A theory brought to you by Kato75, the drunk brazillian.
Fair warning, to read this, I am assuming you are up to date with TG RE chapters, namely 110. So, yeah, spoiler warnings.
It will also use the Tarot Motif as the title implies, so I will copy the same warning made by @Darjaille in this thread:
If you believe the theory and don't want to know any possible future scenarios (it doesn't spoil plot obviously but could help you predict accurately positivity/negativity of what's coming next) DON'T read the continuation of the journey (second link) and avoid this thread (but do read the first link, it's really interesting!!)
ANOTHER WARNIG: THIS "THEORY" IS BASED ON HEAAAAAAAAVY SPECULATION BY MY PART, WITH FEW CONCRETE THINGS TO BE BASED UPON. SO, yeah, I KNOW ITS NOT THE MOST SOLID THING OUT THERE.
This theory may also tie in a lot of other theories, and if you guys want to, feel free to do those conections on the comments. I will not point them in the main thread so as not make it confusing.
So, by this point, most of us have either read or at least heard about the heavy themes of Tarot in Tokyo Ghoul, and it´s relationship with the MC, Kaneki. But what if I told you that he is not the only Fool in a Journey?
Even better, what if I told you that this fool is Ghoulkind Itself?
Basically, what if Tokyo Ghoul, from its in-universe past going all the way to the current time and ending of the series was a Journey? Please, read the ALL CAPS Bold warning again before starting reading.
0. The Fool
While so far we don´t for sure where ghouls originated from, I find it safe to say that the first ghouls did not define themselfes as such, and were probally "fools" in the sense of naivete, not knowing that them looking like humans and eating humans was a big "sin". The first aparences of ghouls are confirmed to be at the earlist in Feudal Japan, so them being seem as a whole diferent class of beings (supersticion and stuff) are a probable scenario
1.Magician
“ He is also our conscious awareness. The Magician is the force that allows us to impact the world through a concentration of individual will and power.”
This is probally the OG Ghouls discovering that their gifts could be used for the good of humanity, since having better streght would help with things like construction and defense, since this (feudal japan) was a combat heavy period, plenty of antagonist people to eat, so yeah. Having a super powerfull person who can eat your enemies at your side is probally a good advantage
2. The High Priestess
"...is the negative side. She is the mysterious unconscious. She provides the fertile ground in which creative events occur."
Taking in the Fools descrpition, it could probally mean that early ghouls were not as Strong as current time ghouls. The high priestsss means them discovering that eating a lot = power.
This composes the balance between “Good Relations” and “Power” present in the 1 and 2 cards
3.Mother
"It is natural to delight in the abundant goodness of Mother Earth who surrounds us with her support."
means that the ghouls probally started over eating, or at least getting very powerfull (for the standards at the time), probally losing control and freely predating on enemies and friends alike. Maybe even other ghouls.
4.Father
"The Fool also encounters rules. He learns that his will is not always paramount and there are certain behaviors necessary for his well-being. There are people in authority who will enforce such guidelines. These restrictions can be frustrating, but, through the patient direction of the Father, the Fool begins to understand their purpose."
Is probally when the humans first started taking active action against the ghouls as a race. It could also mean the discovery of the first Kakujas insanity, since going back to the past being a war period (and even if we go even further than feudal japan, that still apllies).
5.Hierophant
"The child is trained in all the practices of his society and becomes part of a particular culture and worldview. He learns to identify with a group and discovers a sense of belonging. He enjoys learning the customs of his society and showing how well he can conform to them."
is the beggining of the ghouls isolating themselfes from society, finally indentifing themselfes as a race because of the prosecution of regular humans.
6.The lovers
In this setting is obvious, the mating between human and ghoul, and probally the origin of the legends surronding One Eyed Ghouls
7.The chariot
"Through discipline and will-power, he has developed an inner control which allows him to triumph over his environment."
Ghouls integrating themselfes somehow back into society. This could aply to both early ghouls like arata and and/or the Washu Clan. Considering the 8 card, this may even mean that either or both groups were trying for cooperation and coexistance.
8.Strength
"Over time, life presents the Fool with new challenges, some that cause suffering and disillusionment. He has many occasions to draw on the quality of Strength (8). He is pressed to develop his courage and resolve and find the heart to keep going despite setbacks. The Fool also discovers the quiet attributes of patience and tolerance. He realizes the willful command of the Chariot must be tempered by kindliness and the softer power of a loving approach"
Probally shows the ghouls being distraught with human nature, and the washus with ghoul´s savagery (corresponding to the kindness part)
9. Hermit
"Sooner or later, the Fool is led to ask himself the age-old question "Why?""
Still, the Fool(s, in this case), realize that the world as it is is wrong . For the Ghouls is that humanity is really not Worth the effort, for the washus the reverse, at least in some degree
10.Wheel and 11.Justice.
"After much soul-searching, the Fool begins to see how everything connects. He has a vision of the world's wondrous design; its intricate patterns and cycles. His perspective is wider, and he sees himself within the grander scheme of a universal plan. His sense of purpose is restored."
"The Fool must now decide what this vision means to him personally. He looks back over his life to trace the cause and effect relationships that have brought him to this point. He takes responsibility''
The Washus discover that their place is Ghoul Hunting, or as later stated, at least trying to act as mediators for the races. For the others ghouls, as always, it is the oposite. With such organized oposition against them, they must stand against it, away from human society
However, considering the following cards, I would say that the ground wasn´t draw so clear as it is in the current time, and that the Washus probally tried to work together with the ghouls, trying reason first before violence.
12. Hanged Man and 13. Death
"He is determined to realize his vision, but he finds life is not so easily tamed. Sooner or later, he encounters his personal cross - an experience that seems too difficult to endure"
"The Fool now begins to eliminate old habits and tired approach"
Something happens (probally a saved ghoul screws up) and them they decide to turn full humans
14.Temperance
"Since embracing the Hermit, the Fool has swung wildly back and forth on an emotional pendulum. Now, he realizes the balancing stability of temperance (14). He discovers true poise and equilibrium. By experiencing the extremes, he has come to appreciate moderation. The Fool has combined all aspects of himself into a centered whole that glows with health and well-being. How graceful and soft is the angel on Card 14 compared to the powerful but rigid ruler in the Chariot (Card 7)? The Fool has come a long way in realizing the harmonious life. "
This is clearly where TG started
I believe 15. The Devil is where we current are in the story.
"The Fool has his health, peace of mind and a graceful composure. What more could he need? On everyday terms, not much, but the Fool is courageous and continues to pursue the deepest levels of his being. He soon comes face to face with the Devil (15). The Devil is not an evil, sinister figure residing outside of us. He is the knot of ignorance and hopelessness lodged within each of us at some level. The seductive attractions of the material bind us so compellingly that we often do not even realize our slavery to them. We live in a limited range of experience, unaware of the glorious world that is our true heritage. The couple on Card 15 are chained, but acquiescent. They could so easily free themselves, but they do not even apprehend their bondage. [Note] They look like the Lovers, but are unaware that their love is circumscribed within a narrow range. The price of this ignorance is an inner core of despair."
The washus were estabilished and so were the Ghouls. We know however that in a outsider perspective, this was not a healthy relationship.
So, who will show them that it is wrong? The devil, who is often represented by what? A (Black) Goat.
Then, I belive the current and next(s) arc(s) will be about The Devil bringing the 16.Tower down.
"Gray, cold and rock-hard, this fortress seems to protect but is really a prison. Sometimes only a monumental crisis can generate enough power to smash the walls of the Tower."
I could tie in the rest of the cards with another popular theory that I am a subscriber of (Ghouls=Humans), but I feel this would overload it.
