I think in the early series, the seem to come from the same character base, they're both the bad-ass, laid-back dudes, the contrast to Luffy's hyperness. It wasn't until they came a bit into the Grand Line they started to separete, Zoro being the training freak who's only wish is to get strong enough, and Sanji turning into the knight in shining armor.
