance and what he and other actors had to do was literally reenact the situation in Dunkirk. I will say this, Nolan may get his best director Oscar. He may go up against Peele for "Get Out" and Mangold for Logan. I think, Bigelow may get a nod too for upcoming "Detroit".

Harry Styles is some weirdo singer (from Canada?) little girls love. Apparently he wants to act now. :XD

What is Get Out? Never heard of it, though I have heard of Peele.

Technically 'Get Out' is a horror film... a 99% Tomato Meter score horror film.
A quote I've read about it is a better description: "A social commentary film with scares thrown in."

Its really an amazing movie, and you have so many options to see it as it is now out on DVD and on-line.

I just finished rewatching Hancock and I honestly don't see how it is a "shitty movie". It was a little above average, sure, but I liked it regardless.

I also saw War for the Planet of the Apes. I liked it, like I did the rest, but it is the weakest in the series. It just feels like they wanted to hurry along a conclusion to the story and even if Caeser's changes "reverted" at the end, it felt like a betrayal to see them happen to him at all.

8/10

The Dark Tower is currently at 16% at Rotten Tomatoes. To little surprise. That project got me kinda interested when they cast Idris Elba and Matt McConaghuey, but the trailer just eradicated any hope in my mind it would be good. Critics are saying I was right to think so.
Good to see this before I waste money on seeing it. As much as I love those two actors, and I do, I felt the same upon seeing that trailer. It felt....off.

"Detroit" and "The Dark Tower" this weekend. The blend of history and action films this summer has been interesting, so far.

The Dark Tower 8 / 10

So far, I got to see "The Dark Tower" and I thought it was really good and reminded me of an 80's movie. Idris Elba did a great performance as the Gunslinger who shoots demons with special gun. The kid, Jake was interesting and I like how they threw easter eggs threw out the film with King's previous adaptations. I did hear rumor of a tv series to follow this film and can't wait to see how that plays out.

p.s., The Mist tv series is really bad, just as bad as Under the Dome. However, I got to see a trailer for "Mr. Mercedes" from a network owned by AT&T and the trailer looks to follow the source material very closely. And there's "IT" coming up next month. :zomg

Anyone seen that Netflix Death Note film yet?

I did.

I don't want to waste time writing about the damn thing. But this review is pretty much spot-on.

yeah, I watched the Netflix "Death Note" movie and I was appalled. They really made both Light and L completely moronic compared to the manga and anime adaptation. At least the Japanese films tried to be somewhat creative with the source material versus this new film that completely took the idea and sh*t on it.

Has there ever been a good live action anime adaptation? Like, seriously, has there ever been even one? Because I don't think there has.

When are production companies going to realize that video game and anime live action movie adaptations are a bad idea. And when the proposal to make another one lands on their desk they need a little Nancy Reagan poster on thier wall to tell them what to do...
