This may be how "Kyousen" is considered a pejorative term...

So... I was trying to make a personal translation for a HxH chapter, then I stumbled upon the term 協専. I always thought it was just a combination between 協 for association and 専 for specialty, but then I still decided to do a search, I looked up words ending with 専, and found this:

http://jisho.org/words?jap=*専&eng=&dict=edict

As you can probably notice, most of the words showing up there are about attraction to a specific type of people. So this may be how these hunters' denomination is pejorative if I'm not mistaken, it would be a bit like calling them "association chasers" or even "association prostitutes"...

I don't know whether it was already noticed or not, but there! Are there any japanophiles who can confirm or invalidate this?

It's definitely badly connoted. Here's what Kewl0210 said about it.

The "Temp Hunters" are the desk-job hunters.
That was introduced a waaaaaaaaay long time ago. When they were explaining things like what Blacklist Hunters and Gourmet Hunters and the 1-2-3 star hunters and stuff like that were. That's the translation that was on the wiki and the word 協専 doesn't... translate well to anything. So I just went with the official translation. It means like "Corporation-specialty" or something.

It's supposed to be an insulting name to Hunters who've "lost their pride" and took only corporate jobs. I checked some Japanese reference sites on this, too. But I wanted to use the name people would recognize so they wouldn't think this is a new idea. Because they don't risk themselves or carry the spirit of discovering new things anymore.

I'm not a native English speaker, nor a Japanese speaker or reader, but from what I guess, "Dogs" seems to me the best way to portray them.
Kewl is very helpful and he's doing a really great job, you may pm him for further clarification. :^_^

I think it would be fair to use "sold out hunters".
Yeah that's pretty much what's usually understood by the term, but what I mean is more the underlying connotation as Erinyes said -I misexpressed myself when I said "it would be like saying"-, in the sense of "think about it!"... I have a hard time believing it's pure coincidence that most of the terms I mentionned cover fetishism/prostitution... and remember, Togashi is probably not the kind to consider himself above that! :3c

I'll see with Kewl, I hope he's not too busy atm

Sorry for the double post =b
EDIT: Lol automatic double-post fusion, nice idea haha!

So here's how it went:

Well, it can mean that but it can also mean a lot of other things. It's not a sexual connotation that they're using here. There are tons of words that have a tertiary sexual connotation but that's not what they're primarily used for.
So there, I was almost sure there was somehing to it, bah! It's not everyday that HxH gets discussed from a linguistic angle, so at least there's that, right?
right?

I recall reading somewhere that back in the day in Japan being a salesman, merchant or that sort of thing was not very well respected because you had to bow down to others (or something of the sort). Perhaps this is something similar to that? It kinda fits into the whole loosing their pride thing.
