So, True Detective is finally back. A pretty good opening episode, let's you know how the three main characters will tie into one another. My only concern is that I'm not sure there's a clear narrative foil among the three like we had with Rust and Marty. Everything is pretty fucking dour and all three main characters are all pretty damaged in similar ways. Maybe I'm assuming a lot there, but I'm not sure if the same sort of intriguing rapport will exist between this cast.

And maybe I'm being a bit severe when I call it a concern, as I couldn't think of a lighter way to describe it.
I like the dynamic between Farrell´s and Vaughn´s character so far but beyond that, yeah, no real connection yet between the police main characters at least but it was just the first episode, so we will see.
Damaged in similar ways though? I feel like the wounds they carry are different, both by source (deal with rape of wife and the kid (btw, i am not confident that i could do that if my gf got raped and bore the child) and the way they express in their behavior and personality.

True Detective Season 2 Episode 1-- I feel it's a bit of a bumpy start-- in that, 1) felt a little film noir but all over the place 2) the introduction felt incomplete and random as oppose to season 1 where the seed of the story was quite straightforward..

Hopefully, things start connecting, otherwise I think it will be very hard for Season 2 cast to even compare to Woody Harrelsen and Matthew McConaughey.

Okay, maybe not damaged in similar ways, but their attitudes are rather similar. There isn't a big difference between them like with what we had with Rust and Marty. Not really a necessity or anything, but yeah still early.

I actually didn't realize that that was what was going on with the kid. I assumed he took after his mother, since he doesn't resemble Farrell at all (being a ginger and everything), we don't see her, and there wasn't really much of a resemblance in the photo we did see of the guy that attacked her either.

Also, I'm somewhat surprised to read some negative reviews of the first episode on some sites. I still liked it, even though there was a lot to take in as an introductory episode. Probably a product of having a much larger principal cast. I hope them choosing to go with 4 instead of 2 doesn't end up being something they'll regret.

It could be that they got the wrong guy but it was apparent to me that the kid is not Colin´s son, it was even stated in the dialogue with the lawyer iirc.

I think most that have seen season 1 either thought that it was really great or that it was pretentious, both are not really good mindsets before watching it, i think that partly explains the bad reviews. I can´t judge anything since beyond introducing the characters, nothing really much happened.

Ah, I must have missed that part.

I don't understand how people could have disliked it. I understand the people who thought the finale was disappointing due to a variety of things, but I'm someone who came to appreciate the LOST finale...so maybe I'm not the best person to opine.

The deliverance of character exposition, especially regarding Rust, was, well, too uncreative since they just had the character go on this minutes-long ramblings. Personally, it did not bother me much since McConaughey did a great job but it comes with the danger of coming off a bit pretentious and if somebody is not used to critical thinking and is confronted with those ramblings, he/she will probably dislike it.

I liked the LOST finale as well btw, it was an improvised thing imo but i think they did well.

I think anyone who watched the first few episodes of the series was probably taken aback by Rust and his monologues at first. I get why some would describe it as a pretentious, but the performance was so strong that it didn't bother me. There were several things in this first episode that I couldn't really ignore, but it's so early that I feel like we don't have enough of a handle of the characters to pass judgment. Like, maybe Colin's character really IS that much of a nutjob, etc.

Oh really? Kind of surprised to hear that. I loved it myself, but it was pretty controversial.

That´s exactly it and i agree, some things were not to my liking in the first episode as well (meaning season 2) but it was just a first episode which even was divided between 4 main characters. How people can write a review based on that is beyond me and i read a few, it´s mostly nitpicking at this point (for example how McAddams´ character was initially introduced and characterized by her sexual preferences, which we do not even get to know iirc).

I think people really disliked the ending of LOST because it did not answer many questions regarding the mysteries introduced throughout the seasons but well, the most interesting part of the show for me were the characters, their dynamic and their journey and in that aspect, i think the ending did well.

That scene kind of seemed bizarre to me, but I didn't view it as being sexist. There was no nudity, nor anything suggestive. The Internet is out of hand.

The things I read were about the brass knuckles scene and how preposterous it was that someone would do that and not be arrested the next day. They'd have to see him around his kid's school. It wasn't dealt with in the first episode, so who can really say. The other scene I saw some laugh at was the motorcycle scene with Kitsch....which I found to pretty captivating since I wasn't expecting something as crazy and suicidal as turning his headlight off while going 100+ mph...just holy shit lol

Well, glad to read it. I sort of see a similarity between the "disappointment" with this show's first season and LOSTs. The difference being that there was much more invested into LOST because it had multiple seasons and many more hours of the show. But True Detective got into this really weird place where I think some people were expecting some sort of supernatural explanation to the case, which is just silly. With LOST, people were expecting everything to be explained, down right to even the most random, single-frame references from seasons past. I didn't think that sort of gripe was fair, since those little things couldn't have been the only reason people stuck with the show.

Especially considering that the bike cop was basically introduced with his impotence problem which seems worse to me.

I have to admit that Fukunaga´s absence could be felt in the first episode, i feel like the guy understood the script of the first season perfectly and was able to translate it while the new director tried to copy the style in the second season which does not work completely but people are really unfair to be honest. Last year, nobody knew anything about True Detective except that McConaughey and Harrelson were leading (which was not the most promising thing either btw) and the first episode blew almost everyone away. Now everyone expects so much with almost zero patience that season 2 has no chance to be regarded as good and successful. I read for example that despite all the main characters are so damaged and lost, you do not feel and empathize with them. Anyone who expects that to be the case after the first episode in which you spend maybe 15 minutes with each characters is delusional anyway. The reason why the first episode of the first season was that acclaimed was the atmosphere, the bizarre case they were dealing with, Rust´s ramblings and well, i think the interviews in the future created an interesting dynamic with the story when the case was investigated but it was not because the audience was instantly drawn to the characters, though i can´t deny that i felt sympathetic towards Rust pretty early because i partly agreed with his ramblings :hip. Season 2 first episode might be worse but that does not make it bad per se.

You know, everyone takes away something different from a piece of medium since people´s focus is mostly predetermined by their preferences and experiences but i sometimes can´t fathom how people miss the point of movies, shows or books. The mysteries in both True Detective (the case) and LOST were undeniably important to the narrative but they were not the central focus, the characters, who were confronted with those happenings, were the main point, and i can´t deny that i felt a little bit disappointed as well that some mysteries in LOST did not get resolved (like the black kid who could conjure stuff to the island) but that alone could not make or break the show for me.

Edit: Btw, watched the two new HBO shows, Ballers and The Brink. Former is basically like Entourage in the world of professional football with juvenile and overpaid athletes/actors screwing, partying and swearing all the time, pretty boring and pointless. The Brink on the other hand was nice, not as satirical as i imagined it to be but Robbins´witty remarks and Jack´s subtle representation of American ignorance i guess. It was not great but good enough to make me watch the following episodes.

Yeah I barely paid attention to the two while I waited for Last Week Tonight to come on. Ballers does indeed seem like a rehash of Entourage, but with athletes instead of actors. The Brink might be a better show, but I can't help thinking it's trying to be like Veep or something.

dark matter got potential. It can become the best sci-fi show since maybe battlestar gallactica. I don't see anything in recent years that has half the potential of this thing in sci-fi. Endearing characters (even if there are stereotypes, the characters are working well together), good premise and a "firefly" feeling for the cherry on the cake. I hope they don't mess this up.

I also watched the other new sci-fi show: killjoys. It's brainless entertainment, action and Hannah John-Kamen is really hot. I fell asleep though. Granted I was tired but it isn't a good sign. I just don't see any interesting at scenario level in this show.

I also saw episode 2 of True detective (which is so far boring but season 1 started slowly too). That ending :D ... Nobody can see that coming.
Seems like George RR Martin had a true influence on how to end episodes in the tv world... Did they just kill Colin Farrell ? I doubt it but it still is one hell of a cliffhanger
. Anyway, I have my doubts on this season, Matthew Mcconaughey is really hard to replace. But I love the generic of season 2 with that weird song.

Edit: I might have been too optimistic on dark matter ...

I hate when people compare everything to Game of Thrones. A commercial on GSN calls "skin wars the game of thrones of reality shows." [paraphrase]

I cannot wait for this to come out. Television may never be the same.

I was so wrong about Dark Matter. I wanted to like it so much. But the characters are so badly written, it's appaling.

And am I the only one really hyped by this ?

Probably. Seems like producers have run out of ideas or something...

Anyone still following True Detective this season? Gotta say, it's gotten better with each episode. Really different from the first season, but I'm really really hyped for the last two episodes. They've got their hooks in me.

Of course... imo season 2 is great so far. I don't understand the negativity in many reviews.
I think it's mainly because season 1 could still surprise and now people started watching season 2 in expectation of a flawles TV-milestone or something like that.

Has anyone tried out Mr. Robot yet? I'm 4 Eps in and this looks very very promising.

Yeah, I saw a lot of negative reviews for the season opener, expecting more of the same thing. I think the only complaint really is that there are too many characters to focus on in 8 episodes. While I think his performance is good, I find myself not really caring all that much about Taylor Kitsch's character. It just seems like 4 main characters is too much to give full exposition to when you only have 8 episodes.

I'm really digging True Detective; I have to say that I'm not as hooked as I was in the first season, where it got me from the first episode but as Gary you've said it's been a steady improvement and that last episode was so tense.

Think I'll watch Mr. Robot today, a friend of mine is following and they've said good things about it.
