Avatar is just FernGully with excellent graphics. Nothing with such an unoriginal plot deserves to win Best Picture.

Best picture is not solely based on the story. It's basically an award given to the picture that overall is the best. Avatar's production was thousand fold more complicated than pictures like The Hurt Locker. It's not even funny how much more Avatar deserves an Oscar than Hurt Locker, which basically was made in a year if I'd guess. There's an ASSLOAD of work behind Avatar, and despite the story being rather "normal and cliche" it's a very complete picture. Everything about it is great (perhaps except the cliche story).

Again, it's nominated, so obviously it deserves to win even if another film might deserve it more in the Oscar comitee's minds.

By that logic, my marching band should have gone to State every year. We worked harder, longer, than other marching bands in the State, but we never got too far. Our shows were just as clean as the others, we had just as good as musicians, we chose just as hard, if not harder, music, and our visuals were just as good. We were just as complete as everyone else, but we were overshadowed.

You might work hard at something, but that doesn't mean you always come out on top.

Why is it nominated? Because, there are now ten slots and the Oscars generally cater to certain demographics. In regards to the demographics, you rarely see certain genres, despite incredibly strong films, receive nominations and massive blockbuster successes typically overrun the categories. In regards to the the slots, if there were still only five slots on the list, as I think there should be (since it has been expanded to ten and may even go beyond, just about any great film from a given year has a valid case for being on it. For example, where is 500 Days of Summer or Zombieland), I highly doubt that Avatar would be on the Best Picture list. However, that doesn't mean I think it should be excluded from other categories. Clearly, it deserves to be in, and will probably win, the Visual Effects, Director, and Film Editing categories. However, overall, the film isn't strong enough to win Best Picture. You see something similar with Up. It's in both Best Picture and Best Animated Feature. However, it's only going to win one of those because its strength lies in one category and not the other. That is why those categories exist. They recognize the specific strengths that contributed to the success of certain films that have large weaknesses in other areas.

Despite however much effort or ingenuity, for its time, went into Avatar, it simply isn't a film that will stand the test of time. As visual effects continue to improve over the next 5-10 years, you probably won't continue to espouse the wondrousness of Avatar. It is an incredible feat for its time, but it is no sci-fi masterpiece like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Solaris, etc.

IMO it was a good movie, but not that great. Is kind of like Pocahontas meets the Matrix.



Has anyone watched the documentary ''Objectified''? It's about Industrial design, It's pretty good, specially if you are into fields that have to do anything with design, such as Engineering and architecture; and also if you ever wonder how some things are build.

Objectified is a feature-length independent documentary about industrial design. Its a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. Its about the people who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. Its about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability. Its about our relationship to mass-produced objects and, by extension, the people who design them.

Cool! I've watched a couple of trailers and it seems to be a good movie, so I'll defintely check it out very soon!

Oh yea, lol I finally watched Avatar! It's a good movie. The animation, graphics and sound effects are amazing throughout the movie! I thought the story was solid. Some very touching scenes as well. I still think the movie is extremely over-rated and it was hyped in the same manner as 2012......and that was 100% bs.

Overall, yes Avatar is worth paying ** for to watch in the movies......makesure you watch it in 3D!!!!

HAHA! i am actually proud to say that of the 50 worst, I have only seen a handful of them. But I gotta say, I liked Howard the Duck...when i was like 10. I don't think I'll be watching it ever again though.

And Spiderman 3 should be higher on the list. Which is funny because Spiderman 2 is probably on my shortlist of best films ever. Curious how they could be so far apart. Raimi shouldn't have douched one of my favorite villains ever. And WTF was the Sandman doing in that movie in the first place? Talk about a useless addition!! Cut him out and give Venom the respect he deserves you weenies!! /bitter

But it's not fault of Raimi - he wanted to made the movie solely with Sandman and Green Goblin jr. aka New Goblin <lol>, without Venom; it was strictly the decision of Sony that Raimi was somewhat forced to do the movie with Venom too ^^" The fault is on the side of Sony <but I also don't like the attitude of Raimi :x How could he told everyone that he doesn't want Venom or any other symbiote in the Spidey movies because he doesn't like them :x> It's because of Sony that Raimi isn't doing the Spidey 4 movie and there's a re-boot of the series. I don't know what to think about it - from one hand I wanted different director to Spidey movies, but I didn't wanted a re-boot of the "new" series right now. But I can change my mind later on

btw. but I like that Sony would like to do Venom spin-off movie - that's quite cool idea and if done right, fans of Venom - rejoice madafaka! xDXD

Ah I see, thanks. I didn't know that Raimi didn't want Venom in the movie. But he still didn't have to make him suck ass. I mean, I love Raimi's movies in general, so when I watched Spiderman 3, after having such high expectations after part 2, I was just disgusted and wanted to wipe my ass with the original film reel. And I'm not sure about the revamping of Spiderman now. Plus I heard they wanted to make a movie about Carnage as a good guy...

Just saw Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief; I only have five words to to describe it: I WANT MY MONEY BACK!

It felt like I was watching the bastard child of the Harry Potter franchise and the X-Men franchise, but all wrong and with tons of plot holes.
