Probably. Seems like producers have run out of ideas or something...

Anyone still following True Detective this season? Gotta say, it's gotten better with each episode. Really different from the first season, but I'm really really hyped for the last two episodes. They've got their hooks in me.
Yep, still following, not as invested as first season, hope Ray gets a reason to live though.

Of course... imo season 2 is great so far. I don't understand the negativity in many reviews.
I think it's mainly because season 1 could still surprise and now people started watching season 2 in expectation of a flawles TV-milestone or something like that.

Has anyone tried out Mr. Robot yet? I'm 4 Eps in and this looks very very promising.

Been watching since the pilot came out, great first few episodes, i am not digging the development in the last two though

Yeah, I saw a lot of negative reviews for the season opener, expecting more of the same thing. I think the only complaint really is that there are too many characters to focus on in 8 episodes. While I think his performance is good, I find myself not really caring all that much about Taylor Kitsch's character. It just seems like 4 main characters is too much to give full exposition to when you only have 8 episodes.
I think he is the one who is unnecessary among the cast, both character-wise and actor-wise. I can not take Taylor Kitsch seriously, especially teh scene in which he screamed at his mother, was unintentionally funny to me.

Idk, I feel like his performance has been good...we just know the least about him compared to the other 3. Somehow it feels like it's too late in the season to really give him much more exposition, so at this point he does feel unnecessary, yeah...

Kitsch? I disagree as far as True Detective goes...the problem is he doesn't have as much exposition as the others and feels rather tacked on.

Holy shit episode 7 :kreygasm

God that was an amazing episode. I might have been skeptical after the first episode, but I'm glad I stuck with it. The 90 minute finale looks like it's shaping up to be what most people hoped for from the first season.

Also, I'll say that Taylor Kitsch's inclusion as a character makes a lot more sense now, but I'll explain that later if anyone is interested.

I am hereby declaring my interest! :D
Are you refering to his "Black Mountain"-past and their connection to Catalyst?

The way Burris was standing behind that door was a little too predictable, but I'll let that slide because every scene with James Frain is a good scene! :D

That was a great warm-up for the finale. Vince Vaughn got a lot of negative feedback after the first episodes, but this time he really nailed it imo. I'm totally hyped for next week!

Well, that felt a bit shoehorned in, but I mean the scene itself. If you can justify creating a character just for a particular scene....because it seemed like something you would expect out of a Black Ops mercenary-type. It was really well done, except the ending being a bit cheap. I totally called him not making it out of there, but Holloway emphasizing how huge of a network the tunnels were and then Burris just happens to be outside the entrance Woodrough leaves....:XD But I thought there was something poetic about someone fighting his way out of a 1v6, the relief he felt, for that all being ripped away. I also didn't quite get his friend's point about none of this happening if he just stopped trying to pretend to be someone else. I wasn't sure if that was just a gay thing, because it made no sense...what would his sexuality have to do with him, Ray, and Ani getting over their heads? They would have just found another way to lure him out.

And honestly, I really thought Burris might have been one of the "good guys". The idea that he was investigating the situation solo for years vibed with the idea that the Birdman that shot Velcoro used nonlethal ammo...he was an officer from his own department and didn't want him dead. There was a theory that the dream sequence he had with his father was just a hallucination and the convo was really between him and Burris.

---------- Post added at 04:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:00 PM ----------

Honestly, I've never had a problem with Vaughn's performance. I don't get most of the criticisms...how is it his fault that you've never seen him act in a "serious" role? It's the same with people whose main criticism of this season is that it's been too hard to follow. Everything is there. I mean, maybe there have been some pacing issues with a couple episodes, and too many "info dump" scenes, but it isn't like the overarching plot makes no sense or something. Either you buy in and put in some effort to pay more attention, or go watch some other crime drama that wraps everything up in a tiny, neat bow every week. I really don't get it.

True Detective season 2: It's like blue balls, in your heart.
:lmao

I have mixed feelings about the finale, just like the first season...I wonder if that's a coincidence or not. But I'll probably rewatch it to get better thoughts of it.

Just short summary of the season , especially in comparison to season 1:

Double the main characters compared to season 1, hence approx. half the time to flesh them out and develop them. Acting was good (though i still do not buy Kitsch, for me a miscast) but not as mesmerizing as McConaughey or even Harrelson. The mystery was not as compelling either, maybe because the mysticism was missing but then again, the resolution of that was disappointing as well in the first season.
All in all, not as bad as some people make it out to be but still somewhat of a let-down after the amazing first series. Of course it´s unfair to a certain extent to compare it, it´s a stand-alone story after all but hey, it´s the same writer, so you could expect something that could at least come close to it.

It wasn't really the same sub-genre. Season 1 was a Southern Gothic story, while Season 2 is pure Noir. Definitely have some similarities, but there are some obvious differences. I think people had their asses tickled too much with a feather as far as the cultish and ritualistic stuff goes, so they came to expect such a thing. I'd draw a lot of comparisons to this season and the film, Chinatown. Not as outlandish and weird, but just as hardboiled. I think people are let down by the ending because they probably dislike open-ended endings anyway. Not saying I was fully satisfied either, but I'm not sure this season was set up for a fully gratifying conclusion.

Not sure on the character thing. I'll agree that Kitsch felt tacked on, but his later scenes sort of justified the character for me...and it drew parallels with Ray and Frank's characters as well.

The people who survived were the ones who were able to fully let go and accept their past. Only Ani seemed like she was able to do this. As Paul died for not accepting who he was, Ray for not letting go of the mistakes he made, and Frank being too proud and greedy.

The ending is open-ending, and what you think comes of that probably says a lot about the kind of person you are. You're either Len Osterman, who thinks those type of people will never get punished, and someone will do something to the Times reporter, like what Ray did to him in the first episode. Or you're like Ani, and really think that they'll be eventually taken down and brought to justice for what they've done. I'd like to think I'm optimistic and say that something will come of Ani and the reporter's meeting...but I can understand why people may have felt that this was a copout of some sort, maybe.

But honestly, I feel like I knew more about the 4 main characters than I really expected to. Maybe that came at the expense of the actual case, but I'm not sure. We saw much more of Rust and Marty's personal lives in the first season, but in some ways, I felt myself more attached to the characters in season 2 and it felt like they had just as much exposition as the duo did in season 1...somehow

I keep going back to this quote from the Vanity Fair interview Pizzolato did regarding the second season

"a detective story in the manner of Oedipus Rex, in which 'the detective is searching and searching and searching, but the culprit is him.'"

I think it's probably as simple as characters who don't seem to realize the part they played in their own fates. Ray said it in the beginning of the season - "We get the world we deserve". That's definitely the truest when it comes to Frank...but maybe a bit more hard to stomach when it comes to Ray and Paul.

I still don't get the criticism as to why it was shit....can you be more specific?

For me it was the total opposite really. While i do think that it was more time spent to develop Rust and Marty, i think it also has something to do with empathizing with the characters just for who they are. Many things Rust said during his ramblings hit close to home for me, though i am certainly not as pessimistic as him nor did i have a tragic life as him, at least not to that extent, but i could get right into him while Marty really resembled my father a lot.

And regarding your quote, i can totally see that. There was some Heaven-Hell symbolism going on in the series but the characters put themselves in hell in the first place and had, at any time, the power to get out of it but remained there, not being able to shake old experiences, this is mostly expressed in the last episode both literally and figuratively regarding the character´s inner world. Frank could have left with his wife but remained there, Ray could have left but he had to visit his son one last time which ultimately led to his downfall and so on.

Maybe saying more attached its a stretch...but I was actually surprised how invested I got into them, given how the season started out. The first season was more of a whack upon the head that opened your eyes into a personality you didn't see anywhere else on TV, saying things you don't hear anywhere else either...That was Rust. That definitely resonated with me, but there was something about how damaged these people were, and the little sparkle you saw from them. Ray obviously got the world that he deserved, but how did he earn it? It wasn't necessarily his fault. I found myself really sympathetic to him after the shootout. The scene in episode 7 with Ani when he asks her if "she misses it"...and when she asked "what?"...and then he says "...anything". That just about sums up Ray as a character. How much of a shell of a person he was. I have to admit that sometimes I've been in that same headspace, and it's the perfect way to express that sense of emptiness and despair. But even still, he still had the motivation to do the right thing and try to get out from under it.

And then there's Frank's sense of honor. The scene he had with Stan's son was so fucking heartbreaking and really rung true for me. And the sad part about it is, this is shit he had to find out on his own. He wasn't mimicking his father there...his father was nothing to him. It makes the fact that he was incapable of having a son of his own even sadder. Despite being a gangster, he was definitely the "hero" of the story in many ways.

I gotta admit that I was pretty loaded when I watched the finale, but I had very little to complain.
It's funny that most of the things that this season is criticised for can also be found in season1. I really don't get the negativity.
I'm gonna give the season a binge-rewatch in a few weeks.

Just saw it...
When I started watching this show, it reminded me a little bit of fight club... but I certainly did not expect THIS.
Although, looking back, there were several hints throughout the season.

Just caught up and I absolutely loved this season, it started slow but it was so good by the end.I was looking forward to the addition of Francis Dolarhyde, aka the Red Dragon. And Richard Armitage delivered such a good performance.:wtf
I thought Ralph Fiennes was pretty good as the Tooth fairy, so it was hard to imagine someone do better than him. But Richard did just that imo, he showed how vulnerable his character was,and his struggle against the dragon. It's just perfect and I feel he didn't disappoint.
I absolutely love this show....but they fucking cancelled it! WHY OH GOD WHY? That's one of the few shows that I actually watch, and I feel it's pretty much a piece of art. The way it's filmed, the imagery, the music...it's pretty artistic.
I guess something about serial killers is bound to be not popular, that's why it got cancelled I presume. But still it was a pretty good show.
Yeah pretty bummed about that, but I felt the creators really delivered on this season, and the ending was perfect too. Would have liked if there was an additional season they would switch to Clarice and cover the story of Silence of the lambs, which is only logical given the point they reached in this season.
Anyway awesome show that I totally recommand, if you're willing to overlook the gory aspects of it.
